Seems like I'm not the only one who hates the Apple TV 4K remote. I think it's the worst Apple product that I ever held in my hands, keeps driving me crazy.
Might sell the the 4K and go with the new one if they don't sell the remote separately.
They've always sold their remotes separately. I even bought a couple of the silver "Apple TV 3" remotes to use with my Apple TV 4K, after experiencing the Siri Remote for a few weeks.

Waiting until WWDC to see if the iPad Pro gets a way to run a full OS. If so I’ll pull the trigger immediately.
Same here. I‘ll just get an air if the product line continues with the boutique OS.

not going to happen. they already said so. no plans to merge the two. Which means not happening anytime soon like at WWDC.
😂 Ya, because Apple ALWAYS does what they say they are going to do.

Then you won’t be pulling the trigger for perhaps another 5 more years. 😂
What do you know that no one else does? You work at Apple? 😂

…I think there’s no denying that within the next couple years, Apple has to do something to validate the iPad having all this power.
Yep. Right now, buying a 16GB IPP is a speculative play. Will Apple update iPadOS to take advantage of that much RAM? Will software vendors step-up with ‘pro level’ apps that can take advantage of said RAM? Right now…we can only guess, make assumptions and hope.

Same here. If it’s largely the same old ipadOS with better screen sharing and widgets I’ll pass. New iPad is awesome, but as I don’t do photo/video editing on it, the RAM/compute time/colour accuracy bonuses that it brings are pointless for my* usage. I’d be buying it purely for a better media viewing experience which, while nice, would be a ludicrous waste of money on my part. Especially given I use an 11” for travel usage (key worker here) and no new iPad screen technology will ever beat my huge OLED.

Give us better multitasking, some degree of crossover with macOS virtualisation or something and I’m IN!

I’m not actually expecting macOS or any of the above though, I think people are in dreamland re: that. The entire history of the iPad has been baby steps and this years iPad is likely 2018 all over again - beastly fast, with a tiny volume of apps that utilise it.

*great upgrade for those that do utilise it for this though

Why do it quietly? If they have a date then just announce it. They’re not the secret service for heavens sake.
in the earning's call - they said, they will be 'severely' supply constraint with M1 Macs and iPads in the next quarter - they don't want to promise a date until they have sufficient supplies

Given the change, could they be hinting at just the week of 5/15 as products arriving depending on where they are shipping to?

Have you seen MacOS on the iPad after all these years of the iPad’s existence? Exactly! Have a good day. 🙄
Of course not.
but there’s absolutely no denying that three things happened recently that point to something big happening in the future.
A: Apple called the new chip on the new iPad Pro the “M1.” They could have easily, with absolutely no repercussions, just called it the “A14X,” since that is basically what it is. It’s just an A14 with a lot of extra power. But they didn’t, they specifically called it the “M1,” The same name that they use for their Mac chips. I don’t think that that was done without a reason.
B: they specified how much ram the iPad has. Apple has never done that before with an iPad, or any product that isn’t a Mac for that matter. And while we’re talking about Ram…
C: they went from 4 GB of RAM in 2018, to 6 GB of RAM in 2020, to 16 GB of RAM in 2021. There is absolutely no denying that iPadOS runs perfectly fine on four or 6 GB of RAM, and there is absolutely no need for 16 GB of RAM… yet.
now do I think that macOS is just going to be dropped onto the iPad as a button you can push? Absolutely not. However, I do expect, within the next two years, for Apple to be bringing all of its professional applications in some capacity over to the iPad. They pretty much have to, why else would you ever purchase an iPad with 16 GB of RAM and 2 TB of storage?

What do you think, is it possible if i order a CTO iMac, it can ship on May 21st? Or just the base models?

