Honestly it was a joke and a movie reference. He shouldn't be fired for trying to be light-hearted.
Correction: every corporation ever has been like this. The standards just shift over time with culture but there were always things you couldn’t say as a c-suite exec who likely has a moral clause in his contract.Every corporation is like this now. They all have the same, soul sucking, vapid culture. They'll screw you over nothing and then look the other way when something actually bad happens to an employee. Forget seeking employment he should retire or go independent.
The guy was at a car show, NOT at a company event or representing Apple and he was quoting a movie?
I dont get why people give a ****.
And what’s wrong with that exactly? He didn’t say he’s doing it without consent. Maybe he’s even talking about his wife’sSomeone that jokes like this possibly is one that has done this.
And this is Pebble Bach Concourse d’Elegance, not a low rider tailgate bbq at a shuttered Wallmart in Stockton. If you’re going to be saying this s**t, you DON‘T blab it at Pebble Beach. Of course Apple has to stomp on this. Poor decision, bad taste, immature. But funny. It's a dumb thing to say regardless, but I think context is important in this case. However, I get that this is about Apple protecting their brand image.
When I first read the story it did seem like an inappropriate and offensive comment especially for someone in his position, but given the context that he was simply quoting a line from the movie Arthur, I think people are overreacting as they are prone to doing these days. It's apparent to me, he regrets making the joke, and I think his apology is sincere. IMO he should have mentioned he was only quoting Arthur in his apology, perhaps then more people would understand. It's too bad for him and also for apple.jeez can’t even make a joke anymore . This world sucks
He was quoting Arthur staring Dudley Moore, which is widely known to be a comedy, and a highly rated one. So, most likely a joke. I guess we're in a time where few people have seen Arthur. It's possible not many people these days recognized the quote.I don’t think that was a joke. He was just rubbing it in. Looking down on people surrounding you so not much of a joke. There’s a huge difference.
Not to stroke social influencers, but the owner of this TikTok account has 13 million followers, so he's rather influential in the automobile worldWhy would he response to a dumb TikToker?
To be frank, a lot of skillful business people do have loudmouth. But this is so stupid. If somebody approached me asking questions like that, I would either ignore or tell the guy no comment. I mean I'm sure he knew he was being recorded.
I wonder if Apple the one who lost here. Apple is in the middle of a lot of business negoti6, like the TSMC thing.
Moral of the story, don't respond to a random TikToker.
That's quite presumptive of you. IMO there's no way he would have lasted for as long as he did at apple if he made this type of joke at work. He made a mistake by quoting a movie that's old enough most people wouldn't get the reference, then apologized for it.He probably made these type of jokes all the time at Apple.
If this were a woman, everyone would be making excuses for her, and she might get an HR slap on the wrist….tsk tsk tsk.Stupid thing to say while being recorded? YES
Stupid thing to say while being recorded as an employee of Apple? YES
Poor attempt at humor? Depends on what you find funny, it was obviously a play on a line from a movie.
Should someone lose their job over an "in the moment" reaction to having a camera shoved in their face? NO
Cancel culture at work? YES
Is quoting from a popular 1981 starring Dudley Moore as an obvious “none of your business what I really do” joke to a random guy sticking a camera in his face (and who no doubted edited it to portray what he wanted) really controversial? What an idiot. If you’re a person of significance never say something controversial online, in public, or on camera. Keep it neutral. It’s PR 101.
The youth of today would not get that reference. You in fact cannot joke in public, as you will lose your job if your boss dislikes your jokes. Will they also airbrush him out of all old company pictures?
Ha ha ha yeah, that is likely true! That's okay--you got it!The youth of today would not get that reference.
Don’t worry, nobody willNobody better quote anything at all from Blazing Saddles. Or any Mel Brooks movie at all when it comes to it,
Now imagine you were a woman who reports to him, and you saw that. Better yet, imagine it was YOUR boss, and he made a lame joke referencing your ethnic group. Would you feel that negatively affected your work environment?
