Can I take this opportunity to ask, is there a good reliable RSS feed of Apple software releases? Just a raw RSS feed? I’ve asked this before and looked around and can’t seem to find it anywhere. There are lots of sites that announce it but I can’t find just a clean feed of releases of each OS.

Three hours after releasing the second betas of iOS 17.3 and iPadOS 17.3, Apple has pulled the updates from the Developer Center and over the air, meaning they are no longer available to download and install.

iOS-17.3-Buggy-Feature.jpg

Apple has removed the iOS 17.3 and iPadOS 17.3 betas after a number of people reported that the software is bricking devices. According to reports on the MacRumors forums, Twitter, and Mastodon, some iPhone owners who updated found their devices stuck in a boot loop.

The only fix to the issue appears to be restoring a stuck device, which is why Apple has pulled the update. Once the bug is addressed, Apple will re-release the beta.

There are reports that suggest the iOS 17.3 boot loop bug could be related to the Back Tap setting. A log shared by developer Guilherme Rambo indicates that a Back Tap setting caused his device to crash, and there have been several other affected users who have Back Tap enabled in some capacity.

Some others who had Back Tap enabled were able to install the update, and others who did not have the feature on had the booting issue, so it is not entirely clear how Back Tap is involved.

I have backtap enabled - 3 taps for rotation lock.

The beta installed fine for me on my iPhone 14 Pro. This is a weird one, but I don’t think it’s related to back tap.

Lots of people who had it off are saying they didn't have an issue. But it would be more interesting to hear if anyone who had Back Tap off did have a problem. I'm one of the folks, like you, who had it on and did not have an issue.

Same for me. I have it on (double checked in settings) and have not had any issues since I updated earlier. 15 Pro Max. I only learned there was an issue with the release when I checked MR.

We are all beta testers with iOS.

iOS 17.2.1 is just as great 😅

Come on Apple! Let the programmers have their Holidays! This would not have happened if they waited a week! lol

What a great way to learn that there is a handy feature called 'Back Tap'! 🤓

What I find interesting is the models that this issue affects
I know people who were having every issue possible on 13, 13 Mini, 14 Pro, etc yet here I am on 13 Pro with no issues

You mean a shell of the company who released Mac OS X snow leopard with a bug that would erase an entire user’s home folder without warning?
Or how about a shell of the company that pulled a golden master of iOS 4.2 for totally disabling the Wi-Fi capabilities of the iPhone 4?
Or how about a shell of the company that released a version of iOS 8 that disabled cellular data and Touch ID?
Honestly I find these bugs (inclusive of this one, which is on a beta of course) less annoying because they affect a minority of users than the ones that a consistently run into which often seem like UI oversights and lack of testing different software use cases.

mine bricked. i had to do a restore. and then skipped restoring info, did the update again and then am now restoring my data.

Actually, it's more like an alpha. Beta releases should already be tested well enough that they don't brick significant numbers of devices. Unless you are 2024 Apple and growing sloppier.

I gave a 👎 because we need to appreciate that the software is getting more complex with each release. That makes it harder for every feature to continue working correctly. It's a constant cat-and-mouse game.

I agree that this issue should've been caught with unit testing, but a unit test is not created until it's needed. Now one is needed for Back-Tap.

What was not made clear is this is a Developer Beta, not a Public Beta.

Developer Beta testing is designed to catch these issues. Nobody should be running to install these early betas on all of their devices.
