hmm - would catch a lot of people out that would not have contracts expiring until September. But maybe they reset 'normal' iphones to June (and future normal ipads); then in fall they have the 'X' range - iphones and ipad pros with higher end tech?

It could be that there's a lot of pent up demand with a fair few people on the 6 and 6S series who didn't upgrade when they saw the 7 or 8 as they didn't offer anything meaningfully new.

I guess though, we just don't know how many people are using these old devices and will probably upgrade given a big enough jump in form factor, screen, camera. Apple probably has a pretty good idea though!

I suspect that an affordable 'X' device with FaceID and no home button etc. will trigger an upgrade 'super-cycle'.

And it shouldn't have been too hard for them to combine the innards of the 8 with the design of the X and make the LCD screen a little bit bigger (i.e. no home button).

When the first iPhone came out, I knew I wanted one. It did so many things that I'd wanted my cell phone to do. In the first few models that followed that, more useful features were added, making iPhones more appealing.

But now? Year after year, Apple brings out new models that offer nothing new of value. You see that in the list of possibilities for these new phones. It's all about screens and charging. How ridiculously meaningless. A little bigger or a little smaller matters little. And the Lightning connector works so well that starting recharging takes perhaps a second longer than placing it on a wireless pad.

How about real improvements Apple. How about an EL for Extended Life model with twice the battery life for those on the go. How about a Sport model that's ruggedized to Milspecs like many of today's digital devices? How about building in an SDR chip that'd give iPhones world-ready TV and radio reception? How about a system that'd screen out spam calls, my #1 irritation?

No, all we get from Apple is the removal of useful items like ports, the addition of silly stuff like that laptop ribbon, and the addition of features that make no difference in actual use like visual ID. Its grown so bad, that the last genuinely useful feature that Apple added to any of its products was TouchID years ago.

Is that sad or pitiful? Probably both. Genuine innovation has deserted Apple.
I don’t understand posts like this. Apple has been objectively improving iPhones steadily every year, especially when it comes to screens. The difference between LCD and OLED is (literally) night and day. The home bar is objectively faster at navigating iOS than the home button.

As for essentially everything else you’ve mentioned, that’s never happening. Apple’s market doesn’t want rugged durable devices. It seems like you want Apple to be a company they’re not.

The hyperbole that TouchID is the last useful feature that Apple has added needs to end.

I think they’d go with the A11 at this point so they don’t have to upgrade it for 2+ years like they’ve done with the current SE. Imagine if that phone shipped with the A8 - it would’ve been updated by now, which would mean R&D and many other expenses to release and market the mild spec updated new device. If the strategy is still to keep this as the budget phone, they won’t set it up for annual updates.

As others have said, too many SKU’s for this to just be an SE update. I know the filing specifies smartphones, but I really hope there’s an iPad Mini 5/Pro in there. That would be a sure buy for me, with an SE2 a probably buy. Could be an expensive month for me.

I see people on here with wishlist items for their SE2, like keeping the same body style, TouchID over FaceID, etc. And that is completely fine. Maybe I’ve just gotten desperate, but am I the only one who is much less picky at this point? I just want the size, and yeah, I want the internals updated of course, but I don’t care which method of security it uses, if the bezels double in size, or if the back of the phone is lumpy—I just want a small phone that smoothly runs iOS for a few years.

Model numbers and typically SKU are not the same things for Apple, Model numbers covers various storage memory sizes and colors, but having a SKU for each. For Apple you would refer eg. MLXQ2CH/A as a SKU.

Other than that who knows what will be the reason for so many model numbers, it could be different LTE bands, by using cheaper chips which are more dedicated to local markets.

If they do release an iPhone SE 2 (which is most likely what this registered iPhone is), I hope they keep the same body.
I hope the size stays the same but less bezel and chin is a must these days.

OK, acting dumb here .... is there anything in that document that states these have to all be phones? Could some be iPads?
Maybe new watchbands with health technology :D

I would love to see a new SE, that is the one thing that might get me to upgrade before my current phone dies.

Please release a 256GB iPhone SE, or something cheap but with 256GB storage in it, I want to have a tiny portable music device.:p
For this goal alone Apple should ad a flash card reader. Also dual sim. Especially here in Europe where you can be in a different country in about 25 miles (yes the Netherlands is a small country).

My iPhone SE is 64gb.

Bought at release.

