Stupid decision on Apple's part as they could have sold more Apple TV's if it worked on that, and with all this media attention I hope they reconsider. As others have mentioned, if this app is not allowed on the app store why the hell is apps like moonlight and even remote desktop apps still available and have been available for many years o_O

Man I'm so glad all the normies got onto this internet trend.

Now I can decide if I want a phone that incessantly spies on me and sells all my data to a Chinese or Korean government, or a phone that I spend a fortune on but never own, or have any right to repair.

What a time to be alive.

Haha so true. Its a decision Im having a hard time with myself, and will never go Android cause of it, but I'm willing to give up all the niceities that iOS provides if there were a good completely open (and possibly libre) linux phone out there.

This is amusing. You can stream your PS4 games to your Mac. "Business conflicts"? With Apple putting some emphasis on Mac gaming, you'd figure they would try and prevent Sony from developing on there. Yeah, it's not the same thing since the PS App has to be downloaded directly from Sony and isn't on the Mac App Store.

I think some of these mobile game developers are worried of potential dips in their sales. This Steam app would kill home usage on the iPad of these really crappy games.

Sounds like another "we have no idea what we're talking about but we're running with it" type of story.

Like people interested in AAA PC Games would suddenly get those half-assed mobile games like Candy Crush...jeez.

If I were Valve I would - how was that? - put on the big pants and simply remove Steam from Mac OS. That would probably once and for all remove the little traction Mac gaming had.

So incredibly stupid.

Taking a look at Android P, if it turns out as good as they say, I may be selling my iPhone X and switching to a Pixel 3. I’m so tired of not being allowed to do what I want to do with my own device. I can’t install Steam Link. Heck, I can’t even change the default web browser on my $1000 device! Ridiculous.

I already sold my Apple TVs and switched to Rokus. Much better experience, but I can’t Airplay to them just because Apple says so. But if I switch to Android, then everything works because everything else uses standard, interoperable protocols.

I’m so fed up with the walled garden and Apple trying to “save us” from ourselves. Enough is enough. I want total control over my devices and I want to put whatever software I want on them, configured however I want.

So maybe MacRumors and Steam should actually list some of the other "similar" remote apps? Are they gaming stores? Are they app stores? Provide some actual examples instead of just vaguely mentioning it as an aside.

We can keep dreaming.

Not to mention if they removed it because the Steam app had their game store in it what’s stopping me from using a remote desktop app and visiting the Windows store on an iPad to buy stuff.

Even before this decision, I didn't buy mac games through the app store anyway. This sets my 'no games from the app store' policy in stone.

Makes you wonder what would have happened to apple if Bill Gates had told uncle Steve to sod off when asked about making ms office et al available for the mac.

Hahaha as if anyone expected Apple to do anything for ’them’ as opposed for Apples profits...

They can’t lose any of that 30% cut if all those freemium games now.. and this is after Valve disabled the in App Store..

Their is literally no reason for Apple to refuse this app other then their own personal financial interests.... NOT a decision made for its customers in the slightest.

An example of Apples refusal to support platforms for its customers for me is Apple Music, I did praise it and had been using it, but it doesn’t work very well with Ford Sync these days on iOS 11, on the official support page they literally claim it’s your problem Ford have to update their systems....

http://discussions.apple.com/thread/8084926

Typical Apple, something used to work, they broke it, it’s your cars fault!
Needless to say I’ve ditched Apple Music now for Spotify which also doesn’t work the best with Sync but I can make it work a lot easier, and they have good support and it is platform agonistic.
And their suggestions are much better and the app interface too IMO.

Really, so what? The whole advantage of mobile gaming is to play while you're mobile. But this won't do that, unless to you "mobile" means "while within the four walls of your house". And even then, you'd better have a flawless wifi setup.

This is hardly a loss for Apple consumers.
Speak for yourself. I would love playing AAA titles in my bedroom

I heard Apple was going to approve the app, but required that Valve modify every game on Steam so that they would work with the Apple remote!!! LOL!!!
I think it comes down to Apple doesn't what it's deficiencies in gaming to be exposed in such a glaring way on its own device.

So disappointed in apple's decision. I have the link hardware and it royally sucks, particularly with controller comparability. This thing would have let us all use IOS enabled game controllers with the apple tv.

I guess their business calculation is, if you play steam games through their link app, you might not buy native iOS games. If that's the case it'd be quite lame of Apple but not surprising coming from Tim Cook's vision of a profit-greedy-driven Apple above core ethical values.

Don't forget that Apple's big play now - their hope for the future - and their stock value - depends on "services", not hardware. And the bulk of their services revenue is people buying games on the App Store. If you could get better games by streaming from your computer, I think most people would at least buy less native games - not zero, but less. I think Apple would rather promote the idea that their platform natively supports PC class games.

No one would be surprised if Apple didn't allow you to run Windows on your phone. Yet I would argue Windows is less a threat than a game platform to Apple's revenue.

None of this means I agree with Apple on these things of course... Apple should curate to protect users, not to protect Apple.

WTH Apple? Are you serious right now? I've had an iPhone since 2010, this may very well be what makes me look to other phone manufacturers.

Moonlight if you have an NVIDIA Card. R-Play for PS4 owners. Microsofts Remote Desktop.

Moonlight and R-Play are from individual developers that aren't actually affiliated with either Nvidia or Sony, so that could be a factor. The business conflict in question may have nothing to do with the basic streaming aspect.

Windows users, how is the virus, spyware, malware, driver compatibility situation on windows these days? Is it still as bad as 15 years ago? I aks becasue the absence of those problems is the ONLY thing keeping me to Apple. But looks like compatibility is on the way out with Apple. I am seriously considering all that BS is a price worth having for affordable hardware, compatibility, and dare I say it, "innovation". But if it aint as bad as it was with XP I might be looking for a windows PC next.
So if you thought that's where we were 15 years ago, You would be amazed about where we are today. Windows is LIGHT YEARS ahead of where it was 15 years ago or even 5. I love my iPhone, but you'd have to pry my Windows PC out of my cold dead hands. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed.
