This production ramp will surely just exacerbate Apples long, slow, and sad decline in quality. Just a few years ago (around the time of the Titanium Powerbook G4, for example) an Apple product was almost guaranteed to last a lifetime with no faults whatsoever. Now, despite all their fame, technical innovation, and marketing success, we have products like the iPad which are just so glitchy and fragile.

I once read that Steve Jobs personally tests every Apple product before it ships. That was when Apple were shipping a few million Macs a year, and I'm sure even that workload kept him very busy. Now, with 2M iPads alone, per month(!), I just can't see how it is possible.

Please tell me you're kidding.

For me the lack of camera is even a bigger omission with the release of iP4 and Facetime. Also with iOS 4.x not due for it until November, might as well wait for v2.

It would have been great but I would think it's because Apple (and the rest of the market) see the iPhone as a top tier, Flagship product. Certainly the iPad will get a ‘Facetime’ camera, but to have a mass market net surfer get both a brand new software and hardware feature before their flagship iPhone would have been a bit sloppy in managing product features. The only way they could have fixed that would have been to release the iPad after the iPhone, and that would have taken ALL the wind out of its sails. Apple had a hard enough time winning over nay-sayers that the iPad is a useful and legitimate product, without having a brand spanking new iPhone to compare it against.

The Morons Are The Ones Waiting For Gen 2 iPad Instead Of Buying One Now

After having the iPhone 4 since launch, and seeing the iPad again, it looks OUTDATED.

The resolution/screen pale in comparison to the iPhone 4. Anyone who purchases an iPad from this point on is a moron.

Wait for the 2nd gen AT LEAST, and hope the resolution/screen is similar to the iPhone 4!
Yeah. Wait for gen 2 iPads while not having the gen 1 experience with one right now. That's the moronic advice everyone should ignore. The only morons are everyone who hasn't already ordered one but could. Only reason to not get an iPad now is if you can't afford the expense. Otherwise the idea of not having the current edition while waiting for the next one is just plain dumb. You will be able to sell the current model for almost the price of the next one when it comes out. Current ownership will probably cost you $100 when the next one is delivered to you. Get real.

If you think $100 is too much money to spend to have an iPad now as well as when gen 2 ships, then you clearly can't afford to own one in the first place. And as long as the current model ships faster than Apple can make them, there's no reason to expect a revision anytime soon. Sure I'd like to see a camera and retina display etc. But that doesn't make the current model any less compelling than it already is. I'm a triple dipper. I carry all three devices with me wherever I go. I listen to my iPod Touch while I read my iPad as my iPhone keeps me in touch in other complementary ways. I love to use them all at once.

Still waiting to order my 32GB WHITE iPhone 4. :p

My wife has an ipad and I just got a new iphone 4. They're just different- I'd much prefer having an ipad for commutes and content consumption, but then it would make a crappy phone :) I think the iPad is an incredible bit of kit and I don't find it hard to imagine this becoming more ubiquitous than laptops and the first choice for the average consumer (who can afford it). It makes a lot of sense if you have a pc at home, although travelling is still easier with a laptop, and will remain so until either wifi become more common in out-of-the-way places or ipad develop an emergency ethernet port...

Wow. I tried using both my iPod Touch and new iPhone for a few days and found it pointless, so now the Touch is collecting dust. I haven't decided if I should try to sell it or give it to a family member.

Not overpriced to me - and to most everyone since they are selling like hotcakes. These prices are fine. And all future models with even mode power, memory and features will be priced the same. I have almost nothing on mine and it's using 19GB of RAM. So I know the 16GB model is useless while the 32GB model is compromised. Only the 64GB model has enough RAM to get me to the next release without having to think about what I will need to delete to put something new on it. I happily paid $829 for it. Am I nuts or do I perceive value in the top of the line model like so many others that only you and a few other carpers do not?

1)It's not RAM Mr. Hotshot...it's STORAGE. Your iPod has 64GB of STORAGE.

2)It's readily known that the 64GB models are always in stock while the 16GB is constantly sold out...pretty obvious that SINCE THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IN EACH 3 MODELS IS STORAGE that people feel the 64GB is overpriced...otherwise they would be buying them to hold all their tunes, movies, games, etc.

