I hate this commercial. I was actually talking to someone about this the other day. They didn't like it either.
Was it because of how ridiculous and unlikely it is?

The guy got instantly approved for a card with a $5,000 limit which means he likely has good credit... a good credit history built up from use of another credit card(s).

Goldman Sachs uses your credit score, your credit report (including your current debt obligations), and the income you report on your application when reviewing your Apple Card application.

I'm suppose to believe that his other credit (or debit) card wasn't already saved in his iPhone's Wallet App yet?

Sometimes when the wallet app is open to use a store card barcode and then tap nothing happens and I have to go to the home screen and then try tapping again and then it comes up.

The whole ad I was wondering what feature they would highlight in this scenario that was unique to Apple Card. Got me good.

In many place, people don't understand they can pre-authenticate. When their turn at the register comes up just tap the terminal. Done in the blink of an eye. Of course, if you don't have your debit card in hand and you have to fumble with your wallet...it's in the same boat.
As an Apple Card user, this frustrates me a little. Why? Cuz I'll double click my watch and swipe the pay station and ding done - in less than a second. A lot of others I see get to the station, wait till it's time to pay, then pull out their phone and start working it.

But ......... people with cards do this too.... they wait till all their groceries are scanned and wait till the cashier is ready to pay before taking out their wallet/purse to pay.

Pre-authentication is a no brainer - near INSTANT payment at gas stations, restaurants, airports, EV pay stations, hotels, grocery stores, target, everywhere that doesn't make you sign a receipt. You don't have to wait till you're there to double tap the power button, select the card you want, and Face-ID THEN place it by the receiver when ready.

I enjoyed the ad. My wife and I share an Apple Card and it's our primary card. We really like it. I prefer using my watch vs my phone tho.

I know I am in a store so my debit card has already been removed from my wallet, is stored safely in my pocket and is removed and tapped in seconds. The worst offenders are women who decide after their many items have been rung through, maybe now I should start to rummage through my handbag to find my wallet, then search for my card and pay. Was it a surprise to them that the payment requirement would appear at the end of their shopping excursion? Stupidity is too common...
Really ticks me off at the gas stations too. Once had a time where I pulled up to a Costco gas station, had my card out already, filled, and drove away before the person behind me had even finished paying. lol. People make their own hell.

Not convincing. Wallet is smaller and thinner but carries multiple forms of payment such as cash plus debit and credit card(s). Doesn't run out of battery, isn't vulnerable to being dropped with cracked screen and cards can get replaced for free vs having to buy a new pricey phone. Silly to risk dropping phone just to pay for candy so it's just a backup payment method.
Been using my phone to pay for stuff since the days of Google Wallet. I understand how people think this way but ... it's really much easier using your watch to pay for stuff. My Apple Wallet carries my vaccination card, hotel cards, museum memberships, restaurant cards, car insurance, starbucks, State Farm, EV charging, AAA, Apple CC, and way too many other of my CCs, and my debit card. All accessible from my phone or watch - with or without an internet connection.

Switched over to using a Ridge wallet to carry only a few necessary cards (drivers license, health insurance, etc).

Watch solves risk of dropping and convenience issues but there's still the battery life issue which is even worse than phone payment. Don't want the hassle of having to charge every day or twice a day. Until that is resolved wallet > phone > watch payment. Another big issue is a lot of small convenience stores don't support phone payment vs cash/card that's 100% reliable.

Maybe it's a Los Angeles thing - most places here didn't take cash for a long time during covid and still discourage it. While I don't live in LA County - my wife works there. Always good to carry around a $20 or two tho.

Whatever works :D

Good thing that was short lived until they figured out gloves/hand sanitizer or not to put hands in mouth after handling money.

Phone payment might work if you never leave the big city since you can just store hop until you find one that works. It's a recipe for getting stranded, though, if you travel through small towns where only cash/card work or go south of the border where you need cash to tip for traffic stop vs consequences.

Apple today shared a new ad focused on the Apple Card, highlighting the convenience of having a card-free payment option and the simple sign up process.
NEW?!?!?!?!

It’s not new ad. It’s been running on TV for while. Apple only made the ad public on YouTube just today.

Personally I use it for almost anything by now since it's more convenient than pulling out a card and entering a pin. Plus I have immediate confirmation and oversight of what I paid where. I still carry my wallet, however, exactly as a backup. If dropping your phone is such a hazard for you I would recommend one of those ruggedized cases.

I got my health insurance into my apple wallet.. the only thing I can't get on there so far is my driver's license, but my state should have those available this year.

I visited the Broad in LA on Saturday and got my ticket in apple wallet there, that was nice.

It's the greatest commercial since the Daisy ad.
Seriously?? Apple is showing us how a guy applied for a credit card and used it with his iPhone to pay. He could have used any card and Apple Pay would have used it — including whatever card he had in the wallet he left at home. So the time he spent applying for an Apple Card was actually time wasted, not saved. If only he'd known to put his card in his iPhone. If only Apple had said something about that. In a commercial, maybe. But no. Apple is so busy whoring for its own services that it neglects to mention its own services, because one makes it more money than the other. In my mind this is one of Apple's worst commercials.

You’re joking, right?
I have never come across a *usable* wallet that’s thinner than any iPhone from the past decade, especially once you fill it with all of your cards and such.
Also, saying “you might drop and crack your phone when paying” is not a reasonable argument.
I could also drop my wallet and have all of its contents spill out everywhere, which would be much more time consuming and insecure to clean up and collect than a cracked screen.
Also, even if you do crack your screen, and even if you do damage the Face ID unit in your phone, that doesn’t change the fact that you can still use your password, or use a Watch which is going to be faster than a Wallet no matter what. A cracked screen doesn’t disable the NFC chip
And finally, I’d rather carry my phone over a wallet filled with cards because if my phone gets stolen or lost, no one can pay for anything with it. You need my face, you need my password, or you need my fingerprint.
It’s not really that secure with a regular card from a wallet. If you’ve got my ID and my credit cards/debit cards, you can go ahead and use them until I call the bank to have it all canceled. not so with a phone.
Obviously I’m not saying that mobile payments are perfect, there’s still plenty of room for improvement and there are still plenty of places without proper implementation
But cracked screens and battery aren’t what’s holding it back.

Wow, you’re like, REALLY upset about this ad and/or Apple Pay. Here, take this doll and point to where the bad Apple Pay touched you.

Or...how about the guy isn't a dillweed and actually pays for the candy bar before opening and eating it. Simple concept. If he had done that, he wouldn't have had to even inconvenience the others in line, or the cashier. Simply realize he doesn't have money, feel stupid, and go home. He also magically has a bag of other groceries at the end...where does that come from?

I'm doing a little bit of assuming here but I'm going to assume he stepped out of line to let others pay while he quickly applied for an Apple Card (I've done this and watched several family members do this, it's pretty fast), and then once he realized he had a means to pay, filled up a grocery bag full of other items.

It's a fun commercial, not meant to be torn apart by people who spend their limited free time trying to find reasons to hate Apple lol (not sayin you're doing this).

I'm surprised it took someone this long to mention that!
