Like we didn't see this coming, of course the second generation is going to have a camera. And to all the people who are saying "oh, I"m getting the second generation" you are just jealous, and you're making up for the fact that you don't have an iPad.
Like seriously that was the first reaction of all my friends when they found out I had an iPad, "Oh, well I'm getting the second generation"
and I bet none of them will ever get iPads.

(sorry about this unrelated rant, I just had to get it off my chest.)

umad cause my ipad will have a camera?

I'm waiting for the (hopeful) release of the smaller iPad. If it has the camera, I'll probably use it once or twice; but it's not a significant factor for me. I've had laptop cameras for years (starting with the external Firewire iSight), and I bet I can count the total number of times I've used one on one hand...

I also had the first Firewire iSight. It was kind of cool. I used it a few times with this one girlfriend . . . But beside that, I've rarely used video conferencing despite the fact that the iBook and iMac that I've had since have both had a camera built in. I've had an iPhone 4 for about a month and done a Facetime chat once with a friend who was in the same room as me and who wanted to test it out. Video conferencing just has not taken off. Will it eventually? I don't know. But it certainly won't make the iPad a must buy. I've got an iPad as well and use it daily. I've never thought, gee I want to video chat. Heck, I probably text and email with my friends more than I talk to them on the phone anyway.

Let's see if this video stuff takes off. But if you have been holding off on the iPad because you think that it can't do enough unless it can video chat, well I hope that video chatting is already a big part of your life. Because that technology has been available for many years now. I doubt that it being available in one large and somewhat awkward to hold piece of hardware is going to suddenly make it a big part of your life. If free iChat video hasn't done it yet, then adding an iPad with a camera probably isn't going to make a difference.

If you want my prediction, I don't think the iPad gets an upgrade before January. Apple will still sell every iPad they can make for the rest of the year with or without a camera. Yeah, they might add one, but only if they can also find a way to produce a bunch more iPads because the current problem is their production supply. Sure you now have a chance at buying them in the U.S. That doesn't mean the production has caught up with demand. We will only reach that point when the iPad is available in every country where Macs are sold. Only once every big box store and Apple store has a full assortment of iPads, then and only then can you say that supply has equaled demand and then there might need to be an upgrade in functionality to increase demand.

It won't be long before the 1st gen iPad getting left behind like the iPhone 3G and 1st Gen iTouch.

I will give it 2 years max before the next OS won't be compatible with the 1st Gen iPad, by then that thing will feel like something from ancient time. That's how much followup support Apple give to their mobile products.

a lesson to you all , NEVER BUY 1ST GENERATION APPLE PRODUCTS

as they haven't had enough real world testing and are too expensive with things missing that are later added by Apple (such as 3G to the iphone, sd card slot to macbooks/imacs, ios 4 to ipad, a working antenna to the iphone 4, blu -ray(?) and now a camera to the ipad).

Wait until 2nd Generation and look in amusement at the cool kids/wanna-be celebs lay down their rent money for the Apple product of the month.

Dear Adam:

1. As soon as you get out of school, get a job, okay? It'll pay better than your paper route.

2. The cost of an iPad would barely cover a single months rent in any city worth living in. Besides, if you're a renter, you're just paying someone else's mortgage.

Now run along. Time for you to have sugar plum dreams about your iPad 2nd generation. Boo hoo that you didn't get a first generation for your birthday. Maybe next quarter you'll break a C-average and mom will get you one.

When will car manufacturers start building facetime cameras in their cars?

Where are the laws against facetiming while driving?

When will basic laneline phones facetime cameras?

When will the nano get a facetime camera?

Cheese with that wine?

Please people, stop with the "And thats why I don't by first Gen" or "Thanks suckers who bought first Gen". Shut up already. Then you can buy my used one Ebay when I buy 2nd Gen, then 3rd Gen. Virtually every single product Apple makes gets updated like clockwork once a year (or 18 months). You know this, this is not news, if you don't buy one now then never buy one because a new on will always be just round the bend.

Sheesh, shut up already.

My current iPad runs just fine without it.

