they did it with the CRT before.

And if they do go touchscreen the scenario is exactly the same as when they chose to keep the CRT (eMac)

It just seems really unlikely, but I can see your reasoning now. There haven't been any rumors of apple purchasing touchscreens though...

If you're right I'll give you a cookie.

iPod Nano fulfills different niche than the iPod Shuffle. The Nano is meant for someone who wants am iPod while working out, running or something that they can use while doing physical work.

It is meant to strap to your arm and go with you and not be noticed but have enough space to allow you to listen to a variety of music (It is because of this reason I hate the fact that they are widescreen now).

I don't like trying to strap my 60gig iPod to my arm when I am trying to do something that is active. My 4 gig nano though no problem.

Additionally the iPod line serves as a introduction to the other Apple products.

Someone already posted this subject in this thread but no one replied to it so i'll try to emphasize it. like the day when iphone came out, when the new mb mbp comes out will it be hectic? will there be lines in each apple store for them? will it be days after until you can purchase it online?

I highly doubt that on all fronts. :)

$2000 is a lot to throw down, on a revised product. Last year there was no product like the iPhone. This year there still seem to be lines, but the price is cheaper up front so that may be causing more buzz. :)

Please please please release new MBPs in August... I'm going to be travelling and need to get rid of my iMac in exchange for a notebook and I'd hate to buy a MBP only to see new ones a month later... Seems to be a fear associated with any Apple product but maybe this time I can beat it.

Its happens with every product. A new and better model is always round the corner!

Let's keep in mind...

Finally! ...hopefully. I almost bought a MB or MBP in April when I read there might be a refresh. So I waited until WWDC...no refresh. Then I waited until July 14-15 when Centrino 2 came out...no refresh. I don't need a new laptop until school starts, so I figured I might as well wait and see, but it'd be nice to finally stop waiting...especially since this will be my first Mac (and iPod since I'll get the 32GB Touch for $200 after the rebate).

For everyone who is saying "I'll take a new laptop along with the iPod rebate." I might be wrong about this, but I seem to remember that the back to school rebate deals only apply to current hardware which means you won't be able to do that deal if a new MB, MBP, MBA is introduced. Isn't the entire point of the back to school thing to clear out old inventory and make room for the new stuff?

well in order to compete with sony's viaos they have to do a case redesign. the MBP and the MB are to heavy. a pound less is the least. and also reduce the screen becel to get a smaller footprint on the MB.

i just wonder if they get rid of the optical drive across the line. i'm not sure if i like that but then i use my optical once ervery month. please fw800 for MB and an express card slot if you get rid of the superdrive.

I think this may be the trend, considering there are so many options for digital downloads. Come to think of it, the last time I actually used my OD was three months ago. Just like the disk drives, it may take some time to get use to the change. :D

Yes, in fact historically I believe Apple has debuted new hardware after the back to school promotion has ended, so expect new laptops around September.

Actually Apple has also debuted new hardware after the back to school promotion has started, Macbooks and Macbook Pros last year and the iMac on August 7th. I think we will see one very shortly.

I hope it looks something like this!

As much as i love the whole White apple thing that is current. I do agree with comments that its starting to look a little dated.
Does anyone know anything about Apples decision to stop using the white? or is it just because of reasons i've stated?

Yeah, I want a small notebook without an internal optical drive. MacBook Air is ok but too big and slow.

Joshua.

MBP is overdue

Forget the average time between updates. The MBP is overdue for two important reasons: 1. It has an ancient case design that predates the Intel switch and even the Mac Mini. 2. It is the only Mac that has the old style keyboard. The MBP is a flagship product, Apple is all about design, and the MBPP design is severely out of date.

So what's holding them up? Probably a chipset. A new one is coming out shortly.

I hope to see one soon. As soon as it's out, I'm buying one.

Call Apple.

This is interesting, especially considering that I need to order nearly 60 17" MBPs for the business I do, and I am on a time table.

I am sure someone won't be happy if a new design comes out right after ours get distributed... Oh, well. What can you do?

Call Apple. For that size order, you will be put in touch with a rep who can provide you with a timeframe.

My flatmate hooked up his Xbox 360 to a monitor using a standard VGA cable, and that managed to churn out HD (at 720p i think)

and a lot of big screen TV's have VGA input as well as HDMI.... so it's 6 and half a dozen really :)

Ah, but not all 720ps are equal, my friend. VGA is significantly lower quality than HDMI in the realms of HD, because the signal has to be converted. HDMI allows for a one to one data transfer.

I seem to remember that last year's notebook refresh that came during the back to school promo was not excluded from the promo.

Can anyone confirm this?

I recall the same thing. Apple is just trying to sell machines and increase market share. I'm pretty sure that anything that could be released would still qualify.

Also, JUST GET IT OVER WITH!!!!!!!! My old PB is dying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It also wouldn't make sense for Apple to sell low-cost MP3 players (iPod shuffle) but only have 1000$+ computers. As far as marketing logic goes, if the Mac mini is no more (or there is no low-cost replacement), then they should kill both the iPod shuffle and the iPod nano.

That makes absolutely no sense at all. The markets for an Apple comp. and an iPod nano are completely different and have nothing to do with each other whatsoever. The iPod would continue to be a successful product and continue to attract the exact same customers, even if Apple stopped making computers all together. There is no bridge whatsoever between the two markets...except Apple geeks (like me), who just happen to own both.

The Mac Mini, even after all this time, is still problematic for Apple. Everytime they refresh their hardware they have to consider what to do with this product. Each refresh seems to give it just enough to keep being a decent buy for a little longer. Sooner or later they will have to make a decision. Do they pack it with power and know it will outsell all of their great all-in-one devices?......or do they continue to string it along with barely adequate specs making just a cross-over computer, until everyone simply ignores it for the iMac or MB.

Im surprised no one mentioned anything about the future macbooks getting the touchpad gestures found in other laptop lines. I remember waiting for the last refresh, money in hand, only to be frustrated that Apple took such a cheap road with the macbook. Sometimes bumping up speed, etc. isn't enough and that's why i think the next macbook update is much more important as a milestone (in progress) compared to any possible MBP update. Plus, if Apple really want to compete with Sony et al it makes more sense to invest in its consumer lines than in hardcore pro product lines.

I think the likelihood is actually fairly small myself due to exactly the reason you mention above.
However it is certainly how I would have hoped the revision to have panned out. The next revision will be another year or maybe two away and by then touch interfaces will be everywhere.

Here's the thing. Apple places a significant weight on ensuring that that they have very strong profit margins (price they sell product minus cost of producing it). With the mini, they seem to be insisting on keeping a specific margin in place. The only ways to keep a particular margin are to keep costs low or increase price, and as it's their budget machine, they obviously don't want to increase the price. Thus, they only update it when new parts drop enough in price to include them while still keeping the margin they desire.

That being said, they could certainly build a top end mini with better specs for a higher price that would probably sell very well... not sure why they haven't done this yet, except that the price may be close to the low end iMac and would cannabalize the iMac's sales.
