Are you even serious? Are you going to pretend that in this day and age you can speak freely just like you did a decade ago? That you can tell a joke and not worry about losing your job? If you claim that the world is just how it always was, that comedy is how it always was, that there is no difference whatsoever, I dont think we have much to debate.

You either know very well were I am getting at, or you are trying to act like a wall in this discussion.
I do speak now the way I did a decade ago, minus a couple of terms I was too juvenile to realise were hurtful to people around me. Why, what was it that you used to love saying back then that you can’t say now?

Are you sad that you can’t be as openly racist or sexist or mysogenistic or homophobic as you used to be? Because that’s about the only thing that’s really changed, and it’s pretty hard to argue that that’s a bad thing from the perspective of a decent human being.

Uhhhhh, political discourse has died. There is no more agree to disagree. There is only Racists/mysogenists/homophobes on one side and Woke/Cancel culture/intolerant "tolerance" on the other. You yourself have shown the gameplan - If someone says something you don't agree with, they AUTOMATICALLY are one or more of Racist/mysogenist/homophobe. You proved the doods point.

No minds will be changed with any of this, so I'm outta here!!

Lol, what a terrible argument to make. One side is saying “hey, maybe we shouldn’t use all there horrible slurs that make people feel bad” and the other is going “no, I need more slurs, let me tattoo them on my forehead so everyone can feel bad” and you think both of those sides are equally valid. Nonsense.

Again, is that what I said? No.

I don’t think he should have lost his job over this, but I also think that as an exec for a multi trillion dollar company, he should have known better than to say stuff like this on camera, joke or not. When you’re a c-level exec with 100+ people reporting to you, [bold]the things you say in your private life can have repercussions in your work life[/bold].

The section in bold is where society has gone wrong with regards to the workplace. Before society became more PC (politically correct) an employee would only get into trouble with their employer if the employee directly involved the name of the company they worked for which the employer felt it was inappropriate to do so, just their association with the company was not enough to get them fired. Employee's should be allowed a private life regardless of what position they hold with their employer and the employer should be backing up their employee if the employee is being badly portrayed in the media.

Peoples attitudes towards others have worsened over the years. They want to see them brought down a peg or two, to be shamed, to be embarassed. Apple should have told Bloomberg and any other media outlet who reported on the story to mind their own business and to leave their employee alone.

Welcome to a more connected world. No one made this guy go talk about anything in TikTok. Keeping your mouth shut is essentially the “back in the day” you’re describing, and it’s still a totally valid option now. People are perfectly within their rights to stop broadcasting their bad opinions and jokes and whatever else they get tempted to put out into the world. That’s why no one ever got cancelled back in the day, no one knew about the awful things they’re said.

Pro tip - if you don’t want backlash for saying something people don’t like, don’t say it on camera. Don’t tweet it. Don’t put it on YouTube. You’re now living the uncancellable lifestyle of your great grandparents. Enjoy.

Beautiful. Now, finally you spread your wings and show your true colors.

How un-racist and unprejudiced of you to paint those adjectives and characterizations about a person you dont even know and can form an opinion about him out of different use of comedy and jokes.

Funny thing how a few posts above you were claiming ignorance on what I was talking about and how you didnt like him to lose his job over a joke!

How virtuous of you, a true white knight! Bravo! Hypocrisy 101.

My response said nothing about slurs, only the lack of discourse. YOU are the one couching the discussion that way.

And yes, there are certainly two sets of rules.
  • ONE SIDE can say the vilest nastiest stuff imaginable, without repercussions
  • The OTHER SIDE is fearful of even bringing up certain subjects for fear of being labeled Racist/mysogenist/homophobe for having an opinion that is not 100% in lock step with the "group think". So best to not even engage IRL.
Since you enjoy this out of whack set of rules, you are fighting like heck to ensure it stays that way.

No where did I ask for the return of the "old ways", but you will label this as my desire to freely say outdated/hateful words.

You didn’t answer the question. What specifically can you not say now that you could say freely a decade ago? I’m not calling you a racist or a mysogenist or angle of those things, I’m saying those are generally the types of things people are not as free to be open about anymore. Please, enlighten me. What can’t you say anymore?

This isn’t all about you, mate. I was talking about slurs. Reading comprehension is a big part of engaging in internet forums, you should try it sometime.

Pretty much.

Can we take a second to talk about how appallingly weak Blevin's "joke" was?

The entire point of the original joke is that Arthur is unemployed - a rich layabout.

The joke completely, totally, embarassingly falls apart when altered to fit a man who has (had, I guess) a job like Blevins.

And - "rich cars"? rich cars. Woof.