3)I wouldn't call myself a carper...rather, "an informed consumer" who also happens to be a proud owner of an iPhone 3GS that can do 90% of what said iPad will do. I clearly stated that I would look at the Rev 2 of the iPad if it drops in price, adds storage, and adds some features (better display, some free games (like the iPods have had for the past 5+ years), USB 3.0 support, etc).

4)If you own the 64GB model, fine. I have no beef with that. You feel it's worth that much of a premium to have 64GB. I do not. But I'm certainly not belittling you because of your decision.

After much deliberation, I finally decided to get an iPad (16GB Wifi-only). Went down to my local apple store. This was yesterday July 5th. The place was packed. Had to wait a few minutes before I could flag someone down. They were already with a customer but were gracious enough to check to see if they had the kind of iPad I wanted. Turns out they didn't.

Its amazing that the iPad is still that much in demand. We jokingly inquired if the iPhone 4 was in stock. He said they have a reservation list thats so long that they can't even guess at a timeline.

I'm starting to reconsider my decision. Maybe get a 3G ipad instead?

Dang, I had really expected that Denmark would be among the next round of countries to get the iPad. The iPhone 4 is becoming available here in the next iPhone 4 round, by the end of July.

Does anyone have a more qualified guess than mine, as to when the iPad hits the next round of countries (almost guaranteed including Denmark)?

I am from Denmark as well, and i also dont understand why its not releasing in Denmark, Sweden & Norway??, whats happening with apple:confused:

Well, within a few weeks the iPad will be 5 months old. If you don't buy by August 1, I would say hold out...there are/were rumors of other iPad flavors coming this Fall.

Also, depending on what you already own from Apple, why not consider an iPod Touch which is considerably cheaper (and physically smaller) but basically does everything the current iPad does.

Don't you think that, just maybe, Apple are making a lot more 64GB models since those models carry a much higher profit margin? That extra 32-48GB doesn't add an extra $100-$200 to the production cost, and neither does the 3G hardware. Its mostly extra profit.

How many people go in to an Apple store wanting to buy a 16GB then get upsold when they find out only the 64GB is in stock? There are more 64GB models in stock because there are more 64GB models being produced.

I'm waiting for iPad 3rd gen when it has PixelQi, holographic display, 4k resolution and haptic feedback. Anyone waiting for the 2nd gen is a moron and will be outdated the next year after. /s

Honestly, this mentality of waiting just to have the next best hardware features will never really enjoy the product as it is today. Buyers remorse.

When iPod Touch Gen 2 came out, a guy I knew said he was going to wait for iPod Touch Gen 3 to have camera. When it came out a year after, he was so pissed off. He was even more pissed off when the new iPod Nano came out with a camera instead. Lol! He ended up buying the iPhone.

Also obsoleteness has no correlation with new hardware additions. Obsoleteness is relevant when new versions of software cannot keep up with old hardware. Can your Apple II run Snow Leopard?

Nope. I bet Apple, at least for the few months of launch, were either a)making a ton more 16GB models or b)making the same of all 3-sized models. I think it's a hard sell for someone to buy a $700 64GB iPod Touch Max. Yes, I'm being a bit synical with the Max reference but still...$700 is a lot of cash in this economy for this kind of device.

I'm sure this happens...but DO THEY BUY? I doubt Apple can turn a $499 sale into a $699 sale just because it's out of stock...and also because it simply "holds more stuff". Again, Apple should have added a bit more than just pure storage for their higher end models. To a lot of people, 16GB is plenty for their iPad usage (example: they may not use it to store videos and just need it for tunes...like my 16GB iPhone 3GS)...but to many others, 16GB is a joke if you truly want to store movies, books, music, and other stuff on the device.

