What's with the step back on the brilliant Magsafe conector?

I cannot count the number of times that has saved my MBP from destruction.

I agree. I had to buy a new(ish) Macbook recently. The new retina Macbook was on the comparison list. Lack of Magsafe was a huge first strike against it. It seems minor and petty, but it is not a compromise I am willing to make, not yet anyway.

The consecutive model numbers could mean they are stream lining the model lines.

For instance doesn't make sense to have MacBooks and MacBook Airs so those could easily be consolidated. Consolidating the pro lines seems a bit tougher since Pro users want more ports. But it could be all simplified into 3 different size "MacBooks" with each able to have upgraded performance/storage for pro users, and the 15in would come with a few additional ports. The only downside in that scenario is people who want the smallest size but pro number of ports maybe out of luck without adapters.

Time will tell!

So... No mac pro...

Kind of shocking if that is the case, really. I mean, I'm not in the market for one, but I've always kind of brushed off the thinking that maybe Apple has moved on from the desktop. No updates this time around to any desktop models when they are among the most in need of a refresh make me rethink that. They simply can't keep selling these machines today without updates. You'd have to be nuts to buy one. Maybe they really are going to pull an Xserve and just discontinue them. That would be really sad, and I think a mistake. The may be niche, but the niches they fill shouldn't be ignored. At the very least, include a slide at the end to say the processors, graphics cards and memory have been revved and leave it at that.

Intel is just now nearing release on successors for the high-core count Xeons that the Mac Pro uses. They could have revved the 4-core model already, but I assume they're waiting for the higher-core count options to be updated too before refreshing the whole line. Downside(?) to using that branch of Xeon chips, they have a long shelf life compared to the desktop chip counterparts.

I hope there are better enhancements coming than the one rumored so far. I don't see a point of a big event with the updates that have been rumored. 5 mins to introduce new Macs and 1 hour 55 mins to talk about the Nike Apple watch?

Rumors and random guesses that rarely end up being truth.

Don't buy into rumors unless you want to be let down.

Rumors is the only reason why we're here

Another leak orchestrated by the Russians to undermine Cook's event on Thursday.

Putin takes the Mac event seriously and his intelligence continues to get him updates to the minute!

Next year, the 12" MacBook may be replaced with a revived 11" variant.

So, altogether we'll have:

11" and 13" MacBook
13" and 15" MacBook Pro

As far as naming goes, there will be a Pro version and a non-Pro version of most products, that's it, no more Minis or Airs:

iPad - iPad Pro
iPhone - iPhone Pro
Mac - Mac Pro
MacBook - MacBook Pro

this makes too much sense.

thats why they might not do it.

I had hoped for a similar announcement; however as a business man I don't think I'd announce a future upgrade on an existing product...that could have a severe negative impact on holiday/4th Qtr sales of the current model.

Bean counting is not my forte, but they did announce the last Mac Pro 6 months before it became available. And as many have said, Hello Again has direct links to iMac reveals in the past. So for me, no worries until the event itself.

Almost there.

Hello Scottland!

They discontinued it because it's ridiculous. Doesn't change the fact that it's been only about a year since they had the idiotic idea to do it in the first place. It's not like it's some ancient misstep from back when Tim Cook just started.

Rumours indicate it was Jony Ive's idea, and he was Steve Jobs' best friend. NOT a Tim Cook failing.

These rumors don't add up. Why would Apple only update one of the MBAs? I think this post with the three consecutive model numbers confirms one of my suspicions.

I am calling it now, they are reintroducing the 17" MacBook Pro in addition to the two smaller sizes.

I really hope I am correct because I could use the bigger screen.

No Mac Pro. No Mini. No iMac.

Apple has turned into a fashion gimmick company, and they're more interested in making iPhones and $15,000 watches.

The iPhone is a great device, but it's become the company's bread and butter. The Mac is dying.

Which sucks, because people need Macs to develop for iOS. Letting the Mac stagnate means flipping off your iOS developer base.

There just isn't much profit margin in these products anymore. Considering the tiny numbers of Mac Pros they sell developing an all-new model might not be profitable. Apple is focused on the mobile market these days because that is where there are high profit margins.

There will still be a few Macs, but Apple is totally convinced that we are in the post-PC era and that means there will be less focus on computers, especially standalone models like the Mac Pro and Mac Mini. I could see them just market notebooks and an iMac soon. If they have a basic iMac and an iMac Pro that will probably fill the desktop need and developing only one model will help it remain profitable.

The 3 numbers only suggest that the want to start selling 3 new devices in Russia shortly after the event.

For all we know they might register another 26 devices the day after the event, all going on sale some time in november....
