god god, when a bose mini sound link goes for $180 new, there shouldn't even be a question. so much better sound, so much of an apple hardware 'match' in terms of form. i understand being young and getting into fads, but if you respect your music, stay away from beats pills. i can't vouch for the newer beats headphones, as i've heard they're a big step up, but the various BT speakers i've tried never seem to match up with the mini sound link.

no house fires yet either :)

I had the Bose SoundLink Mini, and I actually replaced it with the Beats Pill XL.... Sound is a very subjective thing, I actually found the Beats XL to be vastly superior to the Bose. However the 'regular' size Beats Pill doesn't sound good in a literal sense (bad distortion for example), especially gen 1. So I think that you are being a bit unfair to the Beats XL... although I do notice generally that it is 'hip' on internet forums to bash on Beats products for no good reason aside from it being Beats. Gets old pretty fast.

Don't quite understand your response to my post....I wasn't pointing out anything about the quality of these things. I was just saying you could buy one now for a discount price and then Apple will give you $325 for it. Was just pointing out an arbitrage opportunity.....

sorry, just building off what you mentioned, no insinuations about your opinions (stated or otherwise).

i was just surprised the beats pill costs so much, making a comparison.

true, i was getting into subjective/objective territory i usually try to avoid - my opinion is that the pill sounds like it's underwater, sound link sounds bright and 'present'. guess i'll have to take another listen, cause it's been about a year.

edit: just now noticing - i also thought this article was about the regular sized pil, regardless of blatant obviousness. totally my bad(!) ..smh

Just bought the JBL Charge 2 after being torn between this and the UE Boom and maybe the Bose Soundlink.
Beats Pill XL was said to be the worst thing that ever happened to Bluetooth-speaker-world. I have never heard it personally, but the amount of hate on it is amazing. Curious to find out if Apple can turn things around.

So in the UK my beats pill XL costs £270 and Apple are going to give me £215 back for it. They better have another look at their maths.

My mistake. I replied you incorrectly. You should check out their website to see what amount you would be receiving. As long as you have your receipt to prove what you paid for it you should be good. Otherwise you're going to get the standard listed amount.

Apple today announced a voluntary recall of all Beats Pill XL speakers due to the rare possibility that the battery in the speakers may overheat and pose a fire safety risk. Apple advises all customers to stop using the Beats Pill XL speakers and will issue a $325 refund or Apple Store credit to affected customers. The recall does not extend to other Apple or Beats products.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission notes that the recall applies to about 222,000 Beats Pill XL speakers sold in the United States from January 2014 through June 2015, while Health Canada says that approximately 11,000 units were sold in Canada. Apple received eight reports of incidents of the speakers overheating, including one that burned a customer's finger and one that burned a customer's desk.Beats Pill XL speakers were introduced by Beats by Dre in November 2013, prior to Apple acquiring the company in 2014, and are sold in five colors: black, metallic sky, pink, titanium and white. Apple will issue refunds to affected customers approximately three weeks after receiving the returned Beats Pill XL speakers in a postage paid box.

Maybe it's just me but it's shaped kind of like a suppository....

I just tried to buy some online that I found at a good price and someone literally beat me to it by seconds. Bought all three right before I pressed the submit order button. Looks like multiple people see the opportunity.

My God. You should count that as a blessing! You get your $300 back for that ugly, overpriced P.O.S. Please go and spend that money over at Libratone or anywhere else and get something that looks and sounds nicer please.

'Because customer safety is the company's top priority, Apple is asking customers to stop using their Beats Pill XL speakers.'

I look forward to the day when companies stop making hyperbolic and dishonest statements.

I could kill someone with my iPhone. Don't recall Apple recalling it as a consequence.

This is such an idiotic and childish post.

Good. Way too many bros like to use these in public spaces and force me to listen to their bad taste in music.
No uglier than the iPod HiFi, or the amazingly good quality B&O stuff that's out now. Most people don't buy speakers for the look you know.

I dunno, I thought the iPod HiFi looked pretty nice. Clean design and professional looking. The B&O Beolit 15 looks much better than all of them and no doubt sounds far better. But the Beats Pill is just crap looking, IMO.

I agree with a previous poster about the unnecessary bashing of beats products. I wonder how many people here have actually tried them out and/or compared them to a different product, or are you just jumping on the band wagon? I have the "regular" sized beats pill at home and love it. Not sure why people are complaining about the design. It's lightweight, small, portable and can fit it easily into a back pack, back pocket, etc. Why so much hate? I honestly wonder if they changed only the name on the label how many people would like these products.

but that's the point. Most of the time I put the speaker down, send music to it, and never look at it again.

Much of them look relatively the same save for the stuff B&O makes. Now, I wouldn't put anything made by Beats in the same category as B&O, Sennheiser, or even Harman Kardon.

As for them catching fire . . . . let's not forget how many Sony, Dell, Apple, and HP products had to recalled not too long ago for the same reason.

That's how I feel. I think they have their place. I have listened to all of the beats products as well as a lot of other bluetooth speakers, and while some of them do sound terrible, the studio headphones are very enjoyable to listen to, and I think the Pills sound awesome with certain genres of music. As for the design being ugly, it literally looks like a pill? I think it's kind of cool. It's far more portable than other portables out there, seeing as it has a handle and/or fits in the hand well.

The Studio's may be called studio but that's really not where they're best. If I wanted to pick up a pair of comfortable headphones and jam out, they'd certainly be a go-to.That being said, the only reason I am considering the Studios as a viable option is because I can get them half off.