I have.........

a Black macbook from 3 years ago, an iPad 32GB and an iPhone 4 that I just got. I do 90% of what I did on the macbook on my iPad now. Kinda wish I'd bought a 64gb model and I may go for more storage/3G options when I ever upgrade in a couple years. The things I do on my macbook that I don't do on the iPad center around file storage/movement/etc. I think that some of those things will someday be made better on the iPad. I can definitely see that it's a netbook killer for the most part. I'm a little concerned that the flow of iPad apps hasn't really ramped up that much. There are some really nice apps and a bunch of crappy ones. Fortunately, many if not all the iPhone apps work on the iPad and actually look pretty nice in 2X mode. All the games for my four year old moved nicely from the iPhone platform to the iPad, which she calls the 'BIG PHONE'.

I too wonder at the 2M/Month number. To see that manufacturing plant that Foxconn has would be incredible. I work for UPS and know we're flying full planeloads of all Apple's products across the pond. Extra flights to keep up with demand lately.

How is ramping up production to 2 million a month "losing steam"?

You really should know that Apple won't sell any of those. It is impossible, because there will be only 3.5 million tablets sold this year. It's true, an analyst said so.

My Apologies Eric But An iPod Touch Is Not A Small iPad

I apologize for insulting you. Not my intention. But now you're telling people an iPod Touch is like a small iPad? It's not. Plus you're the expert on when gen 2 iPads will ship soon this year according to rumors? Doubtful there will be any changes to the iPad this year. I will buy one if there are. But I would caution anyone who thinks they may only have to wait a few months for that to happen may be waiting until January and beyond. Repeat: an iPod Touch is NOT a small iPad. Conversely an iPad is NOT a large iPod Touch. That's why I always buy both plus an iPhone every year. There are many thousands of applications only for the iPad not available for the iPod Touch.

data point

as a note, I was in the bellvue wa store over the weekend, and All 3g models were gone. I suppose people want that connectivity option, even if they don't use it.

sweet

I really gave the whole concept a low score, but then when I saw what I could do with it, use it for classes in lieu of lugging super-heavy law books around, I decided to get one.

ZERO regrets. They are a bit cost-prohibitive though. I think they should be about $249 for the low-end models, which is what I got. They'll probably lower it to compete with the low-end android and other OS tablets... and I'll feel a$$ed out for spending $499 on it... but ya live, ya learn, or don't learn.

I was on the subway this weekend and saw a guy playing chess on his iPad. I liked his case and asked him where he bought it. I pulled out my iPad to show him my case. Then a guy sitting across from us opened his bag and pulled his out. Then another guy had a shrink wrapped iPad in his backpack and pulled it out saying he just got it as a gift. We all looked at each other and started laughing. So yeah, there are lots of iPads out in the wild in NYC.

1)No problem on the apology

2)In a very very very general way, to a lot of people, yes, the iPad is just an iPod Touch (or iPhone 3GS) but larger...with a much steeper price tag...and with a few extra features that you may or may not need/want. We could sit here for hours writing replies on this topic (as was done in March when the iPad was announced) but I think it's a waste of our time. I agree that they are obviously different devices, with different physical traits, with different features, all for different USE CASES. However, what I tend to believe and agree with a lot of people is that the iPad, on a very large front, is not much more than an iPod Touch or iPhone 3GS(minus the phone and camera). If you look at all the features that overlap (touchscreen, wifi, apps/app store, email, ipod/music, user interface, photo library) they are extremely similar. Where they differ are physical size, screen resolution, ebooks, and newer apps (but everything will always be newer and enhanced).

My formula for determining if a person should buy an iPad goes something like this:

If you do not own an iPod Touch...AND you do not own an iPhone 3GS (or later)...AND you do not intend on buying either of the above 2 (for any reason whatsoever)...AND you are in the market for an iPad-type of device(plays music, touchscreen, web surfing, ebook reading, apps, etc)...then it's a great device to own.

If, on the other hand, you already own a Touch or iPhone, you better have some really good reasons/needs to buy an iPad since the features of the iPad/Touch/iPhone overlap in great detail (unless of course you just have $500+ burning a hole in your pocket).

I'm eager to see what the new iPod family lineup will be in Sep...it will also be very interesting over the next year or 2 to see where the lines blur and where they greatly sharpen with the iPod, iPhone, and iPad families.

