Not buying another iPad til I get access to the file system and terminal.

Yeah, I had a guess in the other thread that it would be like this. They'll make the specifications, then everyone else would submit theirs to the MFi program. It makes more sense because you can have styluses catered to different things. Theirs would be just a starting point and mostly for those that want to do casual note taking and sketches.

None of the styluses I have bought have been made out of plastic. I doubt this one will be either.

I tried typing on my iPhone with my Jot Mini the other day... I can still do it! :D But that wouldn't be why you'd be using a stylus today, haha.

Surface has been tempting to me for a long time because of the nice stylus features and I want to draw on my tablet. Love iPad and the ecosystem and the way devs really specialize apps for it and I think even a basic stylus with pressure sensitivity would be a better experience than other platforms because of that. The tons of (hamstrung) stylus options for iPads suggests there is a strong niche of demand for such a thing.

So, bring it, Apple.

Also, the context of the stylus comments by Steve Jobs was that it is horrible if it's necessary to use the device. No one sitting down to write notes with drawings or make a painting or even sign an important digital document is going to be fussed about pulling out the stylus for those purposes. In will be welcome. I don't think Steve of that time would have argued against that.

Furthermore, he had to create a platform that specifically _didn't_ have the stylus to rely on to force developers to push the touch interfaces forward. The size _was_ the best at that time and matching the expectations of cell phone users. Things change, including people's perceptions and needs.

This is specifically for a "Pro" iPad, too, which means it even has one more excuse for making things "complicated".

All that said, this is just an analyst prediction. I think it seems like the right time as well, but we don't know all the thinking Apple is doing on this new device. So I'm hopeful, not yet convinced. It will take an Apple announcement or strong hardware photo rumor for me to be convinced.

Can't we just buy a $10 stylus right now for the iPad? They've been around for a long time, but I don't think I've ever seen someone use one consistently as part of their work process.

Before everyone jumps on the "Steve is rolling in his grave/was wrong" bandwagon, let's remember some key words from this piece: "KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo"
There, now we can think of how foolish we were for taking this article seriously. We'll laugh and laugh and then take a nap :)

Edited for typo.

I'm skeptical that this is an actual product. Im of the opinion that the this and the new MBA are one and the same.

Sigh... Steve is rolling over in his grave :(

Steve never painted I guess... or appreciated great works of art (paintings) , cause they weren't painted with fingers. A stylus is a step in the right direction.

or he just realised the limitation on smaller devices.

Im sure he had stylus's in mind at some point.

I'm more worried about iOS on a 13in tablet than the stylus. It's sloppy if it isn't included. Maybe if Apple unlocks software features in all iDevices to have sensitivity with this Apple branded accesory. I think it would just nicely allow them to forgo a decent storage option for the stylus.

I'm curious to see how that thing will stack up against the next Surface Pro/Windows release.

Please dont say everyone, some of us were very happy with Microsoft including a stylus.
True that. I should have said 'most people'. Not only here on this forum, even other tech blogs mocked Microsoft for the stylus.

I really hope that cross-section drawing isn't accurate. Having the battery be at the very top would result in a very unbalanced pen. The heaviest part of the pen, and its center of gravity, should be where the fingers grasp it near the bottom. A battery at the very top would result in a very wonky and difficult to control feeling.

It's a little different on a 13" screen where you have higher resolution and require finer touch resolution than your finger.

This iPad pro I can guarantee is going to be a surface pro 3 competitor and I bet it's going to have OS X running one or two of apples chips.

You'll be wanting that stylus with a 13" touch screen and OS X.

Having rewatched the 2007 Jobs iPhone announcement recently, this bit particularly stands out regarding this news:

"You have to get them, and then put them away... yeuch!"

Funny, everyone was laughing at Microsoft when they included the Stylus with the Surface Pro, and now it seems Apple is following suit.

I know I know, 'Apple does it better',,, 'now is the time, it was too early two years ago', etc.. but you have to give them credit that they were on to something with the idea of 'productive tablet' rather than a media consumption device.

"Everyone"? No.

Actually, there have been a lot of people on these forums expressing a desire for a high-quality stylus for Apple devices. Personally, I would love one and hope this pans out.

By the way, there's a big difference between having a stylus and having a really good stylus.

Steve Jobs: If you need a stylus, you've already failed.

I agree.

A finger isn't as good for the finer things. If you're annotating a PDF, a stylus is much better that a finger, for example. Things like drawing, painting, are better suited for styluses too. Unless you're finger painting.
