Well, in the past they introduced the MacBook Air because it was slim and lightweight compared to the other MacBooks. The question now is, how much slimmer and lighter they can do a new Air and does it worth keeping the "Air" label up. The normal recently introduced MacBook is already very light and slimm.
Maybe we get an Tablet/MacBook mixture as third device?

Rumours indicate it was Jony Ive's idea, and he was Steve Jobs' best friend. NOT a Tim Cook failing.

The point wasn't who came up with the idea, the point was demonstrating that this is the kind of company Apple is now.

There will still be a few Macs, but Apple is totally convinced that we are in the post-PC era and that means there will be less focus on computers, especially standalone models like the Mac Pro and Mac Mini. I could see them just market notebooks and an iMac soon. If they have a basic iMac and an iMac Pro that will probably fill the desktop need and developing only one model will help it remain profitable.

Until we have a full developer suite on iOS and keyboard/mouse support, there will never not be a need for full computers.

Apple likes to say that iOS devices can do everything a computer can do. That's true, but only for casual users. I can't run VMWare on an iPad. I can't write programs on an iPad. I can't (easily) develop websites on an iPad. iOS is mostly a consumption device. The world needs creation devices too.

For me it all comes down to battery life :) I have my i7/256 AIR and loving daily 12hour battery life!! Nothing like going to work with a full charge, coming home and you still have 20-30% left.

Maybe they will drop the AIR ?

Its getting close. Im slowing going from 6 to 12.

Coke sold their products in Germany, until the troops landed and were moving east.
I B M leased their punchcard equipment to Germany to keep records of those in the Death Camps.
I think its time for Apple to pull out of Russia...completely....let them drive to Poland to buy Apple products
they use Apple computers to steal emails from the US Government....why should apple give them help to do it????

What's with the step back on the brilliant Magsafe conector?

I cannot count the number of times that has saved my MBP from destruction.
How can you complain about something that hasn't even been announced yet? The article specifically states a "MagSafe-like USB-C" port, so it sounds to me like there will probably be one.

This just seems strange. No iMacs, Mac Pros, Mac Minis, or iPad Pros? So this event is going to last 10 minutes? Surely the touch bar wouldn't take that long to show off. Maybe AirPods again. If they're just showing three new MacBooks, then I really have to wonder: Is ARM coming to the Mac? A-series processors? I know I've talked about this before, but I mean honestly—this doesn't seem significant enough for a whole event without anything else. So I see two options: Either there will be more than MacBooks shown (at the very least iPads), or there is a lot more to this MacBook update than we realize. If they're switching to ARM, then they'd have a lot of stuff to talk about. Off the top of my head:
  • Platform transition
    • How will legacy code run?
    • Xcode changes
    • Possible roadmap information for platform support
  • iOS apps in macOS
    • Universal binaries?
    • Optimizing for touch/mouse
    • Possibility of cross-platform iOS widgets?
  • Explanation of the tech
    • Why switching?
    • The power of the X-series ARM chips
    • Benefits such as power per watt, custom designed integration with the OS, etc
    • Possibly backwards compatible
    • Maybe the ability to get pro apps running on Mac and iPad with a lot less work
  • Maybe a brief send-off for the old campus as this would be the last event there
I imagine there would be a lot of interoperability between Intel and ARM if they're only releasing them on the MacBook to start, as that could kill sales of other Macs as people would want to wait for them to be upgraded so they won't be left behind with a quickly legacy machine. It's smart to start on the most mobile Macs and then work back from there as the processors become more powerful.

Bean counting is not my forte, but they did announce the last Mac Pro 6 months before it became available. And as many have said, Hello Again has direct links to iMac reveals in the past. So for me, no worries until the event itself.
I hope you're right - we bought a 2015 27" 5K Imac last year and need another one in another room. I'm an IDIOT as far as specks go so I'd probably be fine just buying another one like the one I bought last year. I NEED to purchase 2 new laptops for my 13 and 14 year old kids. I bought my 15 year old a MBP 13" (with 16gb and the I7) last year and she likes it. I just wish I knew more to know if I need to duplicate the 16gb and the I7 for the new laptops I'm buying. Some folks that work for me have told me the base model is sufficient and I spent too much last year...but as I said I'm and idiot!

Agree! What's this Russian connection? First they want to totally manipulate the election & now they want to take over Apple. Total BS, I say! What's next - their takeover of Jenny Craig & Chick-fil-A?

Russian operatives are working on behalf of Microsoft to help them become number one again. Do you really think it's a coincidence that Russian hackers leak Apple's plans the same week Microsoft has a big event?

There just isn't much profit margin in these products anymore. Considering the tiny numbers of Mac Pros they sell developing an all-new model might not be profitable. Apple is focused on the mobile market these days because that is where there are high profit margins.

Focus is not required, Ive is not required. Build the cheapest one that can be build, and build the most powerful one that can be build. Focus done. If you have a little extra time, put one in between.

Here is a wild guess!

The 13" MacBook is the new 12" MacBook with less bezel, oled bar, and Touch ID.

I mean it is "the future of the mac" according to apple.

No new Watch bands?
Yeah, very disappointing, was hoping for Luis Vuitton band to match my $3,500 LV macbook sleeve. I guess Apple is doom and will never innovate anymore. Who care about what's inside stupider nerdy laptops?

No Mac Pro. No Mini. No iMac.

Apple has turned into a fashion gimmick company, and they're more interested in making iPhones and $15,000 watches.

The iPhone is a great device, but it's become the company's bread and butter. The Mac is dying.

Which sucks, because people need Macs to develop for iOS. Letting the Mac stagnate means flipping off your iOS developer base.
I'm starting to think so too... sad...

After 3 years of hearing crickets, if there is no new Mac Pro, the sound of any pro market thats left will be deafening. After waiting and waiting and waiting, this is it. This will be the moment of clarity that we've all been waiting for. Intel has released two newer generations of cpu in this time, Nvidia and AMD have released several new gyrations of GPU in this time. There would be absolutely no excuse they can provide other there than. No new Mac Pro = clear indication Apple has no interest in this market. On October 28th, we are either getting a bunch of MacPro's or all new PC's and completely getting out of the Apple ecosystem.
