Why did the Queen song immediately start playing in my head, "I wantt it all. I want it all. I want it all. And I want it now!"

If that’s the “only” thing keeping you with Apple then go ahead and don’t let the door hit you. You will enjoy all the little brainfarts that permeates Windows in various regards (settings, UI, scaling, power user nice little tricks and applets, etc.) compared to macOS.
Not sure how that’s relevant.
Sorry to break it to you but you'r behind the times. Windows is nothing like that. But we do have power user nice tricks. and we do have applets. Did I mention we have apps as well, and LOTS of them. I hope that decisions like these (bad ones) will break this brain dead dumb Apple everywhere mindset. They make great phones. I love my watch. But that's what they care about and what they are good at. Take the rest of your business to people who are working for it and want it.

So if you thought that's where we were 15 years ago, You would be amazed about where we are today. Windows is LIGHT YEARS ahead of where it was 15 years ago or even 5. I love my iPhone, but you'd have to pry my Windows PC out of my cold dead hands. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

And you can go on vacation with the money you save!

If I were Valve I would - how was that? - put on the big pants and simply remove Steam from Mac OS. That would probably once and for all remove the little traction Mac gaming had.
...That would be an extremely petty decision, it would only hurt Valve financially, and Apple has no reason to care what Valve does.

I was going to buy another Apple TV just so I could play my steam games in the conservatory now summer is coming. Guess I won't be bothering now!
Ask Steam to get the android app on the Amazon App store. Then you can play your games on a much cheaper FireTV 4K. That will show Apple.

You can’t have The Steam app on your phone, BUT wait for the next Animojis we have in store for iOS 12. They will provide minutes of fun!

Disagree. How dare you. They won't do that.

Instead, crippling iPhone 6 and 7 performance and battery life with forced update and download (whatever you do, it will still download updates) IS the stupidiest and greediest.
There is no forced update. If you chose not to install you can delete the update in settings.

No one would be surprised if Apple didn't allow you to run Windows on your phone. Yet I would argue Windows is less a threat than a game platform to Apple's revenue.

None of this means I agree with Apple on these things of course... Apple should curate to protect users, not to protect Apple.
You can already run Windows on your iPhone or your iPad or your Mac,and I am not talking about Remote desktop or Bootcamp. I'm talking about Virtualization. With Server Side programs like VMware Horizon or Citrix. With Server class performance. If you don't want the full Windows experience they can just send you just the App that you want. Like Microsoft Word or Excel. Here's the thing. This is no different that what Steam wants to do. There is absolutely no chance that Apple would have the guts and be stupid enough to stop Citrix or VMware from doing this. So why should Steam be any different.

This is a shame. I setup the latest gen Apple TV for someone and was quite impressed with. I liked it more than my Fire TV and was going to buy one.

Now I won’t. It’s not as though I care so much about Steam. I have no use for it. My concern is if they pull this due to business conflicts. What’s to say they won’t pull Netflix, Spotify, Hulu, Sling, &c. For the same reason.

Having a monopoly on one part of a market isn’t a thing. Does Arby’s have a monopoly on Arby’s restaurants? How about McDonalds or Dairy Queen with their respective places?

not having been ruled a monopoly by a court does not mean your not one, being a monopoly isn't illegal. Engaging in anticompetitive behavior in order to become or maintain a monopoly is illegal also known as AntiTrust.

Basically Anything vertically Intergraded could be argued to be a monopoly, One of the earliest examples of a Monopoly was American Tobacco.

using your logic they could have told the judge "just smoke pot" its still smoking right

or in the case of there licorice flavoring they could have point out it came from a root that tastes that way.
Bell was not the sole phone company either etc.

so if the Argument was is a Apple a Monopoly as a PC Manufacturer that runs Windows I'd say no you can buy a Razer, Dell, HP etc. that runs windows.

