But since you're younger, and therefore more technically savvy than I am, you should be ready and willing and able to do so no problem right? Did you intend to just make my point for me?

It seems like I have produced as many citations as you have, so I'll not be taking on a research paper task for you. Suffice it to say, I believe the tech producers and marketing folks who want to sell to these tech-savvy younger people agree with me, which is why we have seen the drive to simplify and remove friction in tech products. Young people want to USE technology to do things. They do not have "dealing with technology" as a hobby.
Produced citations? Where???

I will repeat what I said. You are pulling these claims out of your ass.

Blogging is an other example. I can (and have) taken photos using my iPad’s camera (when I was with my students on an overseas excursion), then blogged about our experiences using the wordpress app on my ipad 3. It’s a far better experience compared to using my phone because of the larger screen and the longer battery life, and I can do this while on the go, rather than having to wait till I am able to sit down and turn on my laptop (and then still having to hotspot) or back at my hotel room (where I am already dead tired).
I think you are being misleading by deliberately making an implication that all or most bloggers need a camera, much less an iPad camera.

An iPhone + Macbook Air with Airdrop will do a much better job for this use case.

It’s also a lot thinner and lighter than my (then) laptop. So portability, ease of use, battery life.
Funny that the Macbook Air is lighter than the iPad Pro 12.9 + Magic Keyboard combo

It’s always funny how upset certain computer users get when they see people enjoying something they don’t understand. Without a hint of self-realization, these Mac users look down on iPad users the exact same way Windows users did to them and the Mac back in the 90s. ‘Just a toy’
Blame Apple for their misleading advertising on the iPad Pros.

You don't see people putting down the non-pro iPads for not being a laptop replacement after all.

The whole point of the ad is to suggest that people could do the same stuff they do with their complicated business/gaming setup just with an iPad by the pond. It's clearly not about the "many" with "casual needs" but is targeting the ones who (correctly) don't believe an iPad can do everything they need a computer to do.

If that was the point then instead of marking up and drawing on documents with Pencil she would be coding COBOL.

I like the add and it is very catchy. The only bad thing is that coming from the dongle king of the universe, its a bit inaccurate in its portrayal of gadgets, gizmos, and thingamabobs. But I still think its a cool ad.

until Logic, Final Cut, or Xcode shows up on the iPad Pros, the M1 in an iPad is a scam, just like Apple's "you can run your iOS apps on your M1 computer"...

The Mac is the one copying the iPad by using an M1, not the other way around. Remember iPads have been on ARM forever; the Macs just got switched.

You seriously missed the point. They're not doing the same stuff. They're breaking free from the shackles of their serious office work with "real" computers with attached displays/disks/etc doing "real" work and enjoying the nice outdoors doing something fun/relaxing with their iPad - a much more personal and interactive device. Give it a try sometime!

I said I had as many citations as you did. I did not realize when engaging with you that you would have rules for me that you yourself did not feel the need to follow.

Either that or you have failed to understand the conversation to this point.

In any case, I will disengage. Enjoy your day.

I agree totally, but if I were someone who knows little about technology (like most) I would see things like the generic “gamer guy” and not think twice about gaming being different on an iPad. Same for the ethernet cords, probably just think “oh wow they don’t even have WiFi.” - if I’m even aware of what an ethernet cord is.

It is a BS ad, but it works for the target market of everyday user. Though, frankly, I think that target market is changing as younger generations are much more tech savvy. Apple needs to keep in mind the average is no longer clueless person struggling to plug in an HDMI cable.

That take on the youth being “tech savvy” is misplaced. Yes, they *use* technology a lot as end users. But very few of them know much of anything about how any of it works. I saw this in 25 years of an IT career as people like myself, who came up through Amiga and old PCs running DOS and eventually Windows 3, etc, encountered later IT workers who were initially exposed to computers after Windows 98 came out. Those later people had very little understanding of what goes on under the covers and little curiosity to learn it. Heaven help you if they needed to solve something using the command line instead of clicking on things.

If I am on the go and typing/sketching with one hand while holding my device with the other, I don’t want a MacBook Air or 12.9“ iPad with a Magic Keyboard. I want an 11” iPad Pro and no physical keyboard.

I am describing what worked for me then. I was also trying to minimise what I needed to pack in my luggage, opted for my ipad over my laptop, and didn’t feel like I missed it throughout the trip. The main advantage of the ipad here, which I didn’t feel like I could replicate with a laptop, was the ability to hold and use it while on the go.

If I wanted to blog from my phone (the photo part was non-negotiable because the whole point was to let parents know their children were well and enjoying themselves), the act of uploading and posting images to wordpress killed my phone’s battery by noon. It was also easier to navigate wordpress app’s UI on a larger display.

If I wanted to type on my laptop, the form factor meant that there were a lot less situations in which I could comfortably use it. I would have to wait till I was seated down and even then, it’s a lot less comfortable using a laptop on my lap in the tour bus, compared to cradling a tablet on my lap and using it as Steve Jobs intended.

So I guess my point is that what I love about the ipad (and why I have been using it ardently since 2012) is that its form factor does indeed make many tasks easier and more convenient to perform for me. Again, I suppose if one really wanted to be pedantic about it, I could do all this on a laptop, though in reality, the extra friction involved in doing so means I am unlikely to want to use a PC for those tasks unless say, a gun was being held to my head.

