Could we, some how, intelligently, separate the conversation between lens flare and the PURPLE issue?

No one is complaining about lens flare for crying out! It's the PURPLE!

The two are the SAME thing. In a larger camera with a multi-element zoom lens with air aspace between the elements the "flat" has the next glass element. and you see a lighter circle. But in a tine cell phone lens the light hits the side and is scattered back.

It is purple for the same reason we see a rainbow of colors if light goes through a glass prism (or rain drops). Notice that on a rainbow the color purple is to one far edge. That is what is happening here the stray light is being split up the purple part reflects off the edges and defuses into the image.

The normal way that photographers have "fixed" this problem is by shading the lens with a hand, hat or a sheet of cardboard. What you do is look at the front of the camra an place the shadow cast by your shade such tat it covers the lens.

Larger camera can have a built-in lens shade, or place the lens inside a deep depression but cell phone cameras are to thin for that

There is a basic rule of thumb that says "bigger cameras are always better." If you care a lot about image quality buy the largest camera you are willing to cary.

In any case the purple is in face "flair" and you can fix it by shading the lens such that it is in the shadow.

Can't believe ppl complained about this. What do you expect. Just google pictures of sun if u want cool pics of the sun..

There enjoy.. Bet that was not taken with a iPhone..

Yeah, I have stand alone camera's that have weird colors in the pics at times.

Then why is every tech website and news forum making it seem like it is an issue unique only to iphones? More specifically, the iphone5? To troll noobs like me?

Because Apple gets page hits, Apple having a flaw gets even more, Apple having an 'unique' flaw is like winning the lotto.

And all those sites really care about is hits. Not telling the truth, the whole truth etc

MVRL - interesting. I wonder where it is picking up the colour, from the lens itself or some sort of internal reflection from a component which is differently coloured in some iPhone 5s.

Most likely it is from a combination of the wavelengths of the light and the angles it is reflecting inside the camera itself. Not to mention the low light improvements in the iPhone 5 camera could be more sensitive to certain wave lengths.

Folks are forgetting that the camera in the iPhone 5 is completely different than the previous cameras and that can make a huge difference.

I had to work bloody hard to get this purple flare. I got it really strong once and utterly failed to get it again when I tried to closer match the angle of the two photos without it. All from the same phone within seconds of each other.

I will say that I tried to replicate with the iPhone 4 - and I could see definite purpleness, but much much more subtle. So much that it isn't worth noting. On the flip side, the 4's pictures were much darker than the 5's - much less detail. The purpleness might have come out more with photoshop balancing the levels. Who knows.

All I can say is that this issue just isn't. You have to try for the purple, and it's much much easier to not get it. It's an issue blown out of proportion by people intent on slinging muck.

I have 780 photos on my photo stream at the moment, many back lit, lots of lens flare etc. none of them show this distinctive purple flare, and I am unable to replicate it with my 4s.

Here you go.

This is in spit of the assertions i keep seeing on here that ugly purple flare is a fact of life and unavoidable.

Nobody has said it's unavoidable. People have said it will happen with any lens/camera given the right conditions, but it's *easily* avoidable. Simply angle your camera differently in relation to the bright light source. (Just like Apple, and *numerous* pro photographers all over the web have advised.)

I assume you aren't comparing to a $5,000 camera like that other guy did here. You also didn't check the review, I'll give you the link this time to make it easy for you.

They compare the 4s to the 5 and explain the phenomena in cameras of that size.

And they also say it is slightly more pronounced on the iPhone 5. And I'm sure Apple wouldn't have made an announcement if it wasn't getting an enormous amount of complaints.

Between this and antenna gate I'm really beginning to believe the people that declare Apple users to be complete idiots.

Not really. Most of the people riding this particular meme across the internet don't own an iPhone, or any Apple product. In that way, though, it *is* very much like 'Antenna-gate'.

