True, but let's not forget that you'll still need some 2D/3D animation via After Affects and DVD authoring via Encore. I loved Avid, my first NLE, and they are still the kings, but the price does jump up there for ownership of the king NLE software.

You're totally right... but you get what you pay for. Running Media Composer and the Adobe Production Suite is a pretty bangin' setup for me! ;)

Sony Socratto was a very polished product and the crew was very enthusiastic.
I was part of the beta program. They really wanted to make it happen
and they were trying very hard. And then, one morning,
mister Sony decided it makes more sense to sell more playstations
than continue with a pro product. Sounds familiar?
No, it doesn't. While I do have some concern I do not see where this applies to Apple. Sony was innovative and they had a vision, but lately they screw everything - the new PSP, their DSLRs, etc. Hardly comparable to Apple.

Didn't you see the MacBook Pro in the last year or two?
What about them?

Oh, didn't you hear? They aren't Pro anymore. I mean, they don't have Core i3's! Never mind that the Intel IGP can't run Motion or Color, or do OpenCL anything. BUT WAIT! Some PC maker has a machine with discrete graphics and a 13.3" screen! Meaning there is totally room for a discrete card on here:

OH BROTHER PREACH IT! Even when I first set foot on FCP way back in 2003 I knew it wasn't better than that setup (which by the way I am working to go back to anyhow) but it was just cheaper and easier to get running.

People still ask what kind of Mac they need to run FC and I keep telling them any other them. I ran it on an iBook G4 back in the day. It's a very fluid program.

But when it comes to raw power, especially not needing to render when you have mixed media in the timeline or with the MOJO Avid just blows you away. You really get a feel for the little imperfections that are still in Final Cut Pro.

Jobs commenting on something to do with the Mac?

It's been nothing but blanket iPhone, iPad, iPhone OS for months.

I watched the 2007 Macworld keynote the other night, the one when the iPhone was unveiled, and when watching it you see it's a massive turning point for Apple.

Jobs opened with chat about Intel processors, Mac sales, iTunes and then eventually got round to the iPhone.

Ever since then, it's been keynote after keynote about the iPhone and/or iPad.

To me, Apple will always be about the Mac regardless of me owning an iPhone and loving it. The fact they took "Computer" out their name remains a kick in the teeth to people who knew and loved the company before the celebrity boom that followed the iPhone and see's Apple logos whored all over **** like The Hills, Runs House, and any other American show aimed at teenagers.

They're probably going to have an option to dumb down the layout and interface just like in DVD Studio Pro

I for one Do NOT want a tab for color grading! editing and color grading are 2 separate jobs!!

If my memory serves me well, Shake was rumored to be included with FCS 3.0... I cannot find the icon in my copy!! :p and we all know what NUKED!! that program.

Prefer send to stand alone program... No more TABS!

Editing and Color ARE two separate jobs currently but there's no real reason why they couldn't live together better than they do. Furthermore, you've already got 'tabs' in Color - the rooms are essentially TABS which step you through a workflow - why have two timelines in two different apps?

What difference would it make to you if there was a master Colour TAB at the bottom of the screen and then all the ROOM tabs at the top of Color's sub screen?

Personally if it avoids the tedious round-tripping out of FCP, into Color, then back again (which can be a hassle with iterations) then I'm all for it.

With the greatest respect we have actually no idea what kind of amazing UI is possible with NLE's if Apple really sat down and thought about it. I'm pretty sure Apple aren't going to just screw up a million user FCS marketplace.

If Apple Scales back FCP that means over half of our users will switch to PC's and use another program such as Premier. This is not good news at all. You can't tell people who use FCP for business that the new FCP is "magical" because they will tell you to F off.

I don't see why people would switch to a PC when they can just as easily get Premiere on their already purchased Mac.

Lack of performance. With the new Blackmagic Da Vinci colouring software if you want proper grunt you need to upgrade to Linux.

Then with After Effects CS5 if you want to max it out you need a PC as there is a limit on RAM with the MAC.

I remember when everyone on this website called my a troll for stating my opinion that the mac was turning into one of these.

lol love it. Anyone who's criticizing you needs to stop drinking the Apple kool-aid. Simple is good, but there is such a thing as moderation.

I haven't looked at Avid for a while, but, isn't it at least twice as much as FCS?

The latest shipping version of Avid Media Composer is only $2495 and come with 5 3rd Party apps, including Boris Continuum Complete & Sorenson Squeeze. Or you can just purchase the Media Composer as a Download for $2295. I'd personally go for the bundle for only $200 more.

And with the new features and improvements, QT AMA, Support for ProRes, 3rd Party hardware, etc., coming in the recently announced V5, scheduled to ship in the next couple of weeks, Avid is worth it. Here's more info on whats new.

