This question is aimed at those who bought an iPhone X: What has it done for you that the iPhone 8 cannot do?

Screen yes others no. So maybe 15-20% of the cost which means Samsung is making $5 profit off each iPhone while apple makes $600.

Not so sure you're right....but hey ho nothing wrong with some dodgy maths [a UK word] to help your argument eh. Apple don't make anywhere near that amount of "Profit" per phone....more like a third of that at best, as profit.

In terms of what Samsung makes on each iPhone, who knows, but I promise you it is way more than $5; there was an article on here a few months back speculating that Samsung actually make more money supplying components for iPhones, than selling their Galaxy phones. Their mobile division has being doing very well for the last year or so, even taking into account their Note 7 issue [not "Apple levels of well" bit far better than any other Android supplier]

Better camera, better display that actually display true HDR/DV and 120Hz touch sensitivity, aniemoji (sp?), better design (316 SS band and all display), smaller size yet still have dual camera (X vs. 8+).

I didn't ask what was better (though I think many of those better things are not really better and others are subjective), I asked what it has done for you that you could not do with the iPhone 8.

- take shake free pictures with both lenses
- authenticate with wet and dirty hands without typing in your passcode
- avoid oled burn in etc

The question as posed could apply to any line of technology. What can you do with a galaxy s8 you can’t do with a galaxy s6? What can you do in an s class you can’t do in a genesis? Etc

Neither of those are things you cannot do. I have no problems taking shake free pictures with my iPhone 6 or Galaxy S7. Not sure how authentication does anything for you. I've been authenticating with non FaceID phones and have not had a problem with it.

Yes, you are right...the question applies to more than just the iPhone X. I have an iPhone 6 because it does everything I need it to do. I have a Galaxy S7 because the GS8 doesn't do anything for me that my GS7 can't do. I don't plan to buy a GS9 for the same reason.

I inquired about the iPhone X merely because of its higher price compared to the iPhone 8. Is the iPhone X a more capable phone? I think it is. But I'm curious as to what it does for owners that an iPhone 8 (or even an older iPhone) cannot. I'm sure there are some people where it has benefit. However I feel they're a much smaller group than the number sold.

I thought that my answers were pretty good. If you cannot see why X is BETTER and more CAPABLE resulting in better experience, then go get the 8.

I'm not looking to buy either one. I'm just curious what a $1K smart phone can do for a buyer that the $700 smart phone can't. The couple of responses I have received haven't answered that.

I'd also like to reiterate I'm not knocking the iPhone X or those who purchase them. I'm the buy whatever you want for whatever reason you want.

Keep your 6 then. It should be fine.

The answer wasn’t worded properly. The second lens of the iPhone X has ois. So if you were to take a video and use the second lens while traveling in a car the video would be more or less shake free. Try the same thing on an iPhone 8 and the video would be a shakefest.

Whether or not this has any value is an individual determination.

It is, which is why I don't have a 6S, 7, or 8 ;)

Exactly. I would say for most people the lack of OIS (on the 8, I believe the 8+ has it) is not an issue.

I can’t make the determination for anyone but myself. Having said that I would want ois in the second lens. The thing holding me back though is oled. Apple does not produce a phone with “my” specs, the 8/8+ doesn’t have ois on the second lens.

FYI, the 8 has OIS on the one camera that it has. The 8+ has OIS on the main camera, but no OIS on the telephoto lens. X has OIS on both lenses.

What’s wrong with OLED in the X that is holding you back?

ois is a nice to have but I would say for the vast majority of iPhone X owners it hasn't done anything for them.

Assuming much??? It allows for better pictures AND videos AND portraits. And it allows for better pictures at night with telephoto. I think that i read somewhere that telephoto lens at night is used more on X than 8+ because of OIS. (In 8+, Apple software switches to digital zoom.)

I use all of the above quite often. I find it funny that you are making so many assumptions (and denying clear benefits of X). Suck it up and get the X. No need torture yourself and lie to yourself.

