What about the grandma and grandpas with expendable income who buy Apple products like they are groceries? This will not fare well for them when they upgrade their ram.

It will bode well for Apple though...

Well, that is not how it really works. They are indeed doing something that could be illegal.

Wait, so someone IS holding a gun to your head? I can easily name 10 places you can get RAM cheaper, and it's fully within your right to do so, just like you can choose to buy Apple RAM, or just an entirely different computer all together. Is it illegal for movie theaters to charge an exorbitant amount for drinks and candy? Or one bar charging $10 for a drink while another charges you $5 for the same? If so, there's a hell of a lot of businesses breaking the law out there, what do you think? Also, I was standing in front of my place yesterday. I could have been doing something illegal. but I wasn't. So there you go.

IS what Apple is doing illegal? No. Is it morally right? Probably not, but it's no different to what others do, although they do charge more of a premium.

Having just checked on Dell's website, to double the RAM from 4GB to 8GB on their XPS 15 laptop clocks in at £130, a bit less than Apple but still far in excess of what it costs to buy the RAM yourself.
