This rumor was always ********. The iPad 2 is destroying the competition. Why release an update the same year?

Now, if Android/Playbook/WebOS was gaining ANY traction in the tablet space, I would see a possibility for Apple to push a release for Holiday 2011 so that the iPad 2 didn't seem stale in comparison (to holiday shoppers). But since those are all pretty much DOA, and the iPad 2 is still selling like gangbusters, there's really only one tablet choice for Holiday 2011. Apple can afford to wait until March.

Ok, guess my hopes on a retina-Xmas are gone this year. :(

So I will now change my mind ... Processing ... Mind successfully updated, please reboot.

I always told you there is no iPad 3 in 2011

He has a decent track record. His sources are hit or miss. Sometimes he says things outright. Other times he couches his rumor "predictions" in speculation.

Analysts and others with shadowy "sources" do what they always do. Take a rumor and run with it. Looks like this time (again) they got burned.

I would disagree with his sources being hit or miss. I can't think of a time when he guaranteed something that it didn't happen.

Digitimes must have the worst track record. Up until a few days before the iPad 2 launch they were saying it would have a retina display.

Nah, only fools worship Gruber. His track record isn't all that great. Besides, 98% of all Apple rumors end up being wrong. He might be slightly better than average, but that average is very, Very, VERY low.

There are two sources with better track records (but nothing to write home about): AllThingsD/WSJ and Cnet. You can pretty much toss all other rumors into the circular file.

You are entirely wrong. When Gruber confirms something, it's true. Care to point out when he's been wrong?

no kiddin, can't afford IP5 and iPad3 in the same year anyway...

That sound you hear is the sound of a million iPad 1 owners hearts breaking.

That sound you hear is the sound of a million iPad 2 owners sigh of relief.

I bet a lot of iPad 2 owners (including myself) would be pissed if the iPad 3 came out around Christmas, considering the iPad 2 was just released back in March or April.

Yea, not happy. But emotionally prepared ... Now waiting for Happy Easter

Can we PLEASE go back to talking about the Apple Television set rumors now!?

Did anyone, including Apple, really have firm expectations that mass-production of a retina-display iPad (and the required GPU horsepower) was going to happen for delivery this year?

I wouldn’t say the schedule has been “pushed” or “canceled” without more reliable info that it was ever really coming sooner than 2012.

I eventually lost interest in the iPad because of its lack of required capabilities. Apple seems to have crippled this product so that it can't replace a laptop.

You mean Apple designed a tablet that serves as a tablet instead of a tablet masquerading as a laptop? On purpose?

Please, sir, tell me more.

this is what actually happened...

They figured with asus transformers and samsung 10.1 tablets out, they would have competition. The ipad 2 is still dominating the market so they didn't need to update anything.

Ipad 3 will release next year when sales are down. I don't know why they were gonna release it so soon anyways, if they did, the ipad 2 sales would die... they would be killing the ipad 2 themselves.

I own the first ipad, the 2nd one.. and will the 3rd one if it has the rumored specs. That would be better then my TV.....2,048 by 1,536... my god that's godly

Public note to engineering team

Dudes and dudettes,

Please bite the bullet and simply increase the battery capacity and thickness to simplify solving the other engineering issues while increasing overall battery life, which is very beneficial for a lifestyle media device. Use the time to add Thunderbolt, LTE which can be enabled later if necessary, and of course a larger supply on release.

Just Rocketman

This isn't really surprising news; anyone who thought that Apple would release another iPad when the former is just now catching up with demand was crazy.

Surprising???

Is anyone really surprised by this rumor? I never thought for once we would see an iPad 3/HD in 2011.

It would be crazy to release iPad 3 iPhone 4s/5 and new iPod around the same time people put out crazy rumors sometimes...

I have been saying this was a nonsense rumor since Gruber made it up in February. To be fair, he was clear that he was making it up. He had absolutely ZERO source on that one.

Gruber has good sources. When he is going by them, he delivers good predictions.

Grubers guesses when he is going by his gut is about ZERO percent, driven like many fans, more from wishful thinking.

This never made sense. Apple faces enormous challenge just switching to a new model iPad once a year, why would they do it twice, it would be massively disruptive.

"Apple was originally set to launch its iPad 3 in the second half of 2011..."

...but now they've changed their minds.

Bwahahahaha! What a bunch of backpedaling ********!

Anyone with half a brain already knew that iPad 3 wouldn't be released six months after the market-dominating iPad 2, thanks for stating the obvious, DigiIdiots. :)

Actually, a fair number of MacRumors readers live in a dreamworld, one where the laws of physics and economics of consumer electronics manufacturing have been completely suspended. They are probably deeply disappointed.

I was hoping for the iPad 3 this fall. It would have driven the fanboys out of their minds. And maybe this is just a ploy to through everyone off. They'll have an announcement in a month or two about the iPhone and iPad.

Expected

When you start suing your suppliers expect yield rates to fall :D

Samsung Galaxy Tab will be the first tablet with "retina" display.

I am not disappointed anymore. I eventually lost interest in the iPad because of its lack of required capabilities. Apple seems to have crippled this product so that it can't replace a laptop. Then I saw an ad for an alternative that met the requirements, cost less, and had a more accessible operating system. I was almost about to buy an iPad 2, but if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. The answer is not to go out and buy a new Apple laptop to make up for the lost functionality. The answer is to look for a product that does work, and that was the end of my interest in the premium priced iPad. It sure looked cool, but it's simply not good enough. Maybe the iPad 3 will change that, but that could be another year away.

Blah, blah...better than iPad...blah, blah...iPad premium priced...blah, blah...more functional than IOS..blah, blah. Yeah, we've heard it all before. Every other tablet on the market is better than the iPad. That's what all of the competitions' commercials are saying, too. I suppose the 14 people who've bought the competition think so, also...

Yawn.
