I think it's conceivable that Apple might debut the rumored smaller iPads with facetime before x'mas. The smaller form factor might be just enough to differentiate it from the initial product and avoid pissing off the early adopters. Then in Q1 '11, update the old iPad to include facetime as well.

By introducing a feature in a new product in the lineup, users will feel less like they've been field testing a beta product for Apple. They'll just feel like they have a different device altogether. Kinda like how they split feature updates between the iPhone and Touches. Neither camp gets really pissed off about missing a feature that was just included in the other product. They know they'll get it if they just wait a little bit.

I will break it down for you all:

Facetime on the iPad is stupidity at its best. The only people that will be able to use Facetime realistically will be the ones that purchase a 3G model. Otherwise, think about it.....when would you possibly use the iPad for video conferencing?

You do realize that Facetime is Wi-Fi only, right?

PFFt!

What's there to test it'll run like butter just put the damn camera in on top/back where it was suppose to be added in the beginning and release it already. Christ on his throne apple what and who is running the show? Someone needs to get the dk out of their ass and start actually running the company. Give me a break and everyone else one too. Enough is enough!

...and this folks, is why I did not buy an iPad. Never buy 1st gen products.

a lesson to you all , NEVER BUY 1ST GENERATION APPLE PRODUCTS

as they haven't had enough real world testing and are too expensive with things missing that are later added by Apple (such as 3G to the iphone, sd card slot to macbooks/imacs, ios 4 to ipad, a working antenna to the iphone 4, blu -ray(?) and now a camera to the ipad).

Wait until 2nd Generation and look in amusement at the cool kids/wanna-be celebs lay down their rent money for the Apple product of the month.
Sometimes that's true perhaps, but not so with the iPad. To anyone who chuckled at Steve's "magical and revolutionary" description, let me ask you this: As you walked around this summer (parks, cafes & pubs, etc.), did folks turn their heads to gawk at your laptop? Did they slowly wander in your direction to get a closer look? I didn't think so. You wouldn't believe how many folks i wowed with this "1st gen" device. By the time i finished demoing Star Walk and SoundHound, they were literally drooling: "i'm definitely getting one of those!"

Besides, i didn't want any camera in my iPad. [as i type this message on my MBP now, i have the camera covered... just in case.] So i guess when i do upgrade my iPad (3rd gen perhaps), i'll probably *have* to get one with a camera. Oh well, so it goes. Meanwhile, i really had a great time with it all summer (and still do now, even just farting around in the living room).

Bottom line: best early-adoption experience ever.

Wow. People are SO mad that their precious iPad is going to be replaced by something better, that they're resorting to these insults. It's pathetic, really
Hmm, i didn't see any "insults" (and you didn't quote anyone, so...).

Perhaps some of those who waited are actually jealous then?

[whatever]

use for Facetime

We use iChat occasionally, but I agree, it is not a killer app. Think about how you have normal conversations. When I sit with my friends in a coffee shop I'm not staring at them eyeball-to-eyeball for the whole time. We are mostly looking around or maybe looking at documents. I think Facetime will be mostly used with the camera on the back of the device. It will be used to show people something.

"Which one of these do you want, the blue one or the red one?"

"I'm getting ready to ship you a spare part, is this the right one?"

and on and on.

good. sooner is better...held off on picking up an ipad since i've been waiting for a vid-cam-enabled one. will be great for the parents, too...

I feel it's quite sad if a new model be introduced by January when a lot of countries only got the rollout of the iPads on the second half of 2010.
Dude...that's the way the apple idiots make lots of money....alle the time the same ****. Do you think they were not able to integrate that already into the current ipad? They know exactly that there are enough stupid people who will buy a new and second ipad in 2011 just because of some small changes what they could have done already now. As long as there are enough idiots, they will continue with this ripoff business model.

A "Retina" display isn't the answer. The problem is a more basic one: resolution. And the reason that problem exists is because Apple opted for 4:3 over 16:9.

Apple needs to up to a scalable resolution that is sufficient to reproduce at least 720p HD video, a necessity if they're throwing in all the camera functions from the iPhone 4. That means they'll need a minimum 1280x960 resolution screen, which is an odd resolution. My guess is it might be very difficult to find someone who wants to mass produce that kind of screen at 9.7" but presumably they can convince someone to build one specifically for the iPad.

Why would the iPad even have a rear facing camera? Do people even think about this stuff or do they just read specs without drawing an image in their head about what it would look like or how it would function.

