A 15" without an optical, thinner but still has room for 16gb ram, 2.5" drive for loads of space and discrete graphics would be great. I really want an MBA but can't sacrifice memory and hard drive + graphics right now.

Make my mobile computing dreams come true Apple!

they said digitimes! ROFLMAO

If this were printed on paper, it wouldn't even have credibility enough to wipe your butt with it.

Someone poke me when a more credible source has something to say, like one who isn't wrong 99.8% of the time or who doesn't just make up things for something to say.

Well, have you stopped to think that if Apple removes the ODD you won't be able to do that anymore. :D

You don't need an onboard ODD if you are only going to use it 10 or so times during the life of your computer. Better to have an external ODD that can be shared amongst all your computers, present and future.

As long as it comes with USB3 and gigabit ethernet ports I wouldn't miss not having an optical drive.

I'd like to see omission of optical drive in favor of smaller form factor, SSD/HDD dual option and possibly larger battery life. I'm not expecting a 15" air the same thickness as the 11/13", but something substantially thinner/lighter than the current unibody specs

Unless Apple removes all software from the shelf and put it online, there will be a need for the ODD.

We know that Apple has the best servers in the world that can handle ALL the downloads when they have something new that comes out and the world wants it at the same time!:rolleyes: Think back when Lion came out, when a new iOS comes out, what issues have you run into trying to download.

It actually isn't Apple that's to be thanked for that - Apple's servers are merely hosting the data. All of these downloads, whether from iTunes or the App store, and handled by satellite servers and caching algorithms owned and operated by a company called Akamai. Apple pays them boatloads of money to ensure fast and uninterrupted downloading to macs and i-products.

I disagree. The 13" has such a low resolution that even the 320M can play games such as Skyrim, so I'm pretty happy with my Macbook White's performance.

However, as you said, a higher screen resolution IS necessary, so I'm upgrading to the 17" this Fall as my mobile/desktop solution.

Actually you misunderstood my post. I was not referring to resolution at all. I was referring to SIZE. 13" just blows to game on in MY opinion. I am quite satisfied overall with any resolution. I just didn't enjoy how small things were, esp when I am coming down from a 27" iMac.

Release in April is too optimistic. I think Apple will ship their new notebooks in June.

For sure, they're not going to release one and then the other. Plus the iPad just launched ... they'll give that at least 8 weeks in the spotlight before they launch anything else.

Late May, early June for new 13 and 15" MBP's.

I'm guessing they'll be black in color along with the new design.

I should have enough saved up in June, along with my credit cards to get one. I'm so going Mac when these suckers come out. Starting school soon, and a Mac just seems like it would work for me better than another windows machine. I'm going to be broke for about a month or two after though. Ugh...

I am slowly accepting the fact that there will be no optical disc drive, but a discrete GPU and an actual spinning-disc HDD are mandatory. Even if the Ivy Bridge integrated GPU is "up to 70% faster" than the current crappy Intel IGP, it is not an acceptable graphics processor for a real pro system.

Call me dense, but I am still not seeing the difference between a 13' MBP sans ODD and 13' MBA. Is it really as straightforward as smaller SSD vs larger HDD? What am I missing? :confused:

I do like the idea of a slimmer laptop having both SSD for the operating system + key files, and a HDD for all your work/movies/music etc, with longer batt life thrown in as well. However, I still feel that it seems more elegant for apple to just merge the air and pro line for 13' and streamline their laptop offerings.

A 11' for unparalleled portability, 13' for normal work stuff, and 15' for hardcore power users? No more air vs pro, it's just macbook all the way. :p

Why not? When the 12" and 17" MBPs were first introduced (Jan '03) the 15" update was noticeably missing from the announcement. The updated 15" was announced in April.

I agree it's unlike Apple to have one product launch stepping on another, but this is the post PC world. I can see Apple doing a silent launch on the 15" in mid/late April and then announcing the 13" and 17" at WWDC, presumable in mid June.

Dell Track Record

Always good to hear of another with consistent issues with Apple laptops :).

2002 iBook - optical drive replaced;
2003 iBook - logic board replaced 3 times, eventually sold, acknowledged lifetime logic board repair programme;
2005 12" PowerBook - logic board replace twice, eventually sold cheap to a friend;
2008 15" MacBook Pro - logic board replaced once, acknowledged lifetime logic board repair programme, and 'replace battery' warning twice;
Late 2011 Dell XPS15 - no issues, and none expected.

So you think the track record of a laptop you bought from Dell in late 2011 will predict future performance of that same Dell? From my experience, it'll have no battery by late 2012, your screen will fail by mid-2013, and by 2014, you'll be searching for another computer...

I wish you the best, but that's been my track record with Dell, or most PC manufacturers.

YES! NO MORE USELESS OPTICAL DRIVE!
I'll be the first one to order the new 15' MBP! Been waiting for too long to upgrade my 2007 MBP!

I am in the exact same boat. I almost want my 2007 MBP to die so I have an excuse to buy a new one. But I'm getting the next release reguardless.

Matt high res screen MBP 13"

A MBP 13.3" is badly needed with the matt screen.

I do hope apple will change their strange practice of only offering a non glass
(glare and other isssues) on their 15" & 17" models as an option.

I mean they charge more for it then the standard glass, and this is just removing the glass so even they know it is JUST THAT MUCH BETTER!

Now lets also move toward an OLED screen so HD video is Supreme.

Video (both streaming and youtube playback) is close to a joke on the new ipad with the 'retina display'.

No!!! It was handy! I ripped it out and used the bay for a second HDD to pair with my SDD :D

I am begging you, Apple...

PLEASE:

Axe the 17".
Reduce the MBP line to integrated graphics only.
Take away a few ports.
Solder the memory AND ssd down.
Make it the ULTIMATE facebook machine for the "pro" on the go.

I implore you to do these things, as I recently sold my MBP and built a desktop, and really don't want to go through the hassle of selling it if you actually make a new Macbook Pro that's appealing to power users.

So pumped for the 15". It's going to be my first Mac computer. Need one bad for photo and video editing, so I'm glad they could be out as soon as end of April or early May

Same, it will be my first and have really thought about other options like iMac or MBA, but the new suspected 15" MBP sound really appealing especially with a redesign and the retina display for the use at UNI in september with architectural 3D high res programs.

Also with it being my first i am quite new to some of these subjects but hopefully i am picking up the lingo with the mac world. Always had an iPhone and love them + fingers crossed getting the new iPad on the same day as the MBP :D:apple::D
