Apple Pushes iCloud Photo Library Back to Beta as SMS Continuity Delayed to October

Lol paying with an iPad Air would look so awkward but hey why not throw that feature in?! I'll take it. :p

iOS 8.1 will be available across all iOS devices bruh....

Take a look at the website - Apple Pay is coming in October, with a software update Tim Cook said in the keynote.

Apple Pay will be part of that 8.1 upgrade. That being said, I think a majority of major 8.1 features will serve to set the iPad apart though. I could be wrong.

We'll see the new iPads come with iOS 8.1 in October:

-Split Screen Multitasking (and perhaps some additional iPad specific iOS features?)
-Apple Pay
-Continuity and Handoff features

I'm convinced that given Tim Cook's cryptic comments about there being a lot more they can do with the iPad and the fact that the 6+ has essentially become an iPad mini mini, I think we'll see some iPad specific stuff launch in October with 8.1 and the new iPads.

I really can't see a .1 update coming after one month. It will probably be 8.0.2 or 8.0.3. But you're right about the iPads.

lol, 8.1 will not be out in October. It'll be 8.0.1 or 8.0.2.

That's what I miss - camera roll!
I do like that all my photos are together on the "summary" view or whatever it is, but I'd like to see what's on my camera roll so I can delete stuff off it.
"Recently Added" doesn't specify, that I can see. And it's all over the place, not in order.

"Photo stream" has gone too (as a separate album). They're mixed in with camera roll on the summary tab.

As for iCloud photo library, I see the (beta) option but don't intend in using it, so not going to switch on to see if it works.

I just want to get to a point where photos in my PhotoStream (right now) aren't using up storage space....

Especially considering I use one iPhone as my main camera so all those photos in the PS are already on that iPhone.....therefore its hitting my storage twice.

I assume iCloud Photos is the way they will streamline the whole deal across all devices. PhotoStreams, while extremely useful for sharing, have been messy from the start.

I don't see Apple Pay coming in a .0.X update.....As a matter of fact, I think 8.0.1 is already about ready for release - I think we'll see it Wednesday right after 8.0 just like last year.

Most devices will probably ship with 8.0.1.

Perhaps - I just find it hard to believe something like Apple Pay and some iPad specific features could come over in a small point release.

It does appear the quickest Apple has turned around a X.1 update is roughly 4 months....

They never got photostreams to work reliably. Probably they found too many bugs and realized people are fed up with apple's unreliable cloud services. So if it means everything will work fine later on, I'm not complaining.

Also, they might want to release it together with the new photo app on Yosemite. It was always unclear to me how they would deal with sync in that in between period.

The answer to this is very simple. Apple does not want to dedicate engineering resources to updating iPhoto on the Mac. Instead they are focusing their resources on finishing Yosemite and the new Photos app.

The SMS just suddenly stopped working with the latest developer release of Yosemite for me. The Messages app on my mac wants to send everyone iMessages, so for SMS threads the contact name is highlighted in red with an error saying no iMessage account found.

iCloud drive requires Yosemite, and if you activate it on your iDevice it warns you that any computer running anything lower than Yosemite wont have access to iCloud-stored numbers and pages documents. So on wednesday when iOS8 goes live, everyone will lose cloud access to numbers and pages until yosemite releases? that doesnt sound good.

Ah I assumed it was already smart about it, because I don't see two copies in iOS 8 for stuff that's on my camera roll and on photo stream. I think that was the same on iOS 7, didn't see duplicates so assumed the photo stream photo was really just showing the local camera roll photo if it still existed, but downloaded it if it didn't exist.

I know. I still have no idea where it was coined.

on reddit.

i think/hope that when the investigation gives results a bunch of arrests will be made and the deepweb ring of collectors will be dissolved, bringing to light this was not icloud specific, but a wide effort to hack into any and all celebrity's accounts. iCloud is a popular feature, it's not a surprise a lot of celebrities use it.

Ofcourse the changes made in the login process were overdue and a mistake on apple's part, i'm glad they fixed that.

Fortherest: two factor auth should be mandatory.

i compared storage, and it seems you're right..

Though iCloud Photo Library was available during the iOS 8 beta testing period, Apple appears to have demoted it to beta status and removed it from the iOS 8 golden master, the software that will be distributed to the public next week.

I have the GM installed and I still have the iCloud photo library.

Functionality may continue to exist in developer builds for testing.

There was a rumor a few days ago that Apple was seeding 8.0.1 to the carriers for testing. My guess is that what we believe to be the GM and the build that the new phones will arrive with are in-fact tweaked to disable these features.

After seeing the quad split on the Samsung tablet (whatever the largest size is called), I really hope Apple will not go that route. The Samsung tablet is larger than the iPad yet once its split, all the useable space is way too small for each section.

Also it was awfully laggy

I wonder where are all the people that said that after iOS7 iPhones would never sell well again.

too busy complaining that iOS 8 is horrible

I personally don't see much use in it....but there are many who do.

I do hope that other posters here are correct in that this will all get resolved when yosemite rolls out. One of the huge advantages left for Apple is the intgration and Continuity is a big part of that strategy. I can hold out for Yosemite since we are talking another month. But to put this all the way out to the rollout of the new photos app -- well that would be really bad.