Wait until it is running 4.2

While I don't think I will mind it, it's something that would be nice to have. I am probably still going to hold out until the 3rd gen iPad (with 4G) before I replace mine.

Wow.
People are SO mad that their precious iPad is going to be replaced by something better, that they're resorting to these insults.
It's pathetic, really

Here are answers to your various questions.

1. We don't know.

2. Up to the individual state

3. Unknown, since we don't know what a "laneline" phone is. A basic phone can call another phone number.

4. We don't know.

I like my first gen iPad. Always will. FaceTime? Who cares. Nobody uses that. I don't want to look at your fat face when I speak to you. I have things to do.

LOL

This is one of the funniest threads.

There will always be something better out given a year or two. Sure in 6-7 years the iPad will be 2mm thick, and you'll be able to fold it up and stick it in your pocket. The one a few years later will have a Terabyte of holo-ram for storage and connect to the global Gaea-net via nanometer neutrino waves.

Buy stuff that helps you get stuff done, or keeps you entertained after you've done the stuff... Sure something better is just around the bend. We live in miraculous times. Try to enjoy it.

The lack of a camera was the primary reason I didn't jump for an iPad when they came out initially.

If they'd have had a camera from the get-go I'm sure they never would have caught up with demand. "Very wise, them Jobians."

Wise? From the business standpoint, I guess. In my ideal world the best possible device would always be the one released, not one improved incrementally. I will the consider the iPad in it's Next iteration.

Of course they are coming sooner because how would Apple reach their target number of Facetime users that they announced when the iPhone was released. It won't be ipod touch creating the remainder of that number alone. Maybe in november with iOs4.2 I say

I rated this "negative" because I doubt Apple will release a significant upgrade within a year of the initial launch. They tried it with the first iPhone and got grilled (I was one of those early adopters who got the coupon). With all the other 'issues' of late, it might be shrewd to hold off on anything that is potentially bad press.

Gotta love the early adopters and beta testers :D
You're welcome. :)

Why?

If it does what I need, then why not? In my case, having the iPad has been wonderful as it does so much of what I need.

On a different note, I really pity you iPhone 4 owners. Soon the iPhone 5 will be released. And well, the iPhone 4 will be considered outdated. ;)

(Yes, I know the new iPhone, whatever it's called will be released next summer.)

Why?

Mine came day 1. If they replace it by Christmas, that's still about 8 months of use from this unit. That works out to basically be $0.50 a day. I easily had that much fun / work out of the unit each day, so I'm ahead of the game.

So you bought your iPad for about $240? I think you meant to say about $2 a day.....math fail :p

Got my original iPhone the week it came out, used it for 3 years (1 additional year before 3G users, and with all its cool aluminum back :) ). I believe it was the most durable iphone built. Recently upgraded to iPhone 4, even with all these bad reports (which again, is NOT there :) ).

Buying 1st gen has the *cool factor :) hehe

Okay, newsflash....Being too expensive is as irrelevant to talking about Apple products as khaki pants are to Steve Jobs. Apple almost never changes their prices, the only thing they do is upgrade the hardware from the previous year. Your post is the same typical vomit that everybody has been seeing for the past 2 months since the iPhone 4 came out.

You, and everybody else like you have to start thinking for yourselves and make your own decisions about companies and their products. Nobody is holding a gun to your head telling you to buy anything yet you bash other people that make their OWN decisions about their OWN finances.

As I've said before, if you are the type of person that wakes up in the middle of the night in a pool of sweat because the product you bought will soon be replaced with a better one then you either A) see a psychiatrist or B) start sorting out your priorities and make better decisions when it comes to buying things.

Technology is a rapidly evolving industry and when something gets released today it will be updated tomorrow and you might as well square with that sooner or later. These people buy 1st gen products because A) they can afford to pay for them or B) they will sell the product when it gets upgraded, buy the new one and consider the old one as having been rented for a year or C) don't give a flying **** about an update that is afoot and enjoy life.

So please can the self-righteous, bigoted comments and think about how you're going to save enough money so that by the time iPad 5th gen comes along you may just break even.
