Ahhhhh... God dammit!

This is why we can't have nice things!

Maybe it has to do with the remote access to the store? Maybe Valve can deactivate all access to the store from the remote device?

I have just recently bought physical Steam Link and I must say I love it. I have been playing Portal 2, Rage and Doom 3 BFG this past week. Portal 2 in couch coop mode with my wife. Not to mention you can stream Kodi which I use to play family videos and pictures from my QNAP.

Apple has made a huge mistake. This forum is full of Apple apologists but this thread is practically devoid of them. Everyone agrees it's a misstep for once. If I were to guess, they are afraid of reduced income from App Store. Even if it is minute one, they count every single cent.

Man I'm so glad all the normies got onto this internet trend.

Now I can decide if I want a phone that incessantly spies on me and sells all my data to a Chinese or Korean government, or a phone that I spend a fortune on but never own, or have any right to repair.

What a time to be alive.

...
I must say though, this is the first time I’ve ever been remotely tempted to switch to Android.
...

Already done that.

Switched to Android years ago and can't go back. I still have Apple products for wife and kids though. And I occasionally checking MacRumors, hoping something interesting come out from Apple.

Oh, scratch that. My kids chose Android.

Steam Link rejection is stupid.

How can Google have Maps on AppStore when Apple also have Maps. There are a bunch of streaming apps competing with Apple and not rejected. There are Spotify, Pandora competing with Apple Music (which is really bad, btw). Internet browsers? There are Chrome (better!), Firefox, Opera and at the same time: Safari.

Apple is afraid of Google. Where Valve is a small player compared to Google. Yes, Steam Link is not that great (still beta, as in broken). But this move is really made me laugh, I can only miss those days frustrated by Apple.

...
I’m feeling that there’s nothing left. This was the straw that broke the camel’s back for me. When it’s time to replace my iPhone, I’ll be looking at Android devices.

You wont regret it. Maybe the only regret is, why didn't you do that sooner :D

So for all you guys it would make any sense that on an iPad you could both buy Civilization VI from the appstore OR stream the Steam version of Civilization VI you hoarded during a summer sale and play it with a Steam controller?

Doesn’t it sound retarded platform-wise?

What’s next, Ps4 remote play on xbox1?

And I stand my ground 10” android tablets are a speck in iPad’s eye.

Windows users, how is the virus, spyware, malware, driver compatibility situation on windows these days? Is it still as bad as 15 years ago? I aks becasue the absence of those problems is the ONLY thing keeping me to Apple. But looks like compatibility is on the way out with Apple. I am seriously considering all that BS is a price worth having for affordable hardware, compatibility, and dare I say it, "innovation". But if it aint as bad as it was with XP I might be looking for a windows PC next.

That is the rub, the 120hz refresh thing. Without that, I’d say a Pixelbook is still a good option.
It's still not a proper tablet. For one you can't replace the software keyboard with a third party one. It also doesn't have access to the entire Play Store library. You can't change the screen timeout and it doesn't have a fast solution like TouchID. With the FaceID iPads launching soon this gap will get even larger. Apple has an effective monopoly on both the tablet and wearables market.

Google had a winner with the Nexus 7. I remember it's display and hardware being superior to the iPads of that time. It's too bad they gave up on Android tablets after that. Google only competes with Apple on phones. They have nothing to offer with tablets and watches.

If that’s the “only” thing keeping you with Apple then go ahead and don’t let the door hit you. You will enjoy all the little brainfarts that permeates Windows in various regards (settings, UI, scaling, power user nice little tricks and applets, etc.) compared to macOS.
Not sure how that’s relevant.

I guess i will not be using it on my Apple TV or on any of my IOS devices. Apple really?? Is Apple now based on Cuba or China or any of those restricted countries without fredom to create? Are there only genius people inside Apple buildings?

This is sad and just another reason why many developers don't trust the App Store on Mac. At the moment they can release any app they want via their own website but one day Apple may lock the Mac apps down like they have done on iPhone and then they're the gatekeepers.

If you had ever lived in China or Cuba, you probably wouldn’t be making such a boneheaded comparison.

Seems like they would ban Steam from macOS if they could. Their allergy or phobia of games has been going on for ages and is an enigma to me to this day. And another reason to leave the platform. They're piling up.

You made a good point, but I think it will only make iOS platform richer with remote play to other console games.

If you have PS4 or Xbone, wouldn't you want to stream them on your device on your bed, maybe? You could still play cheaper AppStore games. Apple will still profit from it (and people wont jumpship to Android).

Think about it. It will only make the mobile device more interesting.

Which one to choose: a device that can stream console/pc/mac games inside the house, the other can't.

It's no brainer for me nor Google, they will embrace PS4/Xbone streaming. Hack, Android users will be able to play casual "app" games and also real games.

Anyway Apple and Games have always been oxymorons. Their Macs have pitiful GPUs for even casual gaming

Disagree. I think knowingly selling the iPhone 6 when they knew it was going to bend was the stupidest and greediest.
Disagree. How dare you. They won't do that.

Instead, crippling iPhone 6 and 7 performance and battery life with forced update and download (whatever you do, it will still download updates) IS the stupidiest and greediest.

Still as bad as ever...

Better to stay with MacOS' extensive AAA game selection.

Apple you bunch of muppets!

This is a niche gamer product that make your devices more valuable and doesn’t stop native game development in ANY way.

There are zero business conflicts and Apple need to go screw themselves if they think this is ok.

I’m at the boycott Apple level of triggered, this and many many other things have made me loose faith in them to do the right things for CUSTOMERS. F the bottom line make the best products with the best software and stop screwing developers and customers.

Beside how questionable it is that gaming is such an important part of having a phone or iPad to you...

What’s the point of streaming a game on an IPad or even worse iPhone? You still need a computer and you still neeed to stay withing Wi-fi range (or Ethernet cable length)... why would ever want to play on another devices??

For some multiscreen action. I often play games on the TV (from the computer) whilst watching telly on the iPad (obviously not action games, generally slow or turn based strategy games like Surviving Mars). I would like to do this with the screens the other way round (especially if I got a 12" iPad Pro, which I was planning to do this year).

Not very surprising is it? If they remove the functionality to buy games within the app I think Apple might reconsider.

I must say though, this is the first time I’ve ever been remotely tempted to switch to Android.

Edit: The more I think about this, the less sense it makes. What are the potential users of this app (ie, people who play PC games) more likely to do - forget about PC games and buy Angry Birds 15 instead, or move to Android and continue playing PC games now with the ability to stream them to their iPadwannabes? I know what I think is more likely, and it doesn’t increase revenues for APPL. Even the probable most common outcome, that people continue playing PC games without the ability to steam to their iPad is neutral for Apple - there’s no benefit for them in any outcome.

Exactly my thoughts as well. I could even see people buying iPads specifically for this purpose, and I'd like to think apple rather sells an actual device and tie that buyer into the ecosystem than sell a couple of measly mobile games.