His comments here already amazed me plen+y :D I actually took the time and looked him up, which I now regret.. All I saw were some rubbish, generic, pretentious shots that average casual photographers post on deviant art every single day. If you'd truly like to be inspired, look up Ninagawa Mika and Heidi Slimane.

sincerely,

And what have YOU done. And by you I mean literally you, not the almost 200 years dead guy you are name dropping to, I suppose, sound more informed. Lets see your non rubbish, non generic, non pretentious professional work. Or are you one of those 'those who can't, degrade' types

Oh and your two inspirations. Pretentious, not exceedingly creative and loves Photoshop way too much come to mind. So I can't see how they are any better than the guy you dissed as crap.

The horrible purple flares of a pro DSLR.

Yes, because the light source there is *plainly* just on the edge of the frame.

Seriously. If you can't even understand the basic scenario under which issue occurs, why bother to post at all? Do you *enjoy* demonstrating your arrogance and ignorance all in one short post?

You are absolutely right. Good to know the 4s is better since i need a new phone pretty soon.

When the pictures are framed the same way, the 4s is about the same. Sadly, in most of the 'example' pictures, showing how 'bad' the iPhone 5 is, the 'photographer' doesn't bother to composite the picture the same way.

And they also say it is slightly more pronounced on the iPhone 5. And I'm sure Apple wouldn't have made an announcement if it wasn't getting an enormous amount of complaints.

Slightly. It wasn't a problem before anyone noticed apparently, 4s took photos for people without issues. These are normal artifacts for cameras of this size. It seems like you are grasping for straws here.

This is Apple at its worst. And it saddens me. Tim cares about money, not the greatest products in the world. Apple engineers knew about the problem, and still shipped the phone. Now the phone have a manufacturing defect, and Apple wont recognise it because they would loose billions of dollars.

This is exactly what happened last time Jobs quit. Maximising profits and care less about excellent in products. And as soon products are not the best in the world, its not interesting for people to pay premium Apple prices.

I happily pay 50% more for an excellent product.

Apple tries to tell us that there is no problem. This is normal. I have tested with my Iphone5, 4S, Windows Phone7 and a cheap mini camera. iPhone5 is by far the worst camera purple flair.

Technically there can be a couple of different reasons for this.
1) The new lens cover
2) That FoxConn/Apple have forgotten to paint the lens with anti glare paint.
3) Software error SIMD/A6 image processor instruction.

1 is highly unlikely. 3 is the easiest to fix. 2 is the most obvious reason.

If Apple have any moral left, they should recall the phones and make a working camera. To avoid the Purple flair people just need a small lens cover. Something that case makers can do. (I will laugh if Apple makes one Anti Purple Flair cover and charges 40 dollars for it).

I had a look at some of the example pictures posted online (like the one below), and yeah, it does appear to go beyond normal lens flare. It blasts your picture with magenta, and good luck trying to remove it in Photoshop etc. Prince should love it though.

Ahh, those three pictures again. Look closely at them (hell, give them a passing glance), and you can tell they aren't framed the same way.

Since the angle of the incoming light, relative the lens assembly, is one of the most important factors in determining whether or not this happens (other factors include focus, aperture and ISO settings), failure to frame the shots the same way simply means that these are not good examples for purposes of this discussion.

If the photographer had shot the iPhone 5 picture at the same angle as *either* of the other two, it's very likely that it would have had a plain, white lens flair instead of having the purple one caused by chromatic aberration due to the angle of the bright light source.

Thank you for your link, but that wasn't taken with MY 4s was it?

I posted examples of pics I've taken with my 4s which show lens flare,, but they are either pure white or show a rainbow prism effect. My 4s seems unable to replicate the PURPLE flair that seems to affect some i5s and some i4s.

I am interested in why mine doesn't appear to suffer from it, and instead gives a far more pleasing flare.. If we understand why there is a difference (if indeed there is) we will know whether it would be a simple matter for Apple to manufacture phones that only give a more pleasing, neutral lens flare. This seems like something they should aim for, I can't understand why some people seem so content with such an ugly example of flare if it could look better!
