I know many people with portable Macs and they couldn't be happier with their machines, as is my case with this wonderful 24" 2.8 iMac.
Of course you know many who couldn't be happier. They'd have to have a failure rate close to 90 percent before it would be unlikely you knew many that were happy.

Again: Apple is by far the most reliable computer company in the world, and consistently rated as the one with fewest quality/build problems among all makers.
No, they consistently rate high in the US when it comes to consumer satisfaction. That's quite a difference as it's about perception, not about build quality.

Therefore, don't take the complaints you see on this forum or on Apple Support as data...Olsen's Theorem always works for these cases, and gives you the impression that all is bad, when the silent happy millions out there are just happy and fully satisfied with their machines.
All fine and well, but with your argument, no matter how many problems there are, even if it were 30 percent failure rate, your argument could be used to dismiss the problems. And because of that, your argument is invalid.

Ok, so what are we thinking for a release date for the MBP? This Tuesday? The 29th? Sometime in early August? What are you're opinions? I think it is going to be the 29th because that date matches with what Best Buy was told about a lack of notebook inventory.

The Apple store no longer lists the Macbook Pro as "new" so a Tuesday rollout could be coming but with the rumors of new designs etc. I'm thinking Steve's ego needs a special event to show it off.

Ladies and gentlemen, that's it. It's coming out on Tuesday. This Tuesday... or the 29th.

It has to... I have to buy before the 29th... *general dejection*

I don't know why I even care... it's really my mom's... I just get to use it until Nehalem comes out. That, and I have to have one for Ireland and I'm NOT buying over there.

Ha, I hope that's confirmation enough, it's been a long wait.

By the way I really like reading your posts, I'm a new poster but a long time reader.

This may be a stupid question, but why does it have to be a Tuesday?

Apple has a long history of releasing their IMPORTANT hardware on Tuesday.

Yeah, that's right. I even own one and I bashed it. Apple COMPUTER, Inc.

Kudos to Fegan for the compliment.

I see....Well, in that case, I hope it's this Tuesday.

:(

Where were you looking?

(Not trying to shatter anyone's hopes, I hope its pretty soon too.)

Awesome. This is good news. New Pros, new MB (I'm buying a MB, although if the MBP is amazing, it might sway me)

I'll be disappointed if I don't see the following in MB:

-redesign, more durable (aluminum or otherwise)
-Dedicated graphics
-upped specs

Pleasssee Apple.

It would there.

He's looking at the Store. The little "New" label by the new things.

Oh, fair enough. I thought that hadn't been there for ages??
Unless thats just the UK education store.

I hope its soon - I'm not even at all bothered about a case design, I just want to buy able to buy before uni and know I'm not missing out on something being released a month later!

Edit: Just seen Peace's last comment, so fair enough! Good signs...

After reading through this post (and skipping all the BR-related stuff), I don't think anybody mentioned Apple's effort to be more "green" starting with the iMacs, which in turn would probably lead to an aluminum MB.

Regardless, I hope a new MBP is released before mid-August because I'm also leaving the country for work and recently handed down my black MB to a sibling.

Speaking of shattering hope:

How long ago did the "new" disappear from the MacBook, or even worse, the Mac Mini?

Of course there will be a CPU speed bump, and the x4500 is a far better IGPU than the current one, but since we've only seen redesign info for the MacBook Pros lately (oh, the irony!), I don't see the MacBooks going aluminum until Nehalem.

sad day..

sad day..

Remember: I'm negative for a reason.

If you expect an update and it doesn't happen, you get mad at Apple for not giving you what you "deserve".
If you expect an update and it happens, you're happy... ish.
If you don't expect an update and it happens, you're ecstatic.
If you don't expect an update and it doesn't happen, you don't get mad, because you weren't anticipating it.

I go for the last two.

I go for the middle two...

Shame that me doing so has absolutely no effect on if there is an update or not :/

sad day..

What's so sad about it?

The current Blackbook MB is a sweet looking unit. If you add to that a CPU speed bump, the new Montevina platform with faster FSB, faster memory, better power saving, and smaller footprint, the improved WiFi-WiMax 802.11n, a led backlit hi-res display, a multi-touch trackpad, and much faster IGPU, what's to be sad about?

Personally (and I think the opinion of many other mac users) the plastic MB housing is better for the market that the MB computer serves.

For students, who are always on the move and connect wirelessly, the plastic housing allows substantially better WiFi reception.

Also the plastic housing seems more durable, the MB can be tossed around into a bag or car and seems to hold up well. The old clamshell ibook was reportedly bullet-proof it was so strong.

The plastic housing insulates better and less heat is radiated to the user's lap. The Aluminum housing allows the heat from the laptop to scorch the lap of the user.

Alright then. I'll be negative with you.

I would consider a smaller footprint and LED display to be a redesign.

For LED, I assume they'd make the screen much thinner.
For a smaller footprint, they'd be making the casing smaller, correct? Or am I misunderstanding 'footprint'?

Also, I saw elsewhere on the board people saying WiMax is unlikely.

Well then it has to be the 29th because some thing this big has to have an apple event unless it doesn't have a case revision.... or if they announce a media event for the very next day. Otherwise they will make a media announcement on Tuesday and it will be a week.

I've been following all of the recent macbook threads; grudgingly digging through the ipod/phone junk and this thread's blu-ray obsession, and with my desire for a new laptop and teasing with what may come, I may have stumbled onto something.

I'll be disappointed if I don't see the following in MB:

-redesign, more durable (aluminum or otherwise)

Obviously, everyone wants a redesigned macbook. The plastic is out-of-touch with the rest of apple's lineup. Rumors are also pouring in of macbook pro redesigns.

I was staring at apple's laptop lineup and thinking of what exactly I want for back-to-school, and I was thinking..the macbook needs to be at least a pound lighter..follow the air and drop the optical drive and give an option for external..and on that note, drop the price $100 so it breaks even.

There. More portable, lighter weight, lower price..wonderful.. Now we need aluminum and black keys..etc.

Then I thought of montevina and how it is supposed to have a smaller motherboard footprint..someone even mentioned they could update the air with it..so why not..oh wait, now the macbook and the air are identical. hmm..perhaps we should just drop the air name and make it the macbook, then lower the price to the macbook level (since it no longer has the new/uniqueness..especially given the new sony that was posted earlier.)

Then we have the pro. Taper its edges, give it the black chicklets, magnetic latch, and a better graphics card. Tada, done.

Late 2008 lineup: Macbook (old air) and Macbook Pro (with recently seen air-like design) Perhaps we could even drop the "Pro" name since they'll look similar.

We're back to the old Powerbook setup with this. 12" - 15" - 17" becomes 13" - 15" - 17" widescreen.

The idea of the low-end macbook with the combo-drive is now rendered useless. and the Pro now stands out as having not only a discreet graphics card, but also a built-in optical drive [blu-ray bto to stop the whining], while the consumer model is made for portability.

The price of the macbook should start at $1k and the Pro's should drop $100 or so, to fall more in-line with the current lineup.

It may take Nehalem to bring forth the sizes needed to pull this off, but my point is: I think we've seen the "new design" for the macbook..and it's called the macbook air. And I think the Pro will be redesigned a bit to match it.

adios.
