Total friggin' rubbish! Apple has made it clear with their lackluster iPadOS that iPads are for play, not getting work done. They just released another flop of an iPadOS which still has a garbage filing system. They finally make the iPad Pros powerful enough to take on laptops, but they keep the iPadOS as lackluster as they can. It takes three or four times longer to get computer work done on an iPad because the iPadOS fights you ever step of the way! it is too kluge and underpowered and riddled with bugs. Apple proved beyond a shadow of a doubt with iPadOS 15 that they have absolutely NO intention of turning iPad Pros into workhorse laptop killers. They are only interested in selling toys for gaming, video, music, and social media fluff. They gave us a workhorse of an iPad Pro, now they need to give us an iPadOS that can actually use that workhorse for something other than playing.

What exactly is so bad about laptops that they need or deserve to be killed in the first place?

It seems like Apple is trying to sell the iPad as a minimalist elegant solution for getting work done. It just isn't for most productivity applications. iPadOS limitations just makes it unnecessarily cumbersome for even routine office work that often requires juggling multiple documents and applications within the framework of a full file system.

If you want a minimalist solution, get a M1 MacBook Air. A base 12.9 iPad Pro with Apple keyboard and pencil will run you $1,500. You can get an M1 MBA on sale for $900. It is just hard to beat a good reliable laptop for simplicity, productivity, and value.

Don't get me wrong. I think iPads are great. But, I don't see them as a way to simplify my work life. For me, they introduce complications and frustrations to my workflow.

Better than a computer? Where was that claim? What I saw was flexibility for some people whose needs might not be as demanding and serious as yours. Apple provides options for all people.
Do not do that. Unnecessary to cape for Apple when they know they're purposely holding specific areas of their devices back for arbitrary reasons.

I think that the Universal Control gives us a hint at how Apple views the iPad: unless you have very simplistic needs, it's an accessory to a Mac or a consumption device. I don't mean that in a derogatory way - some people do just need to do basic tasks.

The frustration is always with just a few tweaks it could be the only "computer" a lot more people need. But does Apple think that is in its best interest???
Issue is Apple always think they know what's best for people. Sometimes they're right on the mark and they're good at it. Other times they cave because they know they were wrong.

Always remember, iPad was never even supposed to have something as simple as a stylus/pencil. Was supposed to be fingers only. Now we have a pencil/stylus, keyboard, mouse support, and trackpad.

What a timely commercial for me. My Mac mini (I'm pretty sure) died a couple of days ago and it's really thrown me off. I didn't realize how often I went to it. But maybe it's more out of habit than necessity? Checking news in the morning, doing some light work from home, typing up on MacRumors, stuff like that. Casual gaming every now and then but my iPhone has more gaming power than that mini.

Now I'm considering what to replace it with. 5 years ago it would've been a MacBook. But now? Can I get by with just an iPad? I've never owned one. Maybe it's because I'm getting older but part of me wants to keep everything as light as possible. If I can do everything I need with an iPad or MBA, why get a MBP or iMac? The other part says get a MBP and not worry about if you can do something or not.

My mom has a 2010 MBP she's not using (I got her an iPad Air recently) so I can borrow that.

After watching this commercial several times I am reminded of why I switched to a Mac. I don't have to deal with all these OS settings. I don't have to worry about finding a BT adaptor that'll work with my BT mouse and keyboard. I don't have to worry if my GPU is compatible with the motherboard and if it'll fit my needs. Which CPU should I get? But I don't know if an iPad can fill my needs.

Maybe I can pick up an iPad Air now and, in a few months, realize I need more, and get an iMac or MBP? I've never been able to convince myself to buy an iPad to fill that void between Mac and iPhone.

I think a lot of Apple users (outside of this nerd forum) use the iPad for basic tasks like email, web browsing, Pages, Numbers or Office. As such, the iPad is their computer as it meets their current need. For many here, that isn't possible as the need is much different. The good news is Apple has built Macs to help bridge the gap, so that those who like and use the iPad a lot, can also use a Mac or Windows computer in the gap.

There is nothing wrong with calling the iPad a computer. It is a computer. It just may not be the computer for you.

An iPad serves the "computer needs" for 90% of the people, add kbd and tarckpad and get it even higher.

Those few that use "pro" apps (wether by Apple or 3rd party) would most likely continue to use them primarily on desktop/laptop even if the were available on the iPad.

-> still plenty space for whining about stuff noone was ever promised

Sorry. Maybe I am old-fashioned, but I am faster at doing work without taking my hands off the keyboard. I can do tasks like edit photos and videos with a mouse and keyboard faster than tapping on the screen. And I can work a spreadsheet better with a keyboard. Even with a keyboard on my iPad Pro, I find it better at consuming media of all sorts than creating it.

until Logic, Final Cut, or Xcode shows up on the iPad Pros, the M1 in an iPad is a scam, just like Apple's "you can run your iOS apps on your M1 computer"...

I mean really, what BS. A clear 'gamer guy' type setup suggesting an iPad can replace that. General office people who would not be using Macs anyway will not be able to use just an iPad. All the sheep will be along to laud it but really is a BS ad.
I agree totally, but if I were someone who knows little about technology (like most) I would see things like the generic “gamer guy” and not think twice about gaming being different on an iPad. Same for the ethernet cords, probably just think “oh wow they don’t even have WiFi.” - if I’m even aware of what an ethernet cord is.

It is a BS ad, but it works for the target market of everyday user. Though, frankly, I think that target market is changing as younger generations are much more tech savvy. Apple needs to keep in mind the average is no longer clueless person struggling to plug in an HDMI cable.

LMAO a base M1 Macbook Air 256GB is cheaper than a M1 iPad Pro 12.9 128GB + Magic Keyboard + Apple Pencil combined.

For 90% of the people, the Macbook Air is the device to get. No need to deal with accessories, a true all-in-one solution.
