Apple seems to follow a very strict schedule. Last August was iMac's month. This August is MacBooks'.

This is getting pretty easy now.

Every June/July is iPhone's month.

Every September/October is iPod's month.

And every January is new products' month.

Easy.
Thank you Apple.

SHHHHHHH!!

Dont say that!! Apple ppl might hear and then we'll be back at square one with the guessing game!! Lol!!

What are you rambling about.

We do know what machines are being bought. They are MacBooks, MacBook Pros and iMacs. [...] Since day one the Mac Mini hasn't been a big seller.

If you include the Apple TV in Apple's computer line up, you will see that it has outsold the Mac Mini, which was released years earlier.

And where do you get your numbers from? Apple only releases desktop vs laptop numbers, you don't know anymore than any of us which computer sells more than which (except the desktop vs laptop totals).

I also don't get what the problem would be if Apple were to make a more powerful Mac mini and took away iMac sales. As long as the profits are there, Apple shouldn't care wether a headless computer sells more than an all-in-one.

I would love a new MBP.

I am not so concerned about the specs as I am about the case design. To be honest, all this talk of making it look like the MBA with tapered design and black keyboard makes me nervous. I'm not crazy about the MBA design but I know some people love it.

I don't like the silver with black keyboard either....Just something about it doesn't mesh well.

I agree.

VHS to DVD was like cassette tape to CD
DVD to Blu Ray is like CD to... SACD? Audio DVD? Not sure...

Regardless, not as significant of a technological change - analog to digital yes, digital to better digital, not so much. From a storage perspective, sure, Blu Ray is an advancement, however as I mentioned above, from a content delivery standpoint, blu ray is a failure - an opinion shared by Mr. Jobs himself.

That's exactly what I'm trying to say.

I personally watch a lot of movies. I have about 1000 DVDs, however they're all sitting down on a shelf in my basement. Any new DVD's I get I rip (which thanks to Kaleidescape's win over the DVD CCA) to hard disk and either stream it to my Apple TV or load it on the Apple TV. I get Dolby Digital and a great upscaled picture on my Pioneer Elite Plasma. The actual DVD joins the rest of my DVDs down stairs. Now when I have guests over I don't have to bring them down to the basement and pick through all of the cobwebs to pick a movie, we just have to click Apple TV on my Universal Remote, select movies and then flip through my movies. And even more common, if there is something new, I just go to the Apple TV store and select a movie.

Are the HD movies in iTunes better than Blu-Ray? No! Are they better than DVD and Cable? Yes. This is documented else where. Is $4.99 better than spending $20 + for a Blu-Ray movie that I'll watch once. Yes!

HD is here to stay no question, but I stand by my opinion, Blu-Ray will be a footnote alongside HD-DVD.

1. Actually I do know. But that's all I say about that.

2. As an Apple Share Holder I do care if a $599 Mac Mini cuts into the sales of $1199+ iMac.

If the iMac weren't selling like hot cakes I might re-think my decision and even still I would lower the price of the iMac first.

tuesdays!

Is it just me or does it seem like any time Apple introduces a new product without a major introduction beforehand they do it on a Tuesday? I think I'm going to go crazy every Tuesday morning for the next few weeks. i want my updated MBP before September!!

Although maybe a case redesign is enough for a PR event. If so then we have to watch out for those invitation things going out....

They still call it the "new, more powerful" MBP. Does that mean in their eyes it's not time for a re-fresh?

Also note (by looking at the buyers guide here on macrumors) that the MBP/Powerbook has been refreshed last in Feb, which might not be far enough in the past for a new refresh.

Of course I'm hoping they'll do it anyway.

By law, you can call a product "new" until six months after its release. Apple knows that people are more likely to buy it if they think it is a new model. Therefore, they'll keep calling it new until the middle of August or until a new model comes out.

Interestingly, with Apple's six month update cycle, every model could conceivably be advertised as new for the duration of it's time on the site...

If I buy a BR film, I'm planning to watch it more than once, if not then I rent it for the same price or less. And some of us like the bonus features too - don't see those on downloads.

At this point nobody can predict the future, I see Blu-ray as the next mass-market format. It's already far beyond what Laserdisc or anything like a niche format had achieved, and it's outpacing DVD in terms of sales since inception. But time will tell what happens.

I just want the option in my rampantly expensive new laptop...

I hope it looks something like this!

As much as i love the whole White apple thing that is current. I do agree with comments that its starting to look a little dated.
Does anyone know anything about Apples decision to stop using the white? or is it just because of reasons i've stated?
Oh no! :( That is a TERRIBLE Computer! NO offense to you...

Yeah, I want a small notebook without an internal optical drive. MacBook Air is ok but too big and slow.

Joshua.

I hope that was sarcasm. I just hope that this rumor winds up being true, as i would really enjoy a new MB before school starts.

Since day one the Mac Mini hasn't been a big seller.

If that were truly the case it wouldn't have lasted this long. Believe it or not, there are people in the world that already have a Keyboard, Mouse, and Monitor and need a small form factor computer.

The Mac Pro is gigantic and too expensive for the average person. The iMac is great for people that don't have any computer or want a complete refresh. But, there are far more users out there in the small form factor, BYODKM boat.

Open your mind.

1. Well, if you really know, then it's sad news to hear the Mac mini isn't selling well. Understandable given the price and the hardware, however. Let's hope Apple updates it or replaces it with something more appropriate (lower price with similar/lower specs or higher price with more decent specs).

There is so many people who claim that the Mac mini isn't selling well but the general public has no numbers to base their claims on. I hope you understand my skepticism when you say that "you actually know".