I've actually done quite a bit of thinking about this, and the lack of a rear camera on the iPad is why I didn't buy one. One of the features of my iPhone 4 that I find most interesting are the augmented reality features. Combined with the iPad's book format, I envision, say, an owner's manual for your lawnmower that uses shape recognition to outline the parts described in the text. Or a gardening application that identifies plants from their leaf shape and/or color. Or a museum guidebook that overlays video on the exhibits. Or a virtual telescope application. The latter two already exist on the iPhone, and would benefit greatly from the iPad's larger form factor. For work (political consulting firm) I'm developing an application that uses the iPhone's camera and would definitely benefit from the iPad's larger form factor (think intelligent clipboard).

I think perhaps you just haven't thought enough about the possibilities of a camera-equipped iPad.

I hear you, but with the big push for digital books don't you think a 16:9 screen would look a little funny? I saw the iPad as a multi-use tool. I thought the lack of a camera was interesting, but those things seem to be selling like crazy from what I read online. If they added a camera I would see the value. Maybe I know how technology changes so quickly that I would want to purchase at the beginning of the cycle to feel fulfilled.

Maybe they should offer a with or without camera edition. The without would be awesome if used in a business situation. Although if you were in charge of ordering, how cool would it be to be able to snap a photo of the barcode and order product?

So you bought your iPad for about $240? I think you meant to say about $2 a day.....math fail :p

Haha. Your math also failed. 8 mo x ~30 days/mo =~240 days x $0.50/day should be ~$120. :D

Right, and also I thought the whole point was that you could sell an iPad and lose $120 on the initial investment, and go spend the money you gained back from selling it on a new one. So basically your overall cost of usage (as of now) is only $120. Clearly it will get even cheaper at a "per day" cost as time goes on before the next one comes out.

It definitely would. But going forward is going to be difficult because I can guarantee you whatever companies are still making 4:3 LCD panels in 2010 will not be doing it in 2012, and 4:3 panels do not lend themselves easily to HD-quality resolution. (1280x960 isn't even a standard 4:3 resolution). At some point very soon (if it's not already true), the only 4:3 LCD panels on the market will be those custom designed for the iPad.

I would all but guarantee the next iPad is 1280x960 so that it can be officially labeled "HD quality." (The current iPad is not HD.) Apple might even trot out the "Retina" moniker. "Retina" is just a marketing ploy, after all.

Buy iPad the week it is introduced.

Enjoy the hell out of it for a full year.

Sell on ebay and get 75% of your money back or give to your wife.

Buy new model.

Lather, rinse, repeat in one year.

I wish Apple will create a camera accessory that will plug into the iPad port so that Facetime can be activated.

I feel it's quite sad if a new model be introduced by January when a lot of countries only got the rollout of the iPads on the second half of 2010.

That is what the marketing pukes called "an excellent third party opportunity."

Unless you are a pack rat and still have your 128K Faf Mac on top of your Mac Mini and have it networked via an AppleTalk to Ethernet bridge. Sadly, I know someone who did that and has even replaced the CRT of his Fat Mac by buying a used one on eBay a few years ago.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is closer to 17:10 than 16:9, but it too can't display unscaled 720p. Aspect ratio by itself doesn't mean much.

All these camera functions from the iPhone 4 work on a screen with even fewer pixels than the iPad.

1280x960 is not that odd a resolution. It's an option for my video card right now. There are several hundred other more oddball 4:3 ratios, like say 1176x882, or 1172x879, or... you get the idea.

I don't recall anyone doing 960x640 in volume, especially at 3.5 inches, but several million iPhone and iPod Touches are apparently enough to convince someone to do it. I suppose they're not selling quite as many iPads at the moment, but as you say there's probably enough volume to get someone to make whatever resolution 9.7 inch screen Apple wants (that hits their cost target).

This is why we all have laptops that stand up on their own etc. The iPhone is the only device that is the perfect size and fits the profile for a video conferencing device.

Rule 34 on the iPad Facetime within the first 12 hours after public release. Then it will be worth it!

hmmm

Facetime will be great,,,, but for those that buy the 3G model how much use will you get if it is allowed to stream over 3G? With your limited bandwidth plans? While us early adopters will transfer our unlimited data to our new device you will be stuck with 2GB Plan... so sad....

I got the point.

Exactly what I do. Pass it along to my wife or my sis.

iPads are pretty cool. I'd like one, but I just can't justify spending the money on one. And yes, if I could spend the cash now, I'd rather wait to buy a second gen, even if I could afford one. But I'm sure not going to criticize those of you who did buy a first gen iPad. Heck, if you bought one and enjoyed it, good for you! Seems to work as advertised, so you knew what you were getting into! I don't see a problem with that.

It's not like any of you bought one, brought it home and said, "What? It doesn't have a camera?" And nobody who bought one was dumb enough to think that Apple wasn't going to launch one with new improved features. It did what you wanted, so you bought it. No reason to insult your intelligence for that! :)