I dunno, define "really good reasons/needs"? I mean, that's one amorphous imperative to throw on to others. My wife and I have iP4's. Great mobile devices, but not designed for casual around the house use IMO (size of display, size of keyboard, hand feel.) That's where your PC (or Mac), TV, or what-have-you comes into use and your phone goes on the charger, all else being equal.

Are those really good reasons to have the larger form factor iPad along with an iPhone or Touch? I think so and I decidely do NOT have $500 burning a hole in my pocket. Your mileage may vary along with your eyesight. But to me they seem to be completely different devices for different uses. Some overlap, sure. But then again, I have three PC's in my house, complete overlap, and they ALL seem to be used quite fequently. *shrug*

It seems like the iPad in the US has lost some steam. No one is talking about it anymore (especially after the iP4 release).

It will be interesting to see how it manages in the next year here in the US.

If it lost steam in the US, you can bet that it will hardly sell in other parts of the world.

wondering if we get content then too. up to now there's no vid-content available and also the iBooks are missing (only proj.G books, free) and therefor the iPad isn't that much interesting here...confused:

That's what I'm talking about. Without apps and platform-specific content, the iPad is just a disappointing device to browse some websites that have no Flash elements.

Thats an incredible amount, 2 million a month is around 2700 an hour! I'm struggling to comprehend the scale of the production effort that must be required to achieve that.

...and the hype!

Can't wait for the second gen iPad's to hit the market. :D

What's wrong with this prototype? :)

I sppose that selling 1+ mi ipads per month is routine and expected for apple..

No, it's not. They are not selling them at the rate of million a month.

How is ramping up production to 2 million a month "losing steam"?

It's not about making them, it's about buying them. Expect price reductions (starting with overseas markets not having to pay the usual extra), otherwise there is no way of keeping up the hype.

(No, it's not. They are not selling them at the rate of million a month.)

Actually, they are selling them at a faster pace than that.

The 2 millionth was at the 60 day mark

The 3 milllionth was at the 80 day mark.

This shows that ipad sales have gained momentum, not lost momentum as the 3rd million were sold in just 20 days. This is less time than the previous two million which took 60 days to sell.

At current pace, the 4 millionth should be sold by Saturday of this week...if it hasn't already.

If it wasn't for the ipad, I think I would be going crazy right now without a new iPhone.

Believe the hype fellow mates, the ipad is awesome!

You'd be crazy to buy an iPhone 4 now, when one defect is found after the other. Believe the complaints, fellow mate, the iPhone 4 in it's current form is seriously flawed.

The iPhone has forged ahead of the iPad, with it having iOS 4, dual cameras, an incredible display, and more RAM. Not to mention the fact that tech geeks are always fixated on the latest thing, so that hurts the iPad as well (next gadget on the clock - the iPod Touch). I'm still of the opinion that the iPad will ultimately be more of a niche product than a ubiquitous one like the iPhone or MacBook, but we will see.

It's a shame that only months after its launch, the iPad is officially under-specced, under-performing and overpriced.

I kind of thought that that has been the case for a while... since launch, to be precise.

I have almost nothing on mine and it's using 19GB of RAM. So I know the 16GB model is useless while the 32GB model is compromised. Only the 64GB model has enough RAM to get me to the next release without having to think about what I will need to delete to put something new on it. I happily paid $829 for it.

Just to be precise - your iPad has 256MB RAM, half of what several smart phones have, including the iPhone 4. Whatever you do on the device, you won't have much left.

That is the case with your $829 gadget too. It might be pricey, but it only has the RAM of a decade-old computer.

To heck with pushing ipad production, push iPhone4 production! There's serious shortfalls in iphone4's.

The serious shortfalls of the iPhone 4 are the serious defects.

The only thing that really looks dated about the iPad is that it lacks folders and the multitasking of iOS 4.

So revolutionary that a phone can beat it. In fact, much older jailbroken devices have been beating it. Magical!

The company's next round of international launches, set for later this month, includes Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore.

Apple how about you tell those nine countries the date you're planning on releasing the iPad? If the iPad supply increases shouldn't they be able to at least give us customers on those nine countries a release date?