How does a successful businessman not know the difference between "rich" and "expensive"?
Watch out guys, the Humor Police is here to deconstruct your jokes.

I am definitely not going to engage in further discussion with you. However for the sake of not walking out without "answering the question", I am just going to give a small example of the overall point of this:

Telling a shocking/silly/whatever joke, doesnt paint you as whatever adjectives you want to throw at someone like you did above.

It is a joke. It is intended as such and you can tell when someone tells a joke to have a laugh, and when he tells it seriously with malicious intend and in order to insult. Someone who makes a joke about X race, doesnt mean he wont say equivalent jokes for Y race. A guy who makes a joke about women, doesnt mean he wont do the same for men. If people cant take a joke and act like it is some form of social terrorism or something then I am sorry it is their problem.

If a joke is all it takes to label someone "sexist!" "bigot!" , and crave to cancel them immediately, then I am sorry, but you(generally speaking) are the biased and prejudiced racist...

This is just a small facet/example of the hypocrisy behind today's world. Fortunately the vast majority of people still use common sense, so there is that.

And with that I am out.

But you can still tell shocking/silly/whatever jokes. No one is stopping you from doing that.

That’s the risk with jokes. If you’re bad at them, people think you’re being serious. Or they don’t get that it’s a joke or a reference because they don’t know you. If you tell a joke so badly that it backfires on you, maybe that’s a little bit your own fault.

If a joke is all it takes to label someone "sexist!" "bigot!" , then I am sorry, but you(generally speaking) are the biased and prejudiced racist...
How does that make you racist? This makes no sense.

This is just a small facet/example of the hypocrisy behind today's world. Fortunately the vast majority of people still use common sense, so there is that.
No, it’s just an example of you thinking you should be able to say and do whatever you want and be free from consequences. If you want to tell a joke, make sure it’s funny. Hell, you can even tell a racist joke, but then it has to be really, really funny. No one is stopping you from doing any of this, and it really hasnt changed. There were always consequences for actions, you’re only just realising that they’re there later in life.

And with that I am out.

Everything has consequences. Jokes aren’t some magical thing that are immune to judgement. If I say something intending it as a joke and you find it offensive, that affects how you perceive me. I didn’t have to tell the joke, that was a gamble on my part and if I told a better joke it might have paid off. Same applies here, except since he’s an exec at a trillion dollar company his joke has consequences bigger consequences than mine. Welcome to life.
Nah, what I see here is the following:
  1. We should be judging people by their sense of humor.
  2. The truth is that his joke was not offensive at all.
  3. The freedom of speech shouldn't be conditioned by the job of the person or his economic status.
  4. His lawyers will surely earn him some millions out of Apple pockets and allow him to retire...with his rich cars, golf course and big boobs wife.
  5. Apple lost one hell of VP which probably saved billions in procurement costs during his career.
  6. Lefties within Apple would continue to cry regardless looking for their next victim.

There's a bit of a tradition with senior Apple execs for being jerks with their Mercs.

This has to be the stupidest decision since John Scully fired Steve Jobs. This man made a joke, it fell flat, you sack a man for the things he does not the things he says. If he was molesting women at work then fine but what they have done is to shoot themselves in the foot. What he said today would have been forgotten tomorrow if they had simply ignored it.

He didn’t lose his job solely on this incident. (High performance execs have a long leash). Someone likely wanted him gone anyway, and this was a convenient cover.

That problem is the people taking such offense over an offhand joke that the incident was reported up the corporate chain.

Man this is just the most tired crap. Dull, dull, dull.

“Cancel culture, virtue signalling, woke snowflakes ruining everything wah wah wah.”

Ugh. Uuuuuughhhhh. Christ.

Not one of these things you are railing about is real.

Yeah, none of these things actually exist, except for the fact that people pushing it through Apple, having it reported in Bloomberg, resulting in a macrumors article about a guy who got canned, in which you are commenting on.

Totally fictitious.

This world no longer gets jokes.. :(. douchey yes, but it was a joke.... brittle... paper thin snowflakes... He should have been fired as an executive you're held to a higher standard... my comments are more about the outrage from the posters in this thread... (I'm female)

That’s literally always happened.

You don’t speak for everyone. What offends others might not offend you.

  1. The freedom of speech shouldn't be conditioned by the job of the person or his economic status.
In principle I agree, but that’s not how the world works.

Maybe, but I doubt it.

  1. Apple lost one hell of VP which probably saved billions in procurement costs during his career.
There are other people who can do this job, I’m sure.

  1. Lefties within Apple would continue to cry regardless looking for their next victim.
This is some grade A paranoia.