but you you were to ask does Apple have a Monopoly on MacOS I'd have to Say yes.
-MacOS is a Unique computing experience
-Apple controls the means to make Macs/MacOS
-apple attempts to artificially prevent people from running it on equivalent hardware (hackintoshing)

in short is apple a monopoly clearly they are in several ways

do i think a case could be made for AntiTrust, i think its possbile it may not win but who could afford to take them to court over it and even if someone did would the courts be tech-savy enough to understand the nuance?
I think not based on previously legal proceedings involving technology.

o.k., no new apple-tv for me then.

and thanks, toucharcade, i‘m sure some greedy higher-up ass at apple read that article and revised the approval. (nah, i still like you, it‘s not your fault).

i just can‘t see in what way this would have endangered apple‘s profits. you have to have your computer running, you have to buy a mfi-controller. this is the kind of software that people buy who already own a ton of apps on for playing on the go, and will still buy them. just because I own a ps4, i won‘t buy less games on ios. and even if they make a few bucks less from app-sales, that‘s still a software that sells ipads, appe-tvs and mfi-controllers, so it‘d at least even out.

what‘s next, spotify, amazon prime video ?

I've been a loyal Apple user for nearly 20 years now.

I appreciate Apple's attempt at a high quality all-around experience. However, their continued resistance to interoperability and the declining quality of that experience have been extremely frustrating to me. I run a Linux desktop at home--can't get my iCloud files or listen to my Apple music subscription. Siri, Maps, iCloud are just not keeping up with the competition. Desktops are insanely out of date and can't be upgraded; laptops are also using out of date hardware and making questionable design decisions (I like the feel of the keyboard, but if it has that many problems...)

I was really excited about Steam Link. But now, Apple has started playing the bs rejection game again.

This might be the straw that breaks the camel's back for me. If not, any transition back AWAY from Intel chips surely will be.

on the other hand, i am still allowed to use the ps4 remote-play app on my mac, that does exactly the same freaking thing. without having to use an expensive mfi-controller.

Probably is. Civ for example, is available in iOS. With this app, anyone can play the steam version, and wont need to buy the iOS version.

True, but it's not apples to apples..I mean my 2014 iMac with an i7 and 16GB of RAM still takes longer than I'd like between turns on Civ, especially towards the middle/ends of games...I haven't played through a whole game via iOS because they are charging the same amount for performance that just isn't going to come close to that on a desktop...I'd be interested in hearing if anyone on here plays the iOS version of Civ VI and how long it takes to play a huge map with as many AI opponents as possible.

As the owner of an AMD powered PC, this is pleasing news. Who wants more options anyway. Bizarre decision.

Apple continues to be clueless about gaming.

I wouldn't say clueless insofar as Apple simply doesn't want Mac users playing anything harder than Candy Crush, and all those other fun games that's so cutting edge.

I'll continue using the Nvidia GeForce NOW app for games, plus Nvidia Shield is pretty sweet as well. Not saying it's for everybody but there are far better options, and I can simply boot camp it up and stream to the TV any game in my outnumbered, too little time to play Steam library.

Moonlight and R-Play are from individual developers that aren't actually affiliated with either Nvidia or Sony, so that could be a factor. The business conflict in question may have nothing to do with the basic streaming aspect.

Actually some people we're suggesting that it has actually nothing to so with the in-app purchase but rather with the way Valve was circumventing the MFI certification to get their Steam Controller working.

Still a dick move from Apple. I mean you either want gaming or you don't.

...That would be an extremely petty decision, it would only hurt Valve financially, and Apple has no reason to care what Valve does.

Oh please...are you suggesting that Mac Gaming is actually a significant fraction?

Not very surprising is it? If they remove the functionality to buy games within the app I think Apple might reconsider.

I must say though, this is the first time I’ve ever been remotely tempted to switch to Android.

Edit: The more I think about this, the less sense it makes. What are the potential users of this app (ie, people who play PC games) more likely to do - forget about PC games and buy Angry Birds 15 instead, or move to Android and continue playing PC games now with the ability to stream them to their iPadwannabes? I know what I think is more likely, and it doesn’t increase revenues for APPL. Even the probable most common outcome, that people continue playing PC games without the ability to steam to their iPad is neutral for Apple - there’s no benefit for them in any outcome.
Apple the new Microsoft?
