I hope the UI becomes 400% customizable, a la Maya, and they drop some "UI Configuration Templates" for newbies, so you can configure it more consumer oriented, but also available to keep the PRO interface.
Too much to ask for something unrelated to raw performance/functionality?
Not too much to ask :) A la Maya would be great (just not that ugly). With ready-to-go templates for newbies.

I miss shake. Apple missed a big opportunity with Shake. Now that nuke has blasted to the forefront to fill the void left by Shake, apple really cant hope to recover that lost ground. If they do this with Final Cut, which from outward appearances, they have been, there wont be much left in the Apple Pro segment. I know from experience Nuke and the Adobe apps alll run great on both platforms, nuke on all 3, because of that there isnt much of a reason to keep buying mac pros.

Shake was great. Many people still use it. But I think if Apple reintroduces it, they will have a good adoption.
Aperture for example had 6% market share in 2009, and this with it being mac-only.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I use it every day all day to make my living. It works great and each new release adds features and stability. Please don't revamp it with EPIC SUCK.

I'll see what happens because as much as I was looking at getting FCE I was going to take the bigger plunge and get FCP. After trying to use iMovie as of late, I think the current iMovie sucks beyond belief compared to iMovie HD and the last thing I want to do is have someone else sell me something that I have to dumb myself down to the rest of the population just so they can have better sales. I'm hoping that isn't the case here but the new Apple theme is how to innovate dereliction and pass it off on all others.
I'll wait and see how awesome it may or may not be…

I doubt they will drop features or "dumb" it down, but then again, I couldn't believe what they did to iMovie '08. I still use iMovie HD '06 anytime I need to do something quick, like a photo montage.

I also echo everyone in hoping they will not downgrade FCP. Think of all the schools, production, broadcast, and film companies who use FCP as a industry standard. I doubt they will lose that user base...

But then again, Apple does seem like it is on the sad downfall of all consumer mobile devices for the majority of people, and not the creative individuals who basically built and kept the company alive.

Don't screw this up Apple!

I'm still using Final Cut 5 because of cost. I know I really should upgrade, but threads like this make me want to wait it out.

And I don't think making it easier to use is a bad thing, but the second I see any 'effects', I might go Adobe.

And the reason FCE sells so well is because iMovie '08/'09 are useless.
Although to be honest, I never really liked HD 6 for myself, but at least it had a timeline.

Maybe it will FINALLY support Blu-ray. Nothing pro about it if they don't get onboard with the de-facto (physical) HD media format. I can get Blu-ray support in an Acer, but not as an option on a Mac Pro. And I can author a Blu-ray with Adobe, but not in FCP. There was a time when Apple was the leading edge in the creative world, now they lag in this area. The quality difference isn't enough if the high quality product can't produce the media that a Sony, Dell or Acer can. Apple is about the only manufacturer I am aware of now with no option to even play a Blu-ray.

Holding my breath for June.

Last Release was a Lame Upgrade, too!

This news is actually not that surprising.

Apple does not care that much anymore about the pros out there.

Whatever happened to the next greatest app that was going to take the place of shake?

Whatever happened to the "year of HD" that never materialized. Heck, we are still waiting for Apple to provide Blu-Ray.

And the Macbook "Pro"s that were just released - as Digital Skunk has pointed out - is really just middle of the road.

Heck, even Dell has better screens right now.

And the last FCS release was a joke... and now we have to wait for what looks like to be a disaster of a release. Ouch!

Plus, the news that they took people off the Mac OS team to put them on the igadget team.

And Apple becoming an evil corporate empire - where can I turn to?

Apple is no longer your friend!

This info is FAR to vague to really infer much from.

My guess: It'll be like DVD Studio Pro's current modes. You can alter that program to be very complex or very simple. I bet Final Cut will get something similar...turn on 'Advanced' for the current look or switch to 'Express' and it looks like Final Cut Express.

Hell, it can even have an 'i' mode where it LOOKs like iMovie but still retains its ability to use more advanced codecs.

