And what are you going to do with that Blu-ray player. Back up data? Blu-ray is slowly disappearing. Between Apple TV, xBox supporting NetFlix, upscaling technology of DVDs equaling Blu-Ray and price of storage dropping, the need for Blu-Ray is disappearing.

Not to get off topic but you are insane if you think upscaled DVD's are as good as Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray is not going anywhere, not everybody wants a crappy compressed lower than DVD quality movie experience provided by the likes of Netflix and Apple TV (even the "HD" movies are reduced resolution). Additionally, broadband adoption is still not where it needs to be for it to reach enough people.

Companies like Kaleidescape (http://www.kaleidescape.com/products/) have products which upscale a DVD to 1080P that rivals Blu-Ray.

Flash drives are quickly approaching the same sizes of a Blu-Ray disc and at much lower price.

However, with said I do agree that some may need Blu-Ray drives, but I maintain my opinion that unless Blu-Ray prices come down (to below $200) along with the blank Blu-Ray disc prices, the technology will be dead faster than HD-DVD.

If you want to talk about affordable solutions, I wouldn't bring up Kaleidescape. And sure you can make upscaled content look good, but it doesn't rival true HD, no matter what their sales documentation says.

Blu-ray will be coming down in price, and we'll likely see $200 players for christmas this year. The internal PC Blu drives you can buy now are under $150 for read only at Tiger Direct. The media will become cheaper as there is more call for it, same as happened with DVD. down the road I imagine I'll have a spindle, and make test burns, etc just like you do with DVDs now (and did with CD-R before that)

Flash drives are great, but they're not right for some things. If I need to make copies of a project to share around with my crew, I don't want to buy flash drives and give them out, I want to give them a DVD (or BR) that I can give to them and forget about.

I think it's very premature to write this technology off, because it fills a need that many of us have, and it's only going to become bigger, not smaller in the years to come. The days when we lose physical media completely are at least a good 10 years off, and maybe never. Some of us like buying discs and having a physical object that someone can't suddenly render useless the way a download could be. Depends on your mindset I suppose.

No, I'm not confusing Blu-Ray with HD-DVD.

I don't really care what way is the most potential or something. Just want to send out a clear 1080p signal to my projector and tv.
I hope apple will concentrate a bit more on that HD media street and I'll be a happy man.

Blu-ray is important because it will become as mainstream as DVD's are today. Your arguments for why blu-ray is not necessary are almost identical to the arguments against DVD's when they first came out.
Face it: DVD's will become like VHS, and Blu-ray will dominate!

That is the whole point of wanting an HDMI port on the machine! To have the Audio and Video and not having to hookup an adapter, an audio cable, and a DVI cable... So your reasoning is more valid reversed: They should do HDMI and then sell a HDMI to DVI/Audio cable. So when you hook up your MacBook to your TV or an external monitor, you have just one tiny little cable to connect to the 'Book.

ATI graphics cards (since the 3000 series) have had a sound card added to most of them and the boards themselves allow for sound to be sent via a dvi to hdmi adapter, the sound is sent through the unused vga pins I assume.

Personally I have no issue with proprietry sockets (prefer a nice uniform option across more than one product though - ipod style) as long as the cost of adapters isn't stupid and you atleast get a dvi one included with the system.

Call Apple. For that size order, you will be put in touch with a rep who can provide you with a timeframe.

Actually, the Apple Rep is not allowed to give this type of information (what will be new and when) but they can talk about volume pricing.

I don't think Apple is in a rush to focus on incorporating Blu Ray drives into their machines any time soon since Steve Jobs thinks the technology is a failure with respect to content delivery.

Looks more like a Timex Sinclair to me!

Ha ha! That was my very first computer!

10 print "the OS still wipes the floor with windows";

- Mac mini, days Since Update = 346 (Avg = 188)
- iMac, days Since Update = 81 (Avg = 211)
- Mac Pro, days Since Update = 192 (Avg = 217)
- MacBook, days Since Update = 143 (Avg = 192)
- MacBook Pro, days Since Update = 143 (Avg = 194)
- MacBook Air, days Since Update = 185 (Avg = 0)

MacBook, MacBook Pro and iMac users have no rights to complain IMHO. And while the Mac Pro is due for an update, the Mac mini should still come first.

I may be the first to say this, but I don't think you can call the last MBP 'update' much of an update. I almost bought one in the spring, but as I was looking at the specs of the 'updated' model against the previous model, I figured I would be happier buying a refurbished older model and saving money. Needless to say, I didn't buy a computer.

I think it says something when somebody who is using a 3 year old PowerBook G4 can't bring himself to buy the latest revision because it isn't good enough for the price.

If apple would update some of the features in the MBP that many other computers in the same price range have had for months, maybe I could bring myself to pay that much to upgrade.

yes it will dominate. but what? the entire market or a small niche of people wanting to have the best video like audiophiles for music?

i was initially impressed by blue ray but now i think i wouldn't spend money on it unless the prices come down to under $15 for a movie and $1 for an empty disk. the question is how many people think like me? 5% or 90%? my guess is it's not clear what the market will do and so apple will wait.

Well, I am going to guess that the update will happen on July 29th. Thats a little more than two weeks away.

Okay Apple, give me a nice aluminium MacBook (I really don't need a Pro for my mobile use) and i buy it on the spot.

yaa... I just want an aluminum macbook (since I'm switching over--my first mac), so I don't mind too much if its a MB or MBP... iunno about the chicklet keys though... I tried out both keyboards at the Apple store, but both seemed ok (though I didn't like the black ones that were on the Air--black + aluminum in that combination didn't seem right somehow)

Come on apple! I'm holding myself back from running out to get one just to wait for some kind of update :D

I agree.

VHS to DVD was like cassette tape to CD
DVD to Blu Ray is like CD to... SACD? Audio DVD? Not sure...

Regardless, not as significant of a technological change - analog to digital yes, digital to better digital, not so much. From a storage perspective, sure, Blu Ray is an advancement, however as I mentioned above, from a content delivery standpoint, blu ray is a failure - an opinion shared by Mr. Jobs himself.

Well this is exactly why I moved back to Windows on my Pro workstations.
You just cant swap a CPU then some time later a MB and Memory to upgrade your system to a decent #. You have to flat out $2000+ each and every time if you want to have a fastest possible setup (which for some is very important).
I'm keeping the iMac but my Pro is gone. We'll see what Snow brings but I don't think much will change.

This is interesting, especially considering that I need to order nearly 60 17" MBPs for the business I do, and I am on a time table.

I am sure someone won't be happy if a new design comes out right after ours get distributed... Oh, well. What can you do?

60 laptops seems a bit over the top, for anyone.... ;)

i dont know if some one said this already but the new iphone cases are black and white so i have a feeling apple will stick with the black and white theme but perhaps just remodel it a bit, but yah i definatly think they arent going alluminum with the macbook!!!! obviously the macbook pro will go/stay aluminum...what do you guys think??

I am really hoping we don't see a case redesign but I suspect we will, since Apple now seems enamored with the ugly yuppie swooped aluminum. I was planning to give my wife the Blackbook and get a new Montevina-based one, but if they go to aluminum I'll get another of the current ones instead first.

Apple seems to follow a very strict schedule. Last August was iMac's month. This August is MacBooks'.

This is getting pretty easy now.

Every June/July is iPhone's month.

Every September/October is iPod's month.

And every January is new products' month.

Easy.
Thank you Apple.
