Yeah must definitely be a difference between canadian and u.s. credit ratings.

For most people I'd say its still best not to carry any balance, but any research you put into the U.S. system will strongly tell you that showing you can carry a pay a balance over time can be helpful to your credit rating.

However, I just think in order to not get in trouble, one might as well not carry a balance.

Back to these events scheduled, I wonder if Steve will be the one making this announcement? I know of an event or two in the past that weren't done by Steve. He sure has been busy lately!

This is nuts. Why pay interest rates when credit cards are falling on each other to give 0% rates (introductory). I milk them for what they are worth and then cancel them. Also, if you have or ever had a car loan or home mortgage and pay them on time, your credit score will go up, but if you are carrying excessive balance on your credit card, the score will go down.

Ok guys, This isn't a Credit Card Interest Rate thread, let's get back on topic, about the press event for the 19th.

Yeah, we're done, it's been relegated to PMing now, no worries. ;)

So when do people think the Apple displays will be updated again? I was initially thinking MWSF at the earliest, most likely a few months afterwards, but now with this "Pro" event next Wednesday, and with the new iMacs coming out with different and better 20" LCDs than the Apple 20" displays themselves, I wonder! New displays are imminent, as we know Apple has improved technology now, but the question, as always, is when...

The Displays in the new iMacs are better than the Alu Displays?? Maybe the Displays will be the One More thing of this event, with price drops on each.

*Must get to Sleep* Apple Stop keeping us up for 5 days straight before an event.

Price drops would be nice, and almost expected due to lowering material costs for the LCDs nowadays, and yes, upgrades are imminent.

And yes, the iMac's 20" display is now brighter and has twice the contrast ratio of the 20" Apple display, therefore making it the best 20" display!

Does anyone think this will make sense? Rev. A of Intel PB's Announced on Wednesday. Rev. B Apple Expo Paris Next Year??
No, Intel Macs now is highly unlikely. Waiting means more software for them--right now, the selection would be very lean, mainly Apple's own apps. Most other apps would run slowly or maybe not at all.

And new laptop chips (Yonah) are coming from Intel early next year. Apple would want to wait for those at least.

Very doubtful, I'd wager money on it not happening in fact. There is not enough software developed yet for the Intel platform, and what exactly would Apple move to in terms of chip architecture? Apple is eyeing up the Yonah, and further down the road, the Merom, so we will not see any portable Intel Macs until 2006 for sure.

A faster CPU in the first place was a nice bonus IMO, I wasn't really expecting that. As for the GPU, Apple couldn't go too crazy due to heat restrictions. I think it was a significant upgrade solely because they went to PCIe myself - which bodes well for the PowerMac upgrades as well. ;cool:
I wasn't expecting a new iMac at all; that came out of far left field. Even with all the enhancements they cut the price by $100 (20" model). It's worth repeating the enhancements:

Faster CPU
Faster GPU
PCIe graphics
iSight with higher resolution
Better LCDs with higher nits and contrast
533 MHz DDR2 memory and 700 MHz frontside bus
Mighty mouse
Remote control
Thinner form factor and lighter weight
Photo Booth
Front Row

All of these are improvements over the predecessor and yet the price is $100 less.

I think I just sold one to myself.

I think Apple displays will be updated at the announcement also. I mean if you go aout and buy a new PM and there is a new or improved display available wouldn't you wantto drop some cash on one of those puppies also? I would!

I am looking forward to next week, although my banbk balance may take a beating!

Absolutely.

And don't forget larger HD capacities as well. Hmm, and were the iMacs SATA before?

Yep, definitely make sense. Normally I'd say yes, displays will probably get updated soon due to the iMacs essentially already getting them, but with PowerMacs and PowerBooks (and who knows what else!) getting updated next Wednesday (presumably), that would be an awful lot for an event like this! Mind you, Apple may simply do one of its silent updates like it has done in the past as well. Make a couple big announcements on Wednesday, then on the following Wednesday (or perhaps the Tuesday just before) announce something on its own, like the displays.

It's going to be interesting to see! (pun intended)

It would make sense for Apple to update the Displays with new, better models because they haven't been updated in over a year, and the Macintel issue is a non-issue with a display.

And plus, we know a new improved 20" display already exists since the iMac is using it. So "if" isn't even the question, it's "when" - when will Apple decide to release updated displays? It would definitely make sense to do it around the release of the PowerMacs, so will it be Wednesday itself, or some other date in close proximity to next Wednesday?

Interesting to note - This is the THIRD of these EVENTS
-The first was the Nano (who knew but a few days before)
- The second was the vPod (we knew , but then we didn't, but then we did) plus new Apps and iMac (substantial vision shift with it)
- the Third will hopefull follow suite and be fairly prominant in ways we do and dont expect....POWER LINE
it seems like it's all building to Something Big, not just in machine but in Scope.

I hadn't thought of displays, but seems Poignant given the present state of the alumns...
ASIDE (Figures, I just bought the new Dell 24" lcd, which came today - I did painstaking research (LCD's V CRT's etc) and for the price 860ish at the time it's great. And while I love the Apple look & Design, I am keen on having my power set up be not All Apple.
Subsequently, my neighbor, bless his soul, saw my display arrive today and gave me an extra 24" Sony/integraph CRT hd monitor he had laying around !
I was going top send the Dell back, but Holy Smoke, I love this 2 monitor set up -
Please don't think I am gloating - previously I had just a laptop for many many years and
anyway, This means New Displays Are coming. (Good things happen right before better things do).
Cheers,
J

hmm, we'll see... but now that we're on the topic, when the mactels finally come out, will apple have to put those godawful 'Intel Inside' stickers on the covers of powerbooks and powermacs? that would just be...wrong. that would seriously be a deal breaker for me

One thing is certain though. If Apple did have to put the stickers on then they would redesign it and make it look half way decent. But I don't know why Intel would have to advertise that their chips are in macs. It's widley known that Apple is going Intel only.

random thought... now that they have "front row", does anyone think its likely they would release a mac mini to target the living room at the wednesday event? i know oct 19 is highly speculated to be new pbs and pms but jobs mentioned the "holiday season" on the 12th and a simple mac mini update could be a nice side note to mention along with the pro stuff

The Mac mini currently doesn't have the horsepower to run Front Row, and with the product being very recently updated, I do not see another Mac mini update for quite some time. And until that update happens (probably at MWSF?) the Mac mini will not have Front Row.

I don't think Steve will let that happen.
At least I hope not. EWW!

We know they are shipping updated product for the $599 and $699 minis, but is that the true "Mac mini (late 2005)"? Maybe the 1.5 GHz parts they are shiping are intended to replace the $499 machine and the $599+ boxes will get even faster CPUs GPUs and hard drives plus IR & Front Row when the formal upgrade is announced?

OK, maybe it's just wishful thinking. ;)

I see this as unlikely, but hey, never say never - nothing wrong with being optimistic! ;) :)

Even if the high end Mac Minis saw another upgrade though, I question if it would still be enough. I'm thinking a 970 might be in order, not a 7447 for starters, and that coupled with a better (read higher power = more heat) video card makes for a very unlikely upgrade to the mini at this point.

Seriously. Apple lust is making me sleepy. By the fifth day I'll be hallucinating from exhaustion so that when he makes his announcements I won't believe it's really happening...

Hang in there though. ;) Only five more days and then we'll have new pbs and we can all catch up on sleep (after 5 more days of reading what everyone here thinks of the new pbs...)