I'd have no problem with a program that can be scaled "up" and "down" like that. It would be a useful feature, actually. Some Final Cut computers get used with many individuals with a wide range of experience.

Here's hoping it's something like this and not something worse.

(My other guess involves Final Cut Express being cancelled, Final Cut Studio dropping its price to $499 and some new "Final Cut Extreme with Shake built in" coming out that costs $1,999.)

same thoughts I was having. two modes or a scale down (for like $500) with plugins you can add for more advance things. perhaps even a master collection version with all those goodies already (for the current $1000). 64 bit and yes I'd like to see Shake back in that. I'd also like to see them basically has one app or due like ilife where they have a common ui and easily shift media back and forth.

also folks, with tons of prod cos using FCS and things like 9 of the 10 documentary Oscar noms on record as being made with FCS, do you really think Apple is going to screw up that market.

I think this news is good, that Steve said they do still care about the professional market. About the dumbing down part; first of all this is just speculation by some blogger/website, not set in stone. They know just as much we do. I agree, iMovie 08 was a step down in features from iMovie 06, but they fixed that in iMovie 09. If they make Final Cut Express easier to use, they probably will not be removing features in the process. It might even help you get things done faster.
And the speculation about it getting dumbed down only referred to Final Cut Express, not Final Cut Pro. So Final Cut Pro users shouldn't be worried. Although I am worried that people are taking some blogger's speculation so seriously.

Apple's new target demographic.

I have to say, this news is rather disheartening. I've been following this Final Cut Studio saga for a long time now, and I've had a really bad feeling that something like this was going to happen. Initially I was worried Final Cut would be dissolved (i.e. Shake), but I emailed Steve asking if FCS's future was safe and he responded as was quoted in this article. Now it seems Final Cut will remain, but turn into a program for soccer moms and wannabe teen filmmakers, rather than the professionals who use it now, such as Francis Ford and the Coen Brothers. While I hope the rumor is bogus, I'm pretty convinced it's not, knowing AI's track record. Hopefully, rather than being a radical re imagining, little consumer tidbits are sprinkled in as bonus, while the core of the pro software remains.

At this point, it's in God's hands. God and Steve Jobs. And the wretched Randy Ubillos.

Even if you believe Apple insider, it said only Final Cut Express will be dumbed down, not Final Cut Studio/Pro.
And even if it FCS was dumbed down, it probably won't be removing features, rather, making easier to access them, or making it easier for them to be applied properly to a project.

Maybe Apple will do something similar as to what they did with Logic Pro. They cut the price in half and they certainly didn't dumb it down in any way.

I'm a music guy, not a video guy and I don't use Final Cut Pro, but if Steve Jobs says that the next release will be awesome, then I will believe him, in absence of reliable evidence to the contrary.

What if the next FCP is drastically cut in price, is 64 bit and multi-core aware and even more powerful than it is today? What will you people say then? I don't really see them dumbing down one of the most popular PRO apps that they have and taking away features, that makes no sense at all. We shall see who is correct soon enough.

:)

I'm a certified FCP editor and if they dumb down FCP, I'm going Avid.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I know Final Cut Pro like the back of my hand and it's a fantastic program. I'm all for new features, but the new iMovie is a disaster and if anything like that happens to Final Cut, there's no way I'd be able to deal with it.

While this doesn't affect me at all, I would highly recommend to those of you who rely on this to make a big of fuss now as possible.

Email, call, kick down doors, do what it takes... because once it gets downgraded to prosumer status upon release its not going back up.

While you're at it, all of the logic people should also be throwing a **** fit, as they're next.

Apple is said to be revamping their Final Cut Pro product to appeal to a more mainstream audience rather than high end professionals. After layoffs in 2007, Apple has reportedly reorganized the Final Cut Pro team under the lead of Randy Ubillos, the developer who completely redesigned iMovie in 2008. The new iMovie was drastic departure from the original iMovie codebase.

nooo, this sounds terrible.

I know FCE/P isn't the easiest to learn, but I like it.
