Why So Glum?
Hey Everyone,
First time writer, long time reader.
I was curious about a couple of things.
In a Mac it seems that the number one thing everyone relies on is processor power. Is the number by which the quality of a system is determined on a new update?
In a PC there are numerous things that affect how well a computer runs. Front side bus, PCI speeds, interface speeds, hard drive speeds, etc. All these things can determine how fast a computer actually runs, in addition to the processor. In a PC world stand point processor speeds have gotten so... bulky
that most of the processor speed and resources are wasted, leaving ALOT of free resources.
Now assuming that Mac architecture still follows a bit of the same idea would that not mean that processor speed would not be the only determining factor in overall system performance?
If we look at the updates on the brand new iMac we have PCI Express graphics, DDR2 Ram, improved chipset (which means better through put), etc. That should mean that the new iMac is a huge upgrade from before.
Would I be correct to assume this?
If so would that not mean that if the power macs and the power books updated the chipsets to PCI-Express, DDR2, faster hard drives, fast wireless, more standard ram, better resolution displays (on PB, of course), etc. That this would not be a worthwhile upgrade?
Even if processor SPEED does not change but they all switch to the latest cores from the new processors that in itself would make the system more efficient. On top of that weve already been virtually guaranteed that the PowerPC will NEVER reach 3.0GHz in a Power Mac, hence the switch to Intel (among numerous other reasons).
Couple that with Apples ability to streamline almost every app to take full advantage of system resources and I think we've got a pretty substantial upgrade.
Again Im a new poster and member of Mac forums and if this wrong then please, by all means let me know.
I appreciate everyones time and discussion.
I hope this is a great update, good enough to carry us until the start switching to Intel based technologies.
