It makes sense to move SMS Relay to coincide with the release of Yosemite, since the two are required for that feature to function. To promote iOS as having that feature, but not have Yosemite available for the general public would only create unnecessary confusion.

That's not true. SMS relay will work with the iPad, too. In fact, I was using it in earlier betas.

That's pretty much the whole reason I upgraded my iCloud Drive to 200GB the other day. Thanks Apple!

They also cut Shazam integration with Siri... That was one amazing feature.

Apple Pushes iCloud Photo Library Back to Beta as SMS Continuity Delayed to O...

It's still there. Changed in Beta 4. You just have to activate Siri and say "Shazam". All they've done is changed it from doing it as soon as Siri is activated. Some people were complaining that they had music playing and Siri kept shazam-ing the music when it wasn't wanted.

Edit: hmm apologies, seems like they did pull it out of GM! Damn.

Or, for iCloud Photos, when the new Photos app launches next year.

This is my guess. I wondered the whole time how they would make iCloud Photos work well without the companion app for Macs.

Would it just merge with Photostream in the meantime? If not, how would I view the photos outside of iOS? And on that note, how would old photos get uploaded, and would it affect syncing with iPhoto?

I'm very excited about the changes coming with iCloud Photos, but I'm surprised they announced that it was coming at all before the Mac solution was worked out. It just seems like you've got to have all the devices on the same page before this system is going to work well.

And speaking of working well, I really hope they have a robust way of making offline archives on the Mac, given that we've seen in the past that things can at times get lost in the cloud. It'd be great to have both, and have the Mac version of the library fully compatible with Time Machine backups.

You've gotta be pretty dumb to allow your naughty bits (and those of others) to be backed up in the cloud. It was only a matter of time before that story fappened.

ummm i know why

Still too hot on the heels of the celebrity leak. "all of your pictures, everywhere, forever " doesn't sound great right now to some of the public. frankly I am very much looking forward to the new photos app and iCloud photo library

Anyone not on Yosemite will be able to access iCloud Drive via iCloud.com

I thought it had already been said it wasn't all iCloud? Some of the celebs didn't even have an iPhone. Also they were gathered over a few years, rather than one big smash and grab. Mostly down to weak passwords/security questions.

It was; no one listened tho :/

Since I was only going to use it with Yosemite it makes no difference to me if it's delayed until October. I'm guessing those who have iPads maybe a little miffed though.

It's too bad that most folks' network connections are still 1–2 orders of magnitude too slow for online photo albums to work well without massive downscaling. Here's hoping this beta pushes Apple to "pull a Google" and start buying up wireless bandwidth and dark fiber.

Well, this is mildly disappointing. I was looking forward to using iCloud Photo Library to leverage upgrading myself to the iPhone Plus 16GB instead of the 64GB iPhone 6 (I know, wtf why?! I had a long discussion about this with my good homie yesterday and we both arrived at this conclusion since we stream everything with an unlimited plan). Hopefully it'll be ready when I'm ready to get my iPhone Plus.

Are we sure this is how it works? I was under the impression before that all of my photos on iCloud would not take up space on my devices but they do anyway leaving me not to upload all of them because of my 16 GB iPad.

Do we know when iCloud Photo Library works it actually will not eat device storage? A poster above said even with it turned off on their beta it still took up a gig...

It does keep a copy of your photos for storage but, Your photos still take up storage on your device, all I cloud photo does is keeps them in sync basically. If you delete a photo on your phone it deletes it across the board (in the cloud too) on all device, if you take a photo on your iPad it will show up on your phone. The only way to limit the amount of storage your photos take up is by enabling a feature that "Optimizes for phone storage" or Keep and Download originals" the optimize keeps a low res. photo on your device but the original stays on the cloud freeing up space on your device. It reduced my wife's photo storage by 3GB on her devices enabling that feature.
I personally could careless about the storage amount on the device I am happy Apple finally has my photos truly in sync between all my devices.

I'm a massive Apple fan boy and defend about everything they do, but not having brute force password protection in 2014 on anything let alone cloud service is beyond negligent. Let alone not having notifications for two step authorization.

Thanks for the advice. I was unaware of those options. I will have to look them up. I was hoping the new service would allow them to all be accessed via the cloud so I could store tens of thousands of photos in the Photos app.

That maybe an option when Apple finally releases the new photos app for OS X next yr. very disappointed in the fact that all these releases are so spread out. The OS X photos app should be the very first thing Apple released, not the last.

Been using SMS and calling between my iPhone 5S and iPad Air for a couple of days now. Been 100% reliable on the 20 or so SMS and 6 voice calls (using the Air as a phone so the 6plus doesn't feel too big ;)

Typical. They go for the click bait these days. That is all that matters

With iCloud Photo Library you can either have original pictures on the device or have optimised versions (smaller size). It gives you the choice in options.

Also, since iCloud Drive is now accessible on iCloud.com beta, I wouldn't be surprised if iCloud Photo Library will end up there too.

Sending/receiving SMS on Yosemite stopped working for me about 3-4 days ago. Could it be because of the situation mentioned in this post?

iCloud, you're never without your camera, but you're definitely without storage space :apple:

SMS Continuity has had some strange issues for me - some of the people I send SMS messages to, during the beta period, received messages that contained nothing but Webdings! Send the same message from the iPhone - goes through just fine.

I can understand delaying continuity since Yosemite isn't out yet.
Shazam is a bummer but I can imagine it being annoying if it works so well it can identify the song in the background and all you wanted to do is setup a reminder.

They changed how it worked in beta 4 & 5, by having to say 'Siri, shazam', obviously to stop the accidental shazams , but now that just opens the app. Wonder why they've dropped it.