Avid also has a 30day free trial available @ http://bit.ly/aGNXqR I'd wait till 5.0 ships and then download the free trail and give it a shot.

Avid also has several really strong communities going right now were you can find other Avid users:
Community.avid.com,
http://www.facebook.com/avidmediacomposer
http://twitter.com/mediacomposer

You'll frequently find Avid employees posting on these lists & forums, helping out the users. Rarely find that on FCP sites.

For my money, with Version 5 of Media Composer, Avid has, hands down, the best Non-linear editor in the field.

And what's stopping these people from using the older version of Final Cut Pro if the new one sucks? Absolutely nothing.

I'm betting a lot will switch to Avid especially if Avid is clever enough to use the opportunity when they release the MC5. After the current Macs are old, used and abused its relatively small step to switch to PC since both Mac and Pc versions are included. Its sad but true. My company has spent insane amounts of money on Apple hardware and software over the years but if Apple can't deliver then I have no problem to switch. What bothers me the most it seems Apple doesn't even want to compete in professional media production level. Refocussing FCP would be really really sad... I hope they at least have guts to call it something else then Final Cut Pro. How pathetic is that Apple got Emmy by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for the contributions that Final Cut Pro has made to the profession of film editing and now they want to dumbed it down...

So you mean switching to PC mode on a MAC?

Apple have a great skill at making you upgrade to new software. Either by making old software not work on the new hardware in the case of the intel switch or not having legacy support with the software. Also when new codecs come out they are generally not supported by the older software.

Last I checked Rosetta still exists for download and the Intel switch was a rare switch in the platform that likely won't/ever happen again for a very long time.

:)Again, the idiots in this post call themselves "PROFESSIONALS" HA. Interesting how no one complained when AVID "DUMBED DOWN PROTOOLS TO BE MORE LIKE LOGIC 8". DID PROTOOLS USERS RUN TO LOGIC? NO.
SO Then WTF difference does it make if the interface is more user friendly. Your scared that the 20 year old graduating college, maybe gunning for your job, then PRODUCE QUALITY CONTENT THEN. Otherwise stop being a cry-baby and go use "AVID/PINNACLE/VEGAS" or whatever product, and don't use FCP. Apple doesn't need "crybaby" wanna-be professionals in the community! :D

Wait wait wait...who are you? What "quality content" have you turned out?

Your pretty quick to throw out the name calling. I never said I was a pro. But you've made it very clear that your some quick-tempered, rash, "crybaby."

This "community" you speak of, doesn't need hot heated crybabies like yourself either.

From this years NAB the message is let as many third party software run a on mac.

With Smoke and now Da Vinci running on a Mac it really looks like they want to let more specialised software makers make it for them. At the end of the day Mac sell boxes and that is where the fat profits are. All Apple software is heavily discounted to sell the computer.

PCI X was a fun one with everything not being supported.

Lack of new codecs. FCP in its current form is starting to slip back and apparently Avid MC5 will be great for FCP editors.

Drag and Drop Video and Audio to Edit
Get comfortable — with Media Composer 5, you can truly edit the way you like. In addition to the standard way of editing, you can also now directly manipulate elements in the timeline to edit video and audio. Drag and drop clips anywhere you want on the timeline to rearrange sequences. And grab a clip’s in or out point and drag to trim a scene, dialog, or music.

This is all assuming that the next Final Cut Suite will somehow suck due to a single line response Steve Jobs gave.

Clearly these people don't have any problem with Final Cut Pro apparently "slipping back"

Uh? Intel change over, PCI x all those make it quite difficult to run FCP 5 or even 6.

So if you are going to stick with old software it's going to be a loosing battle. Half of my edit suites need new hardware to upgrade to FCP 7. And then if a client comes by with his FCP project on 7 I can't let him use those edit suites as it won't read the file. Can't run a business with old software.

I've been using Final Cut Pro since v.1.0 (got the t-shirt to prove it, yeah I'm a loser) and I'm all for an FCP rewrite. The weakest points of the app have been the same for as long as I can remember and I'm surprised it runs as well as it does today. Don't get me started on some of the things that drive me crazy, but overall it's such an incredible tool.

Apple is a hardware seller and I'm thinking a rewired FCP will actually renew interest in the Mac Pro line. Imagine how many 8-core machines Apple could sell if one of its flagship applications could actually make use of that hardware.

I really hope they re-work the Suite as a whole. Roundtripping to Color and back is killing me when finishing complicated projects on a deadline. If only they could integrate these applications into a single unit somehow. I also find it encouraging that Randy is on the team. Afterall, unless I'm mistaken, isn't he the one that gave birth to FCP's UI in the first place? More power to you, Apple. I'm ready for a change and can't wait to see what's coming next.
