For those that have use this tech before: do you have to hold your device as close to the door handle as shown in the OP photo?
There are 2 types of Car Keys. NFC and UWB.

For NFC, technically yes, but the iPhone has the NFC antenna at the top so it is not as awkward to use. Samsung places it in the middle of the phone so you would have to position it like that. For the iPhone it would work just like Apple Pay.

For UWB, you just have to work up to the car with the phone in your bag or pocket. Similar to a regular key fob. Right now only the BMW iX and the Genesis GV60 support UWB.

I am on my fourth Hyundai via leases and all have been fantastic cars (I came from Mercedes, Honda and Toyota).

My 2020 Sonata Limited is so good I plan to buy it as it is worth 50% more than its lease residual thanks to Covid Craziness.

Good luck with that - a lease is too short to put you in the "engine explode" range that nearly every car they make is affected by.

BYD? Yuck.

That said, Apple should pitch this further to American car makers like Ford.
Marketing wise, yes, yuck, but I doubt if you understand any Chinese beside kneehAo. Why are you hating on a car maker solely based on that it is Chinese? As far as I know, BYD did not steal from anyone to become one of the best electric and hybrid car makers and one of the top battery manufacturer.

And for the pitching to Ford part, it does not work that way. I think it can be almost certain that Apple pitched this to every major car manufacturers in the US at least, and for some reason (probably security concerns or financial reasons), they did not reach a deal.

I have a 21 Nissan Rogue and it comes with an App. I can start/stop lock/unlock doors. I carry the key in my pocket and I just press the handle button to open a door when I get to the car. Nissan has been sending me emails about adding a digital key like this. Is there really and upside to it?

It seems like the only upside is not having to carry a keyfob, the phone will handle it itself. I don't see that as much of a win, either. If I manage to get out the front door without the key fob in my pocket, it's not like I'm going to accidentally drive somewhere without my key - the problem is sort of self-limiting.

The license on one's phone seems more useful as a good backup, if you did go somewhere far away and then realized you forgot your wallet.

Only had the car for 2 months, but the iPhone as a Tesla key has not failed me yet and i wouldn't change a thing
Got the card in the wallet just in case, but have not had to use it yet.
If the phone dies, you can’t unlock or start the Tesla without the card. So, you have to always carry the card. With an NFC-based car key, you can unlock and start the car with a dead phone.

Teslas don’t come with key fobs.

Where do you get this nonsense?

My Mercedes was the one that suffered catastrophic engine seal failure a year in. Fortunately the engine replacement was covered under warranty.

I still use Tesla fob, but it would be great to have this.
I don't trust bluetooth or always on location service for the tesla app.
Do you know how a Tesla fob works? The Tesla App is built to iOS standards which means you can disable location services from iOS if you're that concerned.

BMW has been deleting this feature on most of its cars recently (the chip shortage presumably).

I know because my wife has an X5 with this feature and I’ve been wanting it ever since she got hers in the winter. Been shopping BMW’s for a few months now, more specifically the 5 Series, which is the car this feature was first introduced on.

Have fun fighting with your insurance once your car gets stolen.
Do you use Apple Pay? If so, it’s the same thing. The car keys and credit cards live in the same Apple Wallet app, along with the new HomeKey feature that everyone is going nuts over.

I have a feeling this feature will be very much like Apple CarPlay, where it will be a slow ‘roll out’ and probably won’t have full adoption for years to come from most manufacturers. I do think it’s a really convenient feature to have with the ‘digital car key’, but I feel like there will be quite a few auto manufacturers that will be very stubborn to adopt this ‘tech’. Time will tell.
