Came here to see all the luddite curmudgeons complaining about "parlor trick" AI that "nobody asked for" and that they "better be able to opt out of". I was not disappointed.

If you people were the majority we'd be using Apple typewriters right now instead of Apple computers.
And we would pay for everything with bitcoin

Do you think Apple is temporarily adopting ChatGPT until it has developed a more satisfying, in-house alternative (as it did with Internet Explorer, Intel chips, and Qualcomm modems), or is it too late to ever catch up?

Who cares? The winner here is us. If they are on top or not is no concern to me, whatsoever. I think this is smart on their part.

Siri works good for setting alarms, timers, and it occasionally tells me the right temperature outside. It’s fairly good at asking some famous person’s age. It’s terrible at lighting and etc in the house. My 15 Pro Max just started not playing music when I ask. I used to say Siri play “(example) Maroon 5“ now I have to say “Siri, use Apple Music to play music by Maroon 5.“ It’s been pretty disappointing. The ChatGPT feature just means that OpenAI has our info and will use it, and Apple doesn’t seem to care. And before anyone says no it runs on the iPhone that’s why it needs 8GB of RAM - false. Apple’s implementation is not running ChatGPT 4o from your iPhone but the cloud.
It’s both. ChatGPT will run externally and the iPhone will ask you if you want to use it, and Siri will be also improved with AI so you don need to use ChatGPT

Mine doesn’t even respond to the prompt anymore

Does anyone else think society will end up being so dumb that we will not need anything if this AI revolution wins out? There was a movie where a guy wakes up in the future and everyone is stupid. In the movie, the guy says you cannot give the plants gatorade they need water. I feel like that’s where we are headed. We will all ask AI to tell us how to water the plants. Anyone know what movie I am talking about? I used to know the name of it, but I asked Siri to figure it out and she didn’t know. I am counting on crowdsourcing due to my own stupidity.
I ask ChatGPT and found this “The movie you’re referring to is Idiocracy (2006), directed by Mike Judge. In the film, an average man named Joe, played by Luke Wilson, wakes up 500 years in the future to find that society has become incredibly unintelligent. One of the key moments is when Joe realizes that people have been using a sports drink called “Brawndo” (similar to Gatorade) to water crops, leading to widespread crop failure. He explains to them that plants need water, not Brawndo.”

I need to watch that movie again. So good. Thanks to those who responded. It sure seems like where we are headed.

I think you misundertood my question. This is not about being no. 1 (I agree with you: who cares?), it's about thinking different and developing your own IA alternative instead of just adopting another company's standard. The same way Apple developed its own computer, OS, Safari, Silicon, Apple 5G, etc.

This is server side and should work on older devices, anything that currently uses Siri. There is nothing going on in the device.

I use ChatGPT daily for work and personal. It’s been life changing. I imagine that with my open ai subscription I’ll continue to use the dedicated app when I need o1 or the browser when I need to use canvas. I am most interested in Siri becoming not a useless POS.

I don't think it's quite that easy or Apple would've done it. Their focus isn't on developing LLMs.

…The ChatGPT feature just means that OpenAI has our info and will use it, and Apple doesn’t seem to care. …

Have you read about how Apple is integrating ChatGPT? They have done quite a lot to protect your data from being used by OpenAI. Apple has a very strict contract with OpenAI to forbids them from training on your data and from retaining any of your data once a request is completed. That contract gives Apple the right to audit the ChatGPT servers to verify compliance. Apple doesn’t even pass your IP address to ChatGPT in the requests. They warn you before each time ChatGPT is called that it will happen and give you the option to cancel.

I would say that Apple does seem to care about this.
