1.9 GHz and 2.1 seem like odd number though in general. Did Apple just over clock the 1.7 and 2.0 chips respectively? ;)

It certainly looks that way - although wouldn't that be more likely to make the chip overheat and therefore fire up the fans, thus nullifying it's "Whisper Quiet" moniker.

Maybe they redesigned the housing to get better airflow, thus better cooling?

It certainly looks like a "We can't just add a camera and remote (and average-joe isn't going to understand PCI-e)" move.

Thanks for clarifying. :) In that case, what harm is there in canceling your iMac order? Wait a few days until the 19th, see what is released, and make your decision then, when you have all of the hard facts before you. Either order the new PowerBook, or re-order the iMac. I doubt shipping times would change too drastically on the iMac, of course you never know...

Edit: Just saw that you canceled. I hope you'll be happy with your decision. Even if you end up going with the iMac when all is said and done, you'll at least know you made the best decision and had all the options availble to you.

Well I'll probably ending buying both anyway :p Since I'm required to have a PowerBook (yes a powerbook) for School. I just want more money in the account for wednesday just in case.

IIRC the low power G5 doesn't run up to 2.1 GHz, so probably not the chip in the new G5.

Yeah, I know it seems a bit high but IBM announced last July and IBM always announces a lower clock rate than what Apple ends up delivering. For example: the 1.67 970 was announced as 1.42 GHz prior to Apple upgrading the G5.

Also the low power 970 does not have to run at minimum heat spec in an iMac because the heat is not as important, therefore Apple could overclock the piss out of the low power chip in the iMac. Something they couldn't do in the PB.

The advantage to the PB would be 1.7-1.9Ghz low-power G5, faster FSB,64 bit, PCI-E chipset, better gpu, ability to support HD playback and editing.

10.4.3

So I'm guessing we can expect OS X 10.4.3 on Wednesday, too.

And maybe iTunes 7.

Yeah, I agree - heat and noise are definitely major issues when it comes to the iMac, so perhaps this isn't the case.

Oh, and you forgot DDR2 memory and larger HDs as well. ;)

Nothing wrong with that. Let us know what you end up doing come Wednesday! :)

Just Cancelled the Order, Hopefully something good will come Wednesday. If not I'll be reordering the iMac, not that it's a bad thing, It's just that the PB's are long over due for something Major.
Good move. The new iMac is really lovely and it'll still be there next week. If the new crop of releases is not what I expected, I will order that iMac along with you.

Yep, if you can find them, use them. As for credit cards, I could care less what the interest rate is on them since I pay them off right away. But yeah, 0% offers are great - I negotiated a 0% interest loan on my car when I bought it - it's the only reason I used a loan to pay for it, actually.

i do the same thing. i pay my credit cards off as soon as the bill arrives. i have read though, that this is frowned upon by the credit bureaus. it has something to do with them thinking you can't maintain a monthly bill so you pay it all off very quickly. not sure if i buy into that or not.

That camera, remote hardware, PCI-E bus, x600XT GPU all add heat. That's why I am wondering if they are over-clocking the piss out of the low-power G5. I am guessing that the over-clocked low-power 970 coould be overclocked and still run cooler than the standard 970 at 2.1 Ghz.

Upgrade PB?

So I'm a current owner of the 1.67Mhz 17" PowerBook that came out last February. I love it. But I'm also extremely seduced by talk of DDR2 memory and HD displays. That, and I'm kinda possessive about having the best of the best. :p

So should I upgrade? I'm an educator, so I can sell my current PB for around $2000-2200, I think, and still only pay $2399 (if they don't change the price) for a new, updated 17" PB.

I'm honestly at a loss of opinion about this; I'm happy either way, though I do like the idea of upgrading while the going is good. (Well, what do you do with all your old Macs?) Oh, and would you sell your PB before or after the event? I'd think it'd be wiser to sell beforehand, then after, no?

Don't buy into it. Here in Canada at least, when I applied for a mortgage I had the second highest credit rating the guy had ever seen, and I do just that - pay everything off instantly, never owe anyone money. The only loan I had was my car loan, which like I said was 0%, hence the only reason I had it in the first place! ;)

God for you though - although I fully realize some people need to take out loans, etc., there are many people who do for other reasons, never think things through, and end up paying through the nose for it. Ah well, as they say, a fool and his money are soon parted.

Once again, good thought. :) Perhaps an overclocked 970GX would indeed still run quieter/cooler than a normal 970 at the same speed. Until someone proves this one way or the other, I'll keep this open as a possibility - why not, after all, Apple did say there were some more exciting PPC products in the pipeline - maybe this is one of them.

I'm the same way! I have the current 15" Model Top of the Line w/ the same specs as your 17". My 15" is already up on eBay. Whatever comes out wednesday in regards to powerbooks, i think i'll be buying it.

it's pretty much a fact now that new ones are on the way, so put it up on ebay for a 5 or 7 day auction w/ no Buy it now, and just wait and see what happens wednesday, and if not then end the auction.

Hmm, I pay off the credit cards in full too, but then I get bombarded with 0% interest offers just so that I get in the habit of *NOT* pay off the bills in full. But I won't fall victim to their schemes; I will not spend more than my means.

Do you really want to risk that? You have a very nice laptop regardless what all the Intel wannabes say around here.

What if Apple does not announce a new PB and you have sold yours?

Are you going to buy a new one again only to have Apple announce a better model in January?

Apple is in awesome shape...

This is probably Apple's best year in its history...

The new, unexpected iMac is by far THE BEST personal computer offering of the market...the Nano is a cash cow...and new PMs will kick anyone's ass in the pro level...

The strongest revenue streams, the best computer line ever, the best iPods...updates are just coming and coming...this is really amazing, as the pipeline is finally showing up...GO APPLE!

Of course having said all that. Apple probably had less design issues and expense to engineer for the 970GX in the iMac. The PB is a different animal and Apple may very well not want to spend the effort on the PB pre-Intel.

We shall see! Don't you love pre-Apple events!

I give up on the speculation. Why hasn't someone got a new iMac G5 running System Profiler. I hadn't even thought about this before today. Now it's really bugging me.

Indeed. It would be way easier to drop a 7448 in the PowerBook than a 970GX, so if we see any form of processor upgrade my money is on the former, not the latter.

Sell it after you get the new one. It's much easier to transfer the data with firewire target mode than to use CD's or DVDs

Sell the old on on E-Bay. You will get top dollar for one that new.

Don't worry, it's only a matter of time - patience. I am very interested to find out as well. ;)
