within the next two years, for Apple to be bringing all of its professional applications in some capacity over to the iPad. They pretty much have to, why else would you ever purchase an iPad with 16 GB of RAM and 2 TB of storage?

There is a huge difference between:

Claim 1: iPad OS and macOS will merge and cease to be different operating systems. Both iPads and Macs will run the same operating system supporting all the same input methods and any application written for this operating system will run on all iPads and Macs.

Claim 2: Apple (and others) will bring advanced applications which exist only on the Mac today over to the iPad and iPad will get better at multitasking and multi-windowing.

I think it is odd that the options aren't available to view, and have said that it would be nice to know for sure.

If you think that represents crying about it then that's says a hell of a lot more about you than it does about me.

You could have offered some helpful advice about the difference in price for the SSD between the Mac and iPad, but I see it is easier to just criticise. Nice.
lol. If we didn't already know the upgrade pricing and if I didn't tell you what the upgrade pricing was and how to find it in your country then you would be right that I wasn't helpful and that you aren't crying.

But I will not be surprised in the slightest if, at WWDC, they introduce some professional applications that can actually take advantage of the 16 GB of RAM, like final cut and logic, as well as bringing over some current Mac exclusive apps like preview and Xcode.

Programming Final Cut Pro to work under iPad OS is very different than merging two operating systems.

Even if iPad OS gained the ability to run macOS-applications wouldn't be enough to call it merging.

I would think that the upcoming iPad Pro is one of, if not the, most powerful tablet in the world.

Also, I know Apple usually doesn't say anything about the amount of RAM in its iPhones (and we find out later through other sources).

Is the the first time Apple is revealing up-front the amount of RAM in an iDevice? Or has it been done before and I just missed it?
It definitely is the most powerful tablet in the world. Hands down. The iPad Air with the A14 was marketed as faster than android tablets, and 6x faster than chromebooks. Now with the M1, yeah it’s gonna be untouchable for a while.

After all these years of the iPad’s existence have you ever seen them use a desktop processor in the iPad?
After all these years of the iPad’s existence have you ever seen them differentiate the iPhone OS from the iPad OS like they did last year?
After all these years of the iPad’s existence have you ever seen them have 16 GB of RAM in the iPad?
After all these years of the iPad’s existence have you ever heard them even mention how much RAM is in the iPad?

After all these years of the iPad’s existence and following the progression of OS X, MacOS, iOS, iPhoneOS, and iPadOS are you that short-sighted or just looking for an argument? Exactly! Have a good day. 🙄

Are you saying that Apple will introduce macOS for iPad Pro at WWDC next month?

And this version of macOS will support touchscreens and pen input?

It would have been nice if Apple let us look at the customisation options and prices for those before tomorrow.
I ended up configuring one of the M1 MacBooks just to have an idea. I'd assume the upgrade prices will be exact, if not similar for the configuration options for the new 24" iMac. $200 extra for 16 GB RAM, and $800 for 2 TB SSD, which is the configuration I want, but hate to pay Apple's overpricing for :(

iPadOS has been pulling towards macOS for a while now, and macOS has been picking up design cues from iPadOS and iOS. They're all going to be a similar family of products, tailored to their primary input methods, with the iPad Pro positioned as more of an in-between device.
Agreed. "Moving towards" and "picking up design cues from" are very different things than "merging." I glad that the iPad Pro does NOT run macOS, it's a pleasing break from the cognitive load of interacting with a full-blown desktop OS.

We tech enthusiasts need to remember that the vast majority of the public does not get their jollies from menu-driven interfaces, extensions, scripts, terminal or even keyboard commands. They just want to get their work done and have their fun in the simplest and most direct way possible.

NO, NO, a thousand times NO! You folks yearning for macOS should just buy a freaking MacBook, already! And leave iPad for the rest of us who enjoy the fun and challenge of creating in entirely new ways with the wonderful, future-facing iOS.

Earlier today, Apple posted a Newsroom update reminding customers that the new 24-inch iMac, the M1-powered iPad Pro, and the updated Apple TV 4K will be available for pre-order starting tomorrow. Apple has said these new devices will be available in the second half of May, but now, it may have quietly confirmed a specific date.

