Mine updated in less than 15 seconds
1: Leave Airpods in case with case open
2: Verify Airpods are connected in Bluetooth settings
3: Go to Settings/General/About and look at for Airpods, which should appear immediately after SEID

I stayed on the General/About screen for a about 10 seconds, and my Airpods disappeared from the screen.
15 seconds later they reappeared with the updated firmware

Thanks. worked here :)

Not for me. They connected a little faster, but audio is completely distorted.

Do you think having too many Bluetooth devices could be the issue? I have Magic KB, Mouse, and Trackpad all going.

Is your audio distorted at connection or does it take time? For me, I have the Beats Solo3 and the airpods and mainly use these devices for conference calls over wifi (though I live in the city, AT&T's signal isn't strong enough at home). After some time (in 10-20 minutes or so) the sound quality gets garbled/distorted and I have to quickly change my audio source (to speaker for example and then back to bluetooth and the problem is "fixed"). I will be interested to see if the new airpods FW fixes this issue. BTW my FW on the Solo3 is 5.9.9. Not sure if this updated or not as well.

For those who cant update just listen to some music on them and after a while the music pause and airpods reconnects and you have the new firmware

I have two pairs here and cannot get either of them to update. Has anyone in the UK had any success in updating? Wondering if the update is rolling out around the world gradually...

I'm using all the same devices except for the mouse and I haven't noticed any distortion so far.

Did you try what post 53 above mentioned?

Does this fix the issue of modern music sounding terrible?

1) Does the same music sound similarly terrible when using Apple's EarPods? If so, the AirPods aren't your problem.

2) Which app are you using to listen to music? if it's Apple's Music app, have you tried changing the equalizer settings to better suit your music?

I had issues with my 7 plus dropping audio sometimes and phone call quality / drops. I hope this will fix it I need to go charge it haha
I don't think is only the AirPods, is the iPhone 7 that has issues with Bluetooth I was testing a pair of Bose QC 35 and sometimes the audio skips. I also have skipping audio with the Bluetooth radio of my car.

Under 10.2.1 (final beta), my AirPods were fine. Now under 10.3 beta 1, they're constantly dropping out while playing music. It's not a bluetooth issue, it's explicitly when my 7 Plus is doing something. Like turning the screen on or unlocking.

Edit: just tested, and that's a negative. Still cutting out on me.

Just checking now, mine are at 3.5.1 (I'm running 10.3b1)

Though, I never had any issues with mine, so it'll be difficult for me to tell what changes there were. Ok, well, the following scenario happens to me:

  1. iPhone using AirPods for audio out
  2. Get in bluetooth enabled car. Start car. Car takes over bluetooth from phone (as desired)
  3. Get to destination, turn off car, get out.
  4. iPhone doesn't reconnect to the AirPods, I have to manually reconnect
... though I've attributed this to the bluetooth handling in the iPhone itself, not due to any firmware issue in the AirPods (eg. I have zero trouble manually reconnecting to them).

The way I updated mine, plug the case into the charger, open the case so it connects to your device, close the case and leave it sit for around 2 minutes, open the case and it updated. Couple of coworkers also tried it without plugging in the case but couldn't get them to update. So I suggest plugging the case in and seeing if it works for you. By the way, yes the airpods need to be in the case and I updated on the latest Dev Beta 1 10.3 (iphone 7 plus), both coworkers are on 10.2.1 (iphone 6s plus and iphone 7)

Yup, that's exactly what I did and got the same result, with one caveat... Mine were plugged in, and didn't seem to update until the case's battery was charged over 50%. Maybe it was just random chance on the timing of that, but they seemed to update as soon as they were charged up to the halfway point. I suppose YMMV here.

EDIT: I am running the latest beta.

Not that this helps you at all, but I'm running 10.3b1 and I haven't noticed any dropping out. Hopefully b2 or b3 will fix this for you. :(

>The update to AirPods is automatic for any AirPods in their Charging Case and connected to a nearby iOS device.

When I put my AirPods in the charging case they disconnect from my iPhone. Still on 3.3.1

Open the lid and reconnect

At least one Airpod has to be in your ear for it to appear
nope they can be in the case if the lid is open

You also have to be able to catch the like 10 minute window when they are actually available from AT&T, Verizon, etc.

And hope that their availability info and estimated delivery dates are actually accurate - something they're not exactly known for.

curious..... did you consider going to an audiologist and getting custom ear molds for the AirPods? I ask because no manufacture can possibly make in-ear headphones that fit all ears.

https://www.earsound.com

I don't think custom ear molds will fit inside the AirPods' charging case. Also, the ear molds cost as much as the AirPods, which is kind of ridiculous.