Yes, I am assuming. Why? Because when I asked what it does for people the only answers I've received have been along the lines of a features list. Thus far I haven't received any answer where it actually solved a problem they were having.

Better pictures is not a good answer? Better viewing experience not good either? Small size yet still have the power of dual cameras not good enough?

So, why did you get the 6? Gosh, you spent plenty back then to get something that didn’t really solve any “problem” either.

What did S7 have that S6 or S5 couldn’t do?

So, you won’t upgrade until the iPhone actually solves world hunger? LOL. Keep waiting dude.

Oled gives me a headache and eye strain.

OIS advantages, some of which were already posted, offer clear benefit to the photographer or videographer. Whether you believe YOU will get any benefit from OIS is your call. my current phone doesn’t have ois and a big benefit is low light photography.

But I don’t know how the “masses” feel about ois nor, IMO, does anybody.

Smart phone cameras have been good for quite some time. I doubt, yes I am making an assumption here, you would have an issue with pictures taken with an iPhone 8. Better viewing experience? What does that mean?

Why did I get the 6? Because it was the iPhone which was available when I went to purchase an iPhone. Why do I have an GS7? It replaced my GS6 because it had a larger capacity battery and it is weather proof. IOW the GS7 solved a real world issue I was having with my previous phone.

As for upgrading either phone I won't do so until the replacement solves a problem or fills a void my current phones do not.

Agreed. Which is why I earlier said I'm sure there are some who do benefit from the features. However I haven't heard from anyone who said "I was having a problem with blurry pics and the OIS on the iPhone X has helped reduce blurriness in my pics". Instead I get "It has OIS on both lenses" as if they're just going down the feature list.

Unless you're a stock holder why are most of the commentators here so happy to pay kind of monopolistic prices?

Its so funny and telling how sooo many people here are always demanding better specs: always want more ram, bigger batteries, better displays... etc etc. people are aleays complaining that it isnt good enough. Then they complain about prices.
Having said that.... the X is too expensive. It will come down next model.

I know this is anecdotal but the people I know haven't been wanting anything other than longer battery life. I can't recall the last time someone said they wanted more speed nor have they said the display on the current phones needs improvement. I'm not saying people don't like these things, just that they haven't been asking for them.

Yes, i prefer the dual lenses because i film my son playing flag football and it is VERY NICE to have the zoom lens that is stabilized for video. I cannot do that on your 6 or the 8. I can do that on the 8+ but the zoom video will be shaky because telephoto lens NEEDS OIS more than regular lens. (This coming from someone who had iPhone 7+)

Better viewing experience? X OLED supports TRUE HDR10/Dolby Vision; thus, movies viewed thru X display are FREAKING AWESOME. Your 6 is not even close...and cannot view such content. The 8/8+ does support HDR10/DV but it is watered-down and not true to what HDR10/DV can provide in terms of dynamic range and brightness.

The X OLED also supports 120Hz touch sensitivity...partly because it relies more on gestures but also helps with basically every time you touch the screen to interact with it.

Weather proof that important to you? Much cheaper to get a waterproof case. From what i hear, GS7 battery life is not that much better than GS6. YMMV

For me, the X camera has REAL-WORLD added capability not seen in your 6 or 8/8+. The X OLED again has REAL-WORLD added capability to better enjoy my movies.

(Oh, and the 4K 60Hz video recording is a game-changer in REAL WORLD. But 8/8+ can do this too.)

Visit any thread discussing the iPhone camera and posters will discuss ois. You may not hear about ois from your friends in casual conversation but the technology offers clear benefits to anyone using then camera on the X, whether or not they even know ois exists. Apple thought it important enough to include that hardware on both lenses on the x.

Some people like the latest and greatest in tech and others don’t care. It’s hard or near impossible to explain to a person who doesn’t care about the latest in consumer tech why that tech is beneficial.

BTW, once you view Mad Max (via HDR10/DV) on X, you will think everything is like the old tube TV! :D