If my memory is correct, it was released as 16 and 64 gb models, and these were refreshed to 32 and 128..?
Yes, there was 64GB on original launch as the next storage tier, but the point is the article said the base is 64GB, while in fact Apple never made the baseline SE 64GB. I mean why would it surpass the base storage of the 6S & 7?

Give me an iPhone X SE in a 5" body with 1080p OLED display, A11 processor, and the iPhone X features for $599. Basically a Pixel 2 with iOS and FaceID.

But too few for iPads as they’d need eg
pro 10.5 64/256/512 WiFi, 64/256/512 WiFi+LTE
pro 12.9 64/256/512 WiFi, 64/256/512 WiFi+LTE
That’s 12 skus not including phones or iPad mini. Doesn’t quite add up, unless it’s a partial filing?

Too many SKUs!
I see people complain about this often, but don't understand it. From a customer perspective, why is the number of SKUs an issue? Wouldn't having the choice of multiple phones be more beneficial? How is this a negative?
No focus on innovation.
What innovation do you want to see in the smartphone space? Honest question, no sarcasm intended.

It's going to be really interesting to see if they still keep 32GB as the entry level model for the SE2 and 9 series (if it's called that).

I suspect yes.

Many people just want a few apps and to carry a few photos and videos on the phone plus a bit of music. For that 32GB is more than enough.

Not to mention that many people are really budget conscious. Even if you're middle class in a developing world country, the SE is still a pretty expensive device for you.

I wonder then what the SKUs are for the SE2?:

  • 32/64/256?
  • 32/128/256?
  • 32/128/256?
64GB is probably the sweet spot for most people in 2018 so I'm hoping that 32/64/256 will be the SKUs i.e.

  • 32 (budget conscious/just wants a new phone to use and carry a few photos, a few pieces of music, shoot a video or two and have a few apps on them)
  • 64 - most people & thus the highest selling phone (enough storage not to care about/manage how much photos, videos and music are on the device, at a reasonable enough price)
  • 256 - power users, most expensive device but hey, these people need to shoot lots of 4k video and/or carry around their entire photo and music library around with them plus a tonne of downloaded Netflix videos. Oh and about 100 apps)

Come on, 32GB enables more than "a few" pieces of music, photos and video...
The average Hard drives until 2004 was smaller than 32GB and you had bloated desktops and desktop apps on that.
Most people will be streaming music, photos and storing their videos in the cloud.

What you need 64GB for is apps bloat (and all their data).

I've got a 64GB 6s and I'm about at 32GB and that's while not really removing anything since I bought it 2 years ago.
People often think they need more space than they actually use (and phone companies exploit this by upselling you the next level).

Well damn I was looking to buy a new iPhone X soon because I couldn't wait for an SE any longer.

That is only according to you. However please then show us all how it is done and I will sit and judge you and your efforts. I will lambast them for not being able to scratch my bum from space with a laser.

11 model numbers for an iPhone SE? OK SURE.
  • iPhone SE 2 in 32/128GB
  • iPad Pro 10.5" in 64/256/512GB
  • iPad Pro 12.9" in 64/256/512GB
  • iPad Mini or iPod Touch in 32/128/256GB
Otherwise, if Apple releases all new iPhone models in the summer I hope they allow us upgrade program customers to upgrade early. I wouldn't mind getting a better version of Face ID early. I just don't see that happening, though.

except that it does not relate to anything other than smartphones. Not iPads etc.

If by some miracle this filing actually does cover iPads too (I know it specifies smartphones), I’d guess it would be the Mini only and the Pros will be done separately a little later in the year like Jun or Sep. All wishful thinking on my part really, I just want a new freaking mini already!

Exciting, but 11 seems like a really high number of model numbers for only one iPhone? iPhones usually have at most 3-4 models which differ only in cellular modems and/or cellular band support. Not sure what to make of this.

But because it’s this late into the cycle, will it have an A11 or just an A10?

I guess an A10, otherwise it would make the iPhone 6 they still sell look even more outdated.
I would guess an A11.
When the SE was released it had the same A9 chip of the 6S which was the current model back then.

I kind of want the same thing, but isn't that already here? The current SE is just as fast as my wife's 8. I want a little more than small size and a speed bump. I want the same physical size with a better rear camera and smaller bezels so the screen can get slightly bigger. 4.2" screen would be fine.

Likewise, I don't care about touch or face ID. I can use a passcode if I want to lock it.

Apple doesn't give different model numbers to different storage amounts, only in differences in cellular connectivity (or lack thereof) to work in different markets.
