I normally like Apple ads, and I adore my new iPad pro (got the 512gig 12.9" 2021), but that ad was horrifyingly bad. I like Disney songs for the most part, but I'd rather hear nails go across a blackboard than listen to a repeat.
They should have had the cast from "Hamilton" do the ad :)

IPad has numerous advantages over regular PC or laptop, everything depends on individual needs. Nice add.

What exactly is so bad about laptops that they need or deserve to be killed in the first place?

Laptops were too good of an idea. They provide amazing productivity and portability but established market presence before Apple was in a position to lock them down so 30% of all 3rd party revenue goes through them like with iPads.

If Tim Cook had a time machine he'd terminate the first laptop designers.

If people don't have what you want them to have make them believe they really need it.
Show this to them and they will believe it.

Apple should just embrace that the iPad is just for fun or light computing, I have no idea what the “Pro” is for.

Pro stands for prosumer which is a type of consumer who feels more rewarded the more they spend and the newer the product.

Mini stands for ministrant, from the Latin ministrans, and refers to a consumer who waits for a product that best suits their needs.

The "Pro" moniker is just a marketing designation to differentiate it from the other iPads.

Usually the only place you see complaining about something that doesn't really exists "pro" wise is here on MR. A lot of people have defined a tool that Apple never designated as such, and then those same people get mad at Apple for not living up to the magically created status label.

They feature someone struggling with the power cable when they just released the iMac that has ethernet in the power supply.

A computer (to me) has a real filesystem, swap / pagefile memory, multiple user accounts, app installs not locked down to the mfg's app store....

I think what Apple is asserting and the rest of the world is figuring out, is that the market of people who disagree with you is 100 times bigger than the market of people of agree with you.

Also, your expertise in that definition of a real computer, despite what you may think, carries very little weight when it comes to the 100x larger market's buying decisions.

I see that you are saying that Apple is trying to sell computers to a wide audience, and since you have spent a large part of your life engaged with computers that you should be some kind of authority to the wide audience on what computers are.

This is a tempting but ultimately false conclusion (my time has come!). Look at comic book movies, anime, dungeons and dragons, and video games: the true believers who kept the lights on before things went mainstream did not become the leaders of the movement.

Same is happening here.

Apple is saying the iPad is not a computer? That's for damn sure and exactly why everyone still needs a computer!

I wonder if the second part of your statement is still true. What does everyone need a computer for that does something an iPad doesn't do?

I think most people know that. What some people fail to realize, is others' computing needs aren't as demanding as their own. Or as demanding for tech people who hang out on tech forums, which is not Apple's largest customer demographic.

For many, a portable tablet with basic web browsing, email, messages, note-taking, light sketching/drawing, writing, etc is ideal.

There's a reason Apple dominates the tablet market, both in number of units sold and revenue. It's about understanding not everyone is into tech and many only need a great tablet with a great/responsive display for their casual needs. And... that some people who are into tech and have multiple regular computers, sometimes just want to *consume* with a tablet.
That's a pretty good come-back! 🤓 I have owned a few iPads, and I tried the 2020 - 12.9, but it was too lackluster for my taste. I was surprised that many software titles were still formatted for the iPhone and wouldn't even work on the iPad. I also wrongly assumed that the OS had matured enough that written text conversion to type text would be universal throughout the OS and apps. Maybe iOS 15 for the iPad will allow for more functionality, but I doubt it. After all, I've never seen an iPad demonstration for anything other than drawing or watching a video.

I can see both sides of the argument here. On the one hand, I love my iPad Pro 11“ (it’s my favorite computer), and I also really like this TV commercial, because it shows the iPad’s distinct advantages around mobility and ease of use.

On the other hand, Apple is clearly moving too slowly in improving iPadOS, especially around basic features like full external monitor support (without letterboxing), and a number of other areas.

They should do a Little Shop of Horrors one next … Somewhere That’s Green

Sorry this is so obscure, Alan Menken and Howard Ashman worked on Little Shop of Horrors before Little Mermaid and realised they wrote a very melodically similar song for the Disney fish girl, even jokingly calling it "Somewhere that's Dry" *

While I love my 2018 Pro, an iPad is not a computer. If it were I could leave my M1 MBA at home instead of needing both when I travel for work. I was really, really hoping the M1 Pro would get MacOS so I could finally have that one device that did everything, but no, apparently that goes against Apple's business model and ironically directly contradicts this ad campaign.