And even then, I wonder if I might end up choosing death before dishonour…

I love my Ipads. But they are not laptops, they are not full computers, no matter how more powerful the CPUs are, the iPads OS is just not a computer OS.
Which I can see and understand. There is no shortage of frustration or rants that iPad OS "gimps" the iPad hardware.

No real windows, no real productivity software due to app store, which is not an "applications store". No easy file manager, no easy way to organize thousannds of files and folders. Sorry, it is not designed to be a computer replacement.
No attack on you, I mean, you're just stating reality and facts. But, the we do have this -- A tablet that has real windows, real productivity software, a file manager with an easy way to organize thousands of files and folders. In fact, it's been around for close to 10 years now, the MS Surface Pro.

Opposite of iPad though, the MS Surface Pro just doesn't have the hardware to back up the software.

The M1 iPad is just overkill for that simplistic OS. And I Love my ipads and my iMac and my MacBooks. Is just that Ipad OS is so lacking to be seriously considered as productivity computer. For some things is ok, buT
Mostly just for consumption. Even no calculator default app! ;) IMHO, after using Ipads since the 1st one.
Well, correct me here, but iOS / iPad OS are not at all simplistic technically. In the presentation and operation, though, (by the user) very simplistic. But, that seems to be what sells the iPad.

Yet ... despite the simplistic OS that is so seriously lacking ... the iPad, even the 3 year old 2018 A12x/z, is more of a productivity computer then the Surface Pro, is it not?

Linus Sebastian of Linus Tech Tips seems to think so calling it, "A computer for legitimate Pros." However, in the next sentence shares the frustration that "Apple treats the iPad Pro as a toy for 'children' to watch YouTube and play Cut the Rope"

Apple Makes its BEST Products WORSE on Purpose. Why?

So you didn't ask it, but (for other people to answer, maybe) I have to ask: Why does the Surface Pro, a "legit" computer replacement, still suck so bad after 10 years. Seems like it should have sunk, or at least, _wounded_ the iPad.

My next computer will be a computer.
If you're purchasing it today or tomorrow.... OK. Otherwise, I doubt it ;-) ❤️

Why does the Surface Pro, a "legit" computer replacement, still suck so bad after 10 years. Seems like it should have sunk, or at least, _wounded_ the iPad.
Because as it turns out, people don't actually want a full-blown computer in tablet form.

I believe a lot of it goes back to when many people bought a computer in the last 20 years mostly because they wanted internet access. But they didn’t really want a computer, just the internet, just that there wasn't much of a choice back then because really, what other alternative was there? Which is why I believe the iPad remains very popular for its core functionality (internet access from the comfort of your sofa, without the complexities of a conventional PC).

In an abstract way, it’s like how if you wanted a portrait of your family, You used to either have to paint it yourself or hire an artist. Then photography became a thing, became cheap and accessible, and the painted portrait remains on the fringes.

So when Steve Jobs said the iPad would be the car and the Mac would be the pickup truck, I think he too envisioned a future where it was 90% iOS and 10% OS X (as he called it then). And the thing about vision, which Steve had in spades, is you have to be able to look beyond the present and your current workflows, and realise that tools are always evolving and getting better. So when the iPad was introduced in 2010, I knew without a doubt that this was the future. I also knew it would take a while before the hardware and software got to the point where it really could replace a Mac 90% of the time. I took a leap of faith with the iPad 3 (my first iPad) in 2012, added Macstories to my RSS feed, and I haven't looked back since.

Getting there is only a matter of time. And probably sooner rather than later. And I will say I am about 80% there? My iPad is the one device that is in constant use throughout the day, both for work and leisure, and I don't understand why acknowledging that the iPad is great for consumption (which does form a great part of my workflow as a teacher) is apparently so taboo around here.

Apple didn't sow the confusion. Apple nerds on here and elsewhere on the internet decided to come up with what they considered to be the one and only definition of what a "pro" device is and is supposed to be able to do. The problem is, they didn't consult Apple and let them know that a new definition and purpose had been developed, while still holding Apple accountable.

The "pro" moniker is just that, a moniker. It is no different than iPad Air etc. You don't see people complaining that the iPad Air doesn't float or only use apps dedicated to topics on air. That would be foolish. And yet, that same kind of mentality is embraced with the "pro" moniker.
Wait,

You were the one making claims. The onus is on you to provide proof.

Stop making excuses and admit that you don't have any proof and just making things up.

Why did you quote me? Take a look at the Apple website and ads. I don't believe Apple has ever defined "pro" usage for all, because there is no such thing and never has been, in my opinion.

So many people want iPads to be Macs. These people should try a Surface Pro or any other Windows tablet. Desktop OSes DO NOT WORK on touchscreen devices. (Just as tablet OSes do not work on a desktop or laptop. See Windows 8)

The iPad Pro is the best iPad. But yes, it is still an iPad. Made for iPad based software and usage. With large icons and buttons for easy touch control. Also even the biggest iPad is smaller than a 13" MacBook. MacOS would feel crowded on the display or text / icons would be too small to be used with touch AT ALL.

0.4” (less than half an inch) difference makes it “crowded” compared to the MacBook’s 13.3” display?