They also once said that video would never come to iPods… and then added video to the iPod.
they also said that third-party applications would never come to the iPhone… before promptly announcing the iPhone SDK 3 months later.
they said that Apple would never make a book store because no one likes to read books... then eight months later introduced the iBooks store.
just because Apple says something doesn’t always make it true.
if someone asked Steve Jobs in December 2006 if Apple was working on a smart phone, he would probably say either “no” or “we have great interest.”
either way, I think there’s no denying that within the next couple years, Apple has to do something to validate the iPad having all this power.
Yep but in this case we are talking WWDC time frame. And execs just said to they have no plan to do it.

so it isn’t happening. But yes no plan today doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen in the long run.

I’m surprised so many people hear want to pony up 59 dollars for a new remote. I hate the thing with all my heart but I’m not going to pay that much. It just means I’m using my ATV less and less.

But good for Apple they have another source of income :) Meanwhile I’m waiting for a new ATV that will be more than a spec bump!

Regarding video iPods, Steve Jobs said "You can't watch a video and drive a car. We're focused on music."
But, he did NOT say that Apple was "never" going to make a video iPod. Just as he did NOT say that Apple would "never make a book store", even though he did say (with tongue in cheek) "nobody reads books". It was all clever misdirection, and you can't use those coy statements as precedent to claim Apple (through Steve Joswiak) is lying when they state adamantly they are not merging macOS and iOS.

Once again, even if they had something planned for WWDC, they’re not gonna come out and say it.
Have you people learned nothing about Apple? When they say they are not doing something, unless it’s something completely ridiculous, they’re usually not always being 100% truthful.
Do I think they’re going to introduce a way to boot the iPad directly into macOS? Of course not.
But I will not be surprised in the slightest if, at WWDC, they introduce some professional applications that can actually take advantage of the 16 GB of RAM, like final cut and logic, as well as bringing over some current Mac exclusive apps like preview and Xcode.

You didn't digest my reply. There's a difference between never and not in ~2 months. It isn't happening at WWDC. When they say they have no plans it doesn't mean they would never do it. They just don't currently have plans to do it. It doesn't mean they can't change their mind. That's what Apple has done in the past. Change their mind. But you can't change your mind on something like putting MacOS on the iPad overnight.

Putting pro apps on the iPad is another story and one that could very well happen at WWDC.

They’ll release something pro-level for the M1 iPPs at WWDC to drive sales. Of course it won’t be full macOS but this is where it will be heading.

Apple has absolutely ALWAYS said one thing early on while secretly doing another. Jobs was notorious for that. Remember when Steve Jobs promised to keep the iPhone screens small for one-handed use?

GAH! Isn't that so weird? I want to upgrade the RAM on the iMac but it would be nice to know how much that's going to be. SHEESH!
I'd guess the upgrade to 16gb and 512gb would be the same as the Mini @ $200 ea.

They are calling it the M1 because it is an M1. They aren't just going to rename it to A14X just because they put it in an iPad it would come out eventually that they were the same chip when teardowns happened.

The increased RAM and different RAM options is all due to the fact that they are using the exact same M1 chips they use for the Macs. Instead of wasting resources creating a separate iPad M1 with only 6 GB ram across each storage size they are using the existing M1 chips, which come in 8GB and 16 GB RAM varieties.

But they never said anything about iPadOS...

I think there is a reason that a couple years ago Apple split iPadOS off from iOS and is now putting an M1 into the iPad Pro with up to 16GB of RAM. Merging implies that they are going to replace both with one thing. What I envision is more like a fork of iOS and a fork of macOS being combined into something new, and yet familiar.

A lot of progress has already been made towards this with the addition of the persistent dock, a sort of "lite windowing" system, and more recently mouse support with it's own clever way of doing things. I expect some announcements at WWDC about macOS apps that are M1 capable being more easily ported to the iPad Pro, along with apps like Xcode, Final Cut, Logic, etc. Those are the perfect apps to show third party developers how it can be done properly and to show the world how powerful the new iPad Pro is.

iPadOS has been pulling towards macOS for a while now, and macOS has been picking up design cues from iPadOS and iOS. They're all going to be a similar family of products, tailored to their primary input methods, with the iPad Pro positioned as more of an in-between device.
