Apple Pulls iPadOS 18 for M4 iPad Pro After Bricking Complaints [Updated]

Apple stopped signing the iPadOS 18 update for the M4 iPad Pro models, which means the new software is no longer available to be downloaded and installed at the current time.

The update appears to have been pulled following complaints from some iPad Pro owners, who found that the update bricked their devices.

There are reports on Reddit from iPad Pro users who had an interruption in the installation process, leading to an iPad that refused to turn on. A total replacement was required for affected users.

Not all M4 iPad Pro owners have had an issue installing the update, and it could be linked to installing the new iOS 17.7 update before installing iOS 18. Apple will make the software available again when the underlying problem has been addressed.

Update: Apple has provided MacRumors with the following statement: "We have temporarily removed the iPadOS 18 update for M4 iPad Pro models as we work to resolve an issue that is impacting a small number of devices."

Seems egregious after all the beta testing they do. When Apple falls it falls hard. I had an iMac that was bricked in 2007, brand new, I did update and lost display. It sat a month or so until Apple came up with a fix. It happens.

This did impact me - iPad Pro 11 512 M4 WiFi. Apple said they will replace mine once they get it in stock. Looking on Reddit thread it might be a batch of units that are impacted hence not everybody has had the issue.

So there is an issue for some but certainly not all

Just re-read. I did update 17.7 on iPhone before iOS 18 and I did plan do that on iPad but decided to go straight to iOS 18 instead. Lucky.

I upgraded my M4 last night without incident. The only problem I’ve encountered is with whatever the feature is called where you slide over from the left edge on the first page and it shows widgets. Editing that has locked up and not worked correctly.

I had stopped updating immediately because Apple OS updates have gotten so unreliable. I can forgive it when it happens to an older device. But when it happens to your highest priced tablet that’s just embarrassing. I think I’m going back to waiting several weeks and letting other people be the guinea pig.

Its not only ipadOS, ios 18 is also affected, same behaviour (CLEAN INSTALLS not updates OTA) at least in my case.

BTW the above photo is an iphone SE (2020) (for those who think it is 10 years old).
