This ad is tantamount to adding insult to injury. I now type my passcode in 20 times a day.

FaceID is so dumb it will recognise me in sunglasses but not with real glasses. Or with real glasses but not without.

And while we're on the subject of design ergonomics, Mr Ive, you do realise that a quarter of the population is myopic, rising to half the population by 2030, so tens/hundreds of millions of people around the world naturally hold the phone close to their face at a distance far shorter than FaceID can accommodate?

I don't care how easy it is; facial recognition on my phone would be far too creepy.
Perhaps TouchID won't return, in which case I don't look forward to the necessity of returning to a PIN or finding a suitable Apple Watch replacement for use with Android.

How is your phone storing a 3D mapping of your face more 'creepy' than your phone storing your fingerprints? For the record, I don't think either of these things are 'creepy' as long as the biometrics are encrypted and never leave the device -- which, according to Apple, is the case.

Stop being a baby about it. Do you never use your phone at home? Do you never try unlocking your phone while you're eating, with it on a table? Faceid is great when you're out doing things sure but when you put your phone down its just a hassle. Ive had the x for a year and the xs max for almost a year. In terms of reliability I prefer Touch ID because I can unlock it in those situations.

Yes to all of those questions. If you have a free hand to put a finger on the home button, you have a free hand to tilt it up and face you for less than a second.

As a human being who has constantly sweat on his hands I would %100 prefer FaceID over Touch. I know it's a problem about my body and myself but more than %50 of time I use my password to open my phone because it doesn't recognize my finger. I cannot wait to have a newer iPhone to try FaceID.

Don't forget you have to hold the phone in front of you, position your face with the phone every.single.time to unlock it with Face ID.
Nope. By the time it is chest high it has recognized my face and unlocked. It is very forgiving of facial expression too. All I have to do is look at it as I bring it up. Way easier and more reliable than TouchID.

TouchID works 99% of the time first try and unlocks instantly.

FaceID works 60% of the time first try, and even when it does work it's still slow compared to TouchID.

Got glasses on? Probably won't work first try.

More than 3 feet from the phone? Probably won't work at all.

Phone sitting flat on your desk next to you? With FaceID you need to pick up the phone and tilt it at your face to unlock. TouchID I can just rest my finger on the sensor for a split second and it's open.

Both have ups and downs, but I really with Apple shipped a phone with both.

I don't think it's a matter of the average iPhone user debating Touch vs Face ID. I think it's more about Apple creating a perceived need as a way to encourage phone upgrades
It's not working, still haven't upgraded.

Too bad Face ID doesn't work when I'm wearing my sunglasses (ie. at least 4 months out of the year), so whenever I'm outside during the daytime and I want to open my phone, I have to pull them off my face every time, open my phone, and then put them back on. I didn't have to go through that BS with Touch ID. Apparently Face ID supposedly works with some sunglasses, but it it sure doesn't with any of mine..

Why is Craig always pronounced "Cregg" in the US? Also why have a silent H in herbs - so it comes out as 'erbs?

Because English is a terrible language, non-phonetic alphabet and tons of silent letters in all versions of it.

Like someone is going to put their iPhone in a vertical position like they show in the ad!
People put their iPhones horizontally, and this is the most significant downside of FaceID.. When I need to unlock my XS MAX when it's on a table, I need to make weird positions so it can recognise me, and many times it fails and I just grab the phone or enter my passcode.
I have an XS MAX and an iPad Pro (2nd gen) which still has the TouchID and I prefer the TouchID anytime any day.

You prefer TouchID because 100% of the time you need to physically activate it, whereas with FaceID, most of the time you can simply look at it??

More importantly, you really need to check out putting your phone in a vertical position as most of the case manufacturers now make cases specifically with a tab in back to hold them vertically because of the demand. It is a game changer to set your iPhone on your desk, nightstand, counter, etc., while you are doing something and be able to simply glance at it and have it auto unlock when you get a message. Imagine, if you will, not having to stop typing, deal with messy hands when cooking, etc. It's a game changer.

You're also missing out because this ad captures exactly what I do when I crash on the couch and don't want to have to get up whena message or notification comes through. On the other end, I set it on a counter and used FaceID repeatedly while working out this morning and never needed to worry about sweaty hands or having to put down weights. Thanks Apple!:)

Especially when you’re eating and your fingers are probably greasy anyway.
Never was a problem for me. I always registered my left pinky finger so that I could still unlock of phone even if I was eating the greasiest of chicken wings.

You need to try the iPad Pro. The fact it recognizes Face ID in both orientation is so much better. Can’t believe they didn’t do it for Xs but pretty sure they would for the next iPhone.

My experience is just the opposite. FaceID works 99% of the time, without glasses, with glasses, or with sunglasses, even when the phone is on the table and I’m looking down at an angle. TouchID worked maybe 50% of the time on my iPhone 7.

And if you are more than 3 feet from the phone, TouchID won’t work, unless you have 4foot long arms.

Touch ID is far easier and More convenient to use. I won’t be purchasing any iPhone until touchid is back
Easy of use depends on the situation. Ever try to unlock when you fingers are wet like after handling a soggy child or while sitting in a hot tub? I was a sceptic until I actually got the XS. Now I'll never go back. I just wish I could teach the phone to recognize my face with my sunglasses.

First commercial I've ever seen from Apple where they compete against their own feature ("Even easier and more secure than Touch ID"). More evidence the slowdown in smartphone upgrade cycles is hurting them.

They've just released a new iPad mini and are still selling the iPhones 7/8 all with TouchID so they can't say anything bad about it.

Easier is subjective, and more secure is a negligible benefit (has a single person on the planet yet been protected by FaceID in a real situation where TouchID would have failed?) so the message is weak IMO.

You are not understanding or what? Do you never have lunch and have your phone on the table

Are you not understanding or are you just being difficult?
Have you never went out for lunch and had your phone on the table and tried to use it? I do this daily. Do you think I should pick up the phone in one hand to unlock it every time I want to use it? Its good most the time but there are situations where touchid just is better in more situations. Faceid is better for when you are focusing 100% on your phone but when you are doing everyday things faceid fails. If you can't see that then I don't know who you are but that's REAL WORLD. How many takes do you think this commercial would of taken in the real world laying on a lounge chair with your face half turned?