It was also confirmed by John Lewis stores in the UK, but that information was then deleted
Spotted first by Jason Aten on Twitter, and confirmed by MacRumors, Apple's Newsroom update on its UK and Australian website has confirmed that the new devices will be available on May 21. Metadata within the Newsroom update says, "The all-new iMac, iPad Pro, Apple TV 4K, purple iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, and AirTag arrive in stores and on doorsteps around the world May 21."

imac-may-21.jpg

While the metadata says the new iMac, iPad Pro, and Apple TV will start arriving on May 21, the description is incorrect in saying that AirTags and the purple iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 will also be arriving on the same day. AirTags and the newly colored iPhone 12 became available for pre-order last week and will begin arriving to most customers tomorrow, Friday, April 30.

Update 8:01 a.m.: Apple has updated the metadata on its press release pages to remove the references to May 21. The description now reads: "The all-new iMac, iPad Pro, and Apple TV 4K arrive in stores and on doorsteps around the world in the second half of May. iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini in purple and AirTag are available now."

Except that I never stated that macOS would be coming to the iPad.
I said that the line between iPadOS and macOS would get even more blurry, but I never said that Apple would add A button to the iPad that just boots you into Big Sur

Are you saying that Apple will introduce macOS for iPad Pro at WWDC next month?

No. Because the iPad, is not a Mac. It’s not called a Mac. Mac is not even in the name.
at WWDC, Apple will introduce iPadOS 15, which I expect to be a lot more Mac like.
a much more powerful file manager, much more customizable and in-depth multitasking, professional applications like Final Cut and logic, stuff that will actually take advantage of that 16 GB of RAM and 2 TB of storage.
but it will still be iPadOS, it will still be modified for touchscreen input.

So then we agree?

For the foreseeable future Apple will have both iPad OS and macOS. And Macs will not get touchscreens and macOS will not support it.

Those, like me, who thinks that macOS will remain separate from iPad OS for the foreseeable future would not necessary disagree with anything you say above.

So you agree with Apple and me that macOS will be separate for at least the next few years?

Definitely. But I do think that in the end, I don’t know when this will happen but eventually, one of the platforms will have to win, at least for average consumers.
And then once that happens, I think the other one will be designated for only certain groups of people.
Basically what I’m saying is, 10 years from now, the majority of people will be using iPadOS. macOS’s advantages over iPadOS are just going to shrink and shrink. They’re already pretty small. Why buy a MacBook Air that’s fixed into a clamshell, without a touchscreen, with only a keyboard and mouse input, when you can buy an iPad, that you can put on a keyboard with trackpad, or take it off and use it touchscreen, or use it with a pencil?
Obviously asking that question right now, the majority of people say because macOS has more software availability than iPadOS. But I don’t think that argument will be valid within five years from now.

That’s a long ship time. These supply chain constraints must be a factor. Or I guess they want to know how many components to order based on presales?

I think they’ll continue the trend of merging the two OS’. I’m hoping for a real “Finder” type of app on the iPad and true multi-window support. What they have now isn’t “Pro”.

NO, NO, a thousand times NO! My challenge is finding and implementing a solution to a problem. Not how to use an overpowered, underdeveloped, tool.

You folks shouldn’t be asking “how do I get this work done on a limited machine?” You should be demanding a “professional” computing device offers a “professional” OS. Stick with the entry level iPad if that’s what you want and let the pro’s have “pro” devices.

So many of this mindset are missing the point. The iPad is perfect for “professionals” of a certain type: artists, musicians, photographers, graphic designer, etc. (And yes, this all counts as REAL work, despite what some tech-snobs say). If someone isn’t among this group, then a Mac is likely better suited for them.

Choose the right tool, rather than complain about how your 2-seater sports car won't let you haul firewood from the lumberyard.

Your analogy is terrible. There are more professions out there than YouTube/podcast content creators despite what snobby internet influencers think.

We are getting the power of a desktop processor in a tablet. It shouldn’t be held back because some “artist“ can’t figure out how to use more than one application at a time, or the idea of a file system scares them.

Okay, this is becoming pointless.
Here's the bottom line:

Can an iPad replace a laptop?
No, it cannot. Unless for your particular needs, it can.

Yes, it can. Unless for your particular needs, it cannot.

Only each person knows what their "pro" needs are.

It’s not pointless. You are actually making my point.

The iPad exceeds at many things but also falls short in others. Most of it was because of the limits of the hardware. Even with a more advanced OS, one that is aligned with MacOS 11, a laptop will still be better at many tasks. That is a good thing all around. I see a further merge of the two OS this year at WWDC.

My bad I thought you were against adding functionality to the Pro device to appease a multitude of users. Must have misread your posts.

Cant wait until we’re both using a more capable iPad Pro! Bring on WWDC!

While over in the iMac thread apparently anything outside of creative arts does not warrant the pro badge .. 😂