What bugs me with your statement, however, is that if the Mac mini hadn't been a strong seller from day one it would not have survived the PowerPC to intel transition. It would also not have survived up to this point. And if it's not currently selling well right now it's because it's outdated hardware at today's (Apple) prices. I'm sure all Apple systems see slower/less sales at the end of their cycle. And given the current cycle of the Mac mini, and the last update which was a simple slight bump in specs, it's no surprise that it's not selling well.

2. Would you care if both units made 250$ in profits? Given the current price and the current specs, it wouldn't surprise me. ;)

3. I seriously hope Apple has an upgrade or a replacement planned for the Mac mini. If they don't, I hope they'll watch the marketplace and see how people will fight over the remaining Mac mini systems. There IS a market for the Mac mini, but perhaps Mac mini buyers are more aware about computer hardware than regular people who buy iMacs, hence the slow sales right now.

How is this a surprise? Around this time of the year, especially before Thanksgiving, there are usually new Macs.

They better fix those horrendous, god awful macbook displays that looked more washed up than something you d get out of the lowest denominator generic notebook, truely awful.

I too would like to see a Mini update, but if :apple: won't do that, then how about a nice dock for the 'Books so that we could enjoy larger monitors/keyboards and other peripheral devices while at home?

It's not a SURPRISE as such. People have been waiting for this for a long time. (As with any update I guess.) But it's definitely not a given that there will be an update, so threads like this are needed.

You could say its not a surprise that there's a new iPhone, or any updates, so why bother making a website like this one!

Anyway, I seriously hope Apple DO do this before September, in time for university. Surely they'll be missing out if not... I'm happy with the current model but buying one a month before a big update for uni will be a bummer.

And Joshua (I can't be bothered to get a quote) I know you've already got slated but you want a laptop smaller AND faster than the MBA??? You'll end up with no money and no battery life. And probably no internal parts that haven't melted...

Well, to each his own - I happen to think the PowerBook/MBP keys are far better than the plastic square keys on the MacBooks and the new aluminum keyboards. They might not look as fancy, but they have a great feel for typing. If the new MBP's are going to go in the direction of the plastic keys, then I'm glad I bought a previous-model MBP so I can have that keyboard for a little longer.

They feel OK, they just don't look good. That style of key looks great on my Lombard (bronze) and my iceBook (white), but the silver really looks cheap.

I am amazed how comfortable and quick the chiclet keys are -- and my wife prefers the feel.

I remember those. only 2kb ram or a 16kb if you plugged a module on the back. once you ran out of memory, you lose the prior lines you typed so good luck with even the simpolest basic program.

Someone let my mom borrow one for me, way back when - for my first computer. After about 1/2 hr, I said nah get me a commodore 64.

So funny -- my dad also borrowed a Sinclair to try it out. After three hours of struggling to get a picture on the TV, and a half hour of painful typing, and no storage media to save your program, we packed it up and gave it back. Got a Vic-20 instead!

Its just a matter of getting used to it. It's far easier to adjust to keyboards than people think. The chicklets look more 'current' than the traditional mbp keyboard. I guess they are easier to clean too.

HDMI output would be amazing. It seems to be sensible as nearly all HDTVs have HDMI input and it would make the process of hooking a laptop up much simpler.

Am I wrong in saying this? Is there any distinct benefit/reason for using a DVI connection instead of HDMI?
I personally know three people who use 30" ACDs with their MBPs (they are architects and graphic designers).

I myself am looking to get a pair of 24" monitors and a Matrox TripleHead2Go for all of my audio and video work on my MBP.

You can't do either of those with HDMI.

Aluminum/Aluminium MacBook - Would this be a Revision A? Aren't Rev.As cursed?:)

Cheers,
OW

Apple should just only replace the plastic with aluminium in that case. No new design for the MacBook other than aluminium instead of plastic.

I don't think replacing MacBook's plastic with aluminium will affect the quality of the machine if they don't change anything else in design.

id assume they'll keep the white casing for the smaller line/macbooks, as they they just released the iPhone with an all white casing..so apparently they dont seem to think the style is dated yet lol.

id like to see some comparable updated specs, with alot of the new CPUs being released (http://www.xoticpc.com/ - yeah theyre ugly as sin, but have some pretty good specs for a portable system) and thats what counts for me.

I really like the fell of the MBP keyboards, if they had a fullsize desktop version of that id snatch one up personally, feel way better than the MB keys IMPO

What about the mid-tower form factor? You know, MOST OF THE PC WORLD? Those things that don't use workstation-grade parts and not tiny mobile parts? How about one of those!?

I'm not holding my breath, but it's nice to say every once and a while, just so I don't forget.

With Montevina's launch, NVIDIA released a bunch of new mobile GPUs too. A bunch!

9800M GTX
9800M GT
9800M GTS
9700M GTS
9700M GT

I'd be happy if any of these were in the next Macbook Pro (which I have no doubt there will be some time before the end of 2008). A Mobility 3870 would be great too, but it'd be nice to see a brand new graphics card in a Mac for a change.

I would rather see an ATI card in the next MacBook Pro, like something between ATI Radeon Mobility HD 3600 to HD 3800.
No Nvidia cards in the next MacBook Pros please. :)

Absolutely correct, and that's why SJ must be seen as a market genius...even with HD-DVD (rightly) dead, Blu-Ray hasn't even started to touch the real audience...why? Because quality is only marginally better, because most people still don't have HD TVs, and because prices are ridiculously high even with Sony as the sole winner of the format battle.

When CDs and DVDs came out, the overall leap in quality AND convenience was obvious...now, when I see a Blu-Ray offer, I just see two things: "overpriced" and "marginally prettier image"...nothing else.

GO APPLE!
