My quasi-realistic predictions for the 12" PB:

*Same as today's models but*

- 128MB Graphics Card (optional)
- Hard Drive up to 120GB (optional)
- Backlit Keyboard (optional)
- 512MB Built in RAM, allowing for max of 1.5GB

This is sort of my wish list, as I'm buying a 12" Powerbook in the next 3-4 months.

The article didn't make any mentions to the 12" Powerbook. These are some big changes that I don't think you'll see. Though yes, they would be nice

Okay, here's my guess for the PowerMacs.

$2999
2x Dual Core PowerPC 970MP @ 2.5GHz
1MB L2 Cache - 1.25GHz Frontside Bus
1GB DDR2 SDRAM (expandable to 16GB)
250GB Serial ATA
16x SuperDrive dual-layer
Radeon X800 256MB - PCIe 16x

$2499
2x Dual Core PowerPC 970MP @ 2.3GHz
1MB L2 Cache - 1.15GHz Frontside Bus
512MB DDR2 SDRAM (expandable to 16GB)
250GB Serial ATA
16x SuperDrive dual-layer
Radeon X800 128MB - PCIe 16x

$1999
2x Single Core PowerPC 970fx @ 2.3GHz
512kB L2 Cache - 1.15GHz Frontside Bus
512MB DDR400 SDRAM (expandable to 8GB)
160GB Serial ATA
16x SuperDrive dual-layer
Radeon 9600 128MB - AGP 8x

a 500 dollar price drop (~20%) on the 2x single core 2.3ghz powermac is not enough IMHO.

the imac got 100 dollar off + better gpu + better superdrive + better display + iSight + DDR2 + HD + remote + mighty mouse. that is way more than 20% off. also in your model the dual dual cores give you ~70% more speed + better GPU + ram + PCI-E for the same price as before.

but i like your observation that they leave the current 2.3 as an entry model. i think that is reasonable and that would be my choice. i think either better equipped (1 GB, x600xt, airport + Bluetooth, 250 HD) or $1799.

This company (and a few others) have 600K or 1.3M pixel comeras in the latch.

These are really impressive machines. I hope Apple Intels can come close in specs. Also i'd like to see the new pro line compare to this. Here's to wednesday.

Did you see the battery life on that thing? I certainly hope the new Powerbooks have more than one hour battery life...

Oh yeah. I agree. And I'm sure they run hot as hell. :)

I have used AMD and Intel and AMD is faster at multitasking by far, even on the Athlon XP machines, with quanitspeed architecture...they can do a lot of processing. I think AMD should be in Macs...not Intel.

Unfortunately AMD is out of the question - they don't have enough production capacity. Apple would be in the same boat and IBM / Moto / freescale - always constrained supply of processors.

I like AMD for desktops, they are better than Intel. However, Intel mobile processors are better than AMD.

Form factor

Who here thinks they will change the pro form factor to plastic?? The reason I say this is because of an observation ive been noticing. Look how the dashboard controll isnt brushed metal, they made itunes not look like brushed metal. They got rid of the metalic ipods so there all now cheaper plastic. The company is clearly trying to make their products cheaper for them to make so they can get a greater return. They even got rid of the that click wheel so they can save money that way. Givin that, I have a feeling they might make the pro models plastic.. if they do ill be P***ed off! What do you guys think?

That's sorta what I'm thinking... It would be awesome if they took all powerbooks, made 128MB GFX cards standard, with 15" and 17" have the option for better ones, possibly 256. Also faster speeds, so maybe 1.7Ghz for the 12", and 2.0Ghz for the 15" and 17"
And that, + what your ideas where, dropping the combo drive and having superdrive for it's price would be ultimate

They'll have better airport reception/range. My Pismo's range is much greater than my PBG4's range. Having said that. The G4 is MUCH sturdier.

I have never used a pbook, but does it have that small white light on the front edge that glows/dims when the lid is closed like iBooks have? If not, maybe Jobs will just add that to the powerbooks since he can't add anything worthwhile without making the pbook a completely safety hazard due to heat. That little light is cute enough...I'm sure we would all be pleased with that being the update. :p

Not exactly like the iBooks. iBooks have a circle of light outside the little thing that you push. PBs have it on the little thing that you push.. It's hot.

Yes, it's in the latch button.

I doubt they'll get rid of the pro metal look. The dashboard does have metal! Click the little cross-shaped button in the lower left corner. The interface in there looks like the front of a G5! The new iTunes isn't brushed metal exactly, but it is metal-colored. Also note that Finder windows, Safari...etc, are brushed metal.

The back is metal.

Or, they are trying to get greater profits through innovation. :D

Uhm. They got rid of the click wheel? I didn't know that. :p

I don't think so. The metallic professional look is what really sets Apple's highend products apart. It just has a certain coolness...

I would be too. Dont worry, it won't happen. :)

That's not quite the case. AMD just opened a new fab in Germany and with that has enough production capacity for around half the present x86 market (200 million). The 5 million + cpu's apple needs they could easily and reliably deliver. This really is first class FUD from the Intel fanbois.

the ibooks have better range for airport. way better than powerbooks. must be the metal casing?

Edit:
...i don't think Intel will just sit around. Intel has a long history of looking at tomorrows competition instead of focusing on the hear and now. In terms of production capacity, AMD is playing catchup. When Intel finishes their new, low nm manufactories, AMD will find themself behind the proverbial 8ball again. SJ, seems to feel the same way and i suspect is behind him prefering Intel's roadmap to AMD's.

Wait, that laptop is called the EUROCOM D900K F-Bomb???

What? Why would you name a computer after a truncated expletive???

Where are you getting that the Rev C iMac Superdrive is any better than the Rev B?

As far as I can tell they are the same:

Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

My Rev B has the exact same specs––8X double-layer, ect.

It's best to be patient and not expect anything in particular. Then we can be surprised on the 19th.

oups, my mistake. i somehow forgot that the rev. b is already double layer.

nevertheless the imac rev. c is amazingly cheap when you take the extras into account.
