I'm just going to lay this out:

10.7, whenever we see it, is going to be REALLY jolting to long time mac users. Given the direction that the company is heading with consumer devices and iOS, I think 10.7 is going to be a lot of that, and not much else.

Touch everywhere.

How do you get "touch everywhere" without dropping support for every existing Mac desktop and laptop system?

Not to mention that adopting touch for the primary interface for a desktop computer flat out doesn't make sense.

I figured with a vast experience in Apple products you would know first hand that Apple drops things rather abruptly.

Yes, but not every existing system, and that's the point. Apple, on a regular basis, drops support for some subset of previous hardware, thereby pissing off a relatively minor percentage of its current user base at a time. That way Apple cycles the pain around while still continually forcing some customers onto new hardware. But I don't think even Apple would leave almost its entire customer base in the dust in a single move.

Hopefully fixes the Nvidia drivers they mucked up in 10.6.4

Yes me too, that's the No.1 priority for me too.
I'm amazed they haven't released a fix for this already.

This. Just want even better performance in Steam!

Well it can hardly get worse.

x2

I'll be satisfied when I can play TF2 in OS X and have it look/run the same as it does in Boot Camp (Windows 7). There is no reason it is not possible.

Though I wonder if some of the Windows 7 vs. Mac OS 10.6 gaming performance (pre 10.6.4) has to do with developers working more on optimizing for 7, or has to do with differences in graphics API's.

The severity of the issues introduced with 10.6.4 suggest though that it is Mac OS X's fault. I suppose this should inspire hope, since that would mean it can be fixed with a software update.

According to the guy who works for Valve, the issues are with the drivers for Mac OS X causing most of the performance decreases.

Yep, since Apple like things 'in the background' to stay 'in the background' with their users, it doesn't look very good when you're getting 85FPS with 10.6.3, then apple releases an update to their operating system and you get an unplayable 14FPS.

When it makes sense and there's a clear path forward. "Touch everywhere" makes no sense at all, and is ergonomically unusable.

10.6.5 huh? It actually is 10.5.13: 10.5.8 plus 5 updates...

I wonder if we will ever see 10.7 or if apple is out of ideas for desktop computers. with that much cash they could hire more OS programers.

Dropping the floppy disk? Sure.

Dropping the MOUSE? Come on.

Hey, it's old technology. :apple::apple::apple::apple:

Oh, and it would allow Apple to drop Flash from OSX and blame Adobe for being lazy, so you know there is a strong chance of it happening.

Leopard required a special update 10.5.6 to run iLife '09. Interesting that in one day we hear rumours about both iLife '11 and a new seed for Mac OS X 10.6.5.

Hopefully 10.6.5 comes out and iLife '11 is released.. with 64-bit Cocoa iTunes.

Up, up, and away..

Magically delicious.

Apples response... get an Apple File Server.

I have an Apple File Server. SMB browsing and using certs (SSL) to encrypt the authenticated binding (fixing the handshake bug) are two of the things I need repaired now. The graphics drivers would be nice to have fixed as well.

I'm hoping that iOS will not replace OsX client. But if it does, I think this...

80's to 2000 was MacOS (20 yrs)
2000 to 2010 was OsX (10 yrs)
2010 to 2015 will be iOS (5 yrs) (if it goes mainstream)
2015 to 2017 (.5) will be ??? (2.5 yrs)

Interesting pattern.

Come updates and upgrades...

Dropping the floppy disk? Sure.

Dropping the MOUSE? Come on.

First, I'd redesign the 15" MBP as such:

Connectors on the left side:

Power
Firewire 3
USB 3.0
USB 3.0
eSata
Graphics
Audio out
Audio in
SDXC
Connector for antitheft cable

On the right side

Not a dang thing. No Rom drive. None.

Centered in front of me would be a dock my iPhone/iPod could lay in (replacing the touchpad entirely).

I use LaunchBar, and every opportunity to use the keyboard without touching the mouse/touchpad at all.

I'm not saying I wouldn't want a better interface for gaming, just saying that the mouse is old tech, USB 2.0, discs, and ethernet can all go buh bye...

And before anyone panics, USB 3.0 to ethernet dongle would suffice. The rest of the empty space (removing the huge ROM drive) could be filled with a second HD bay, or battery. I'd go for the battery myself.

I think you need to read up on the 'mythical man month' ( link ) because I don't think throwing on more programmers will actually fix the problem or if they do hire more folk it is more than likely that they'll be working on non-visible things such as LLVM which will hopefully filter back to the development. At the end of the day if LLVM results in faster and more accurate debugging then it'll negate any need for more staff.

Oh and a side issue, fixing a bug is complex and many times they have to cut their losses if the net result is going to require virtually re-writing a whole subsystem or could result in a cascading effect when it comes to affecting things further up the chain. Take Samba for example, if they replaced it with Samba 4 then you have a chain reaction up the stack to the Finder. So even if they had the man power the question would be whether it is wise to go ahead and make major changes in mid flight.
