It's funny you say that. I was in California a few weeks ago and went into one of their stores. It was at that moment that I realized how boring and stale the Apple Stores have become.

There is another one in The Netherlands, in The hague, really beautiful on the outside too:
I love the use of the matte black in contrast to the white and light birch. It looks sophisticated while retaining and not interfering with the elegance of the architecture.
They want to try a mass looting of an Apple store in Union Square, just let them. The amount of hidden riot gear and security in the part of the City is stunningly effective. I'm sure there are replacement panes of glass in a South San Francisco warehouse in stock just in case something like this happens.

This could also be a subconscious feeling about the products sitting on the tables. I know for me I don't enjoy entering the Apple Stores anymore... they feel boring because the products aren't changing enough. Everyone has an iPhone. iPads.. that's old news. Macbooks... everyone in college has one. No new magic. The company seems to be spending too much time on other tasks.

Do people really get genuinely excited about new store openings? (aside from shareholders of course). It's just a store.

Some of the people on here need to get over it. Apple now is a mass market consumer products company. The days of the whole "Apple store buying experience" and how special you felt for buying an Apple product are long gone.

Electrical codes in San Francisco are very antiquated dealing with electrical wire quality over a 100 years old. Just a few feet below Union Square, construction crews regularly dig up undocumented cables and pipes from ventures of long ago.
From that, there is very strict isolation requirements (for many types of ingresses) including a ban of running wires along stationary structures. I'm surprised they allowed a floor outlet. But then, looking at the coiled cable (to stretch in case of earthquake) and the size of the plug (sure it is water sealed) was required for that configuration in a retail store.
Is MacRumors really run by Google, or are the forums just occupied by a bunch of people in urgent need of enemas? Seriously, on what is allegedly an Apple fan site, an article on the preview of a new SF store immediately yields 75+% negative comments.

Refurbishing architecture is corpulence? Those locations existed before Apple entered them and Apple agrees to fix the existing building. You're on a MacRumors site... everything Apple is gouging it's customers. Stay home.

Really? This is your gripe on a wire under a table? Excuse me why I marvel at the design and overall experience in the store rather than focusing on a wire under a table.
Perhaps there is some value to be found in maintaining the ability to move tables around without the need to pull building and electrical permits.

Important to remember that random photos from non-professional cameras won’t depict the store as nice as it probably is in person. For example, the earlier comment above with photo from fancier-appearing Apple store with spiral glass staircase, that photo was professionally taken. I think the new wood shelves look amazing, and the photo of Ahrendts in front of image that appears to be a new Genius Bar, the wood counters look great. I echo the table wire comment above, it looks sloppy with spiraled cord. Hide it.

There are 5 stores in Minnesota (all within 30 miles of me) but 4 of the 5 are in shopping malls so is suspect they'll be the last ones to get a makeover. Sigh.
There are two main types of Apple stores, those that restore historical buildings and the new ones built from scratch. This only affects the purpose-built stores.
It's called disappointment, disillusionment and plain old fashioned boredom with a stagnant, once buzzing company......
