Most of us seem to be able to set the homepods as the default. The beta tvOS allowed this and so does the release version. Have you got both devices on 14.2, the HomePod and AppleTV? You need both on 14.2.
Yep everything is on 14.2 but cannot see homepods in default output

I also can’t see HomePod in audio settings but Apple TV does now keep my HomePod as default output when I put it to sleep and wake it.

I set the homepods to the default output to Apple TV etc and couldn’t see the Atmos option in Netflix. I closed the Netflix app and opened it again and now can see atmos listed with the title. Not sure if it’s outputting in atmos though 🤷🏻‍♂️

edit. Before it said 5.1 whereas now it says atmos.
Same here. Seeing Dolby Atmos in Netflix. Although curiously after coming back to the TV and waking up the Apple TV the Immersive Audio settings I saw were gone...

I can be almost certain it isn’t my TV - as before completely resetting the HomePods, I saw the Immersive Audio settings when my TV was the default device, but when I switched to the HomePod pair, it did not (and showed only Auto, not Auto, Dolby Atmos Available in the A/V summary screen). Once they were reset, re-paired, and set as default again, the option appeared. Furthermore, this wasn’t an option at all with the 14.2 beta I tested.
I removed the beta earlier from the HomePods and reset and repaired and updated to the release of 14.2. It doesn’t show anything for immersive audio, and in apples description they talk about enjoying stereo, surround sound and Dolby atmos.

So, I’m pretty sure you are seeing what you’re seeing because of the TV. In theory, if you have the HomePods able to process the new sound stuff you should be able to select surround sound separately to just atmos and also just stereo too. Do you see those options?

Assuming you have the HomePod working in atmos, you must be able to hear some sort of surround ‘effect’ I’d guess similar to the AirPods Pro feature. How does it sound?

Lordy lord, this sound absolutely incredible. Tried with a couple of stereo paired Homepods, and the Atmos track of Greyhound.

First things first, requirements and set-up:

A). Upgrade Homepods and Apple TV 4K to final version of 14.2 (different build than the RC).

B). Make sure that the Homepods and the Apple TV are in the same room (via the Home app), as the Apple TV.

C). Makes sure that both of them AND the Apple TV, are set up as a hub for Homekit (no idea why this is necessary).

D). Make sure that the audio output of the Apple TV is set to Auto and that it says Atmos ON.

E). Makes sure that the Homepods are set as the default output of the Apple TV. If you don´t do this and merely select them from the Apple TV Airplay menu, the inmersive audio feature will not work or appear, and the homepods will sound the same as before.

F). Try some content with 5.1 or Atmos sound.

G). ENJOY.

It is hard to benchmark but the soundstage may be a little wider than was previously. I have noticed that it will sporadically show that setting or not after cycling my Apple TV power a few times. I suppose maybe Apple did not intend to make us have to choose between Atmos or not and have it active by default on these devices (although this is an optimistic viewpoint)

Has anyone tried playing Atmos audio from the iPhone to the HomePod on 14.2? Very curious to see if it works.

Can I ask....how do I do C?

I’ve done all this up to E, but it doesn’t show in Audio Settings to be selected as default?

You should have an new option in the Apple TV audio and video menu that says default option. You should be able to select your Homepods there.

I am looking forward to not having to select the hompod as a sound source each time I watch my TV.
Anyone gotten this to work yet? I can still select HomePod as the sound source but in Settings the only option it gives as "Default Audio Output" is my TV Speakers. No option to select HomePod as the default source

I guess if we have the beta profile on the Apple TV we have to wait for another release then, maybe that’s why most of us can’t see the option... it’s a pain to reset the Apple tvOS and removing the profile doesn’t make it update to the release version like the HomePods.

Alongside iOS and iPadOS 14.2, Apple today released new 14.2 software for the HomePod, which includes support for new Siri and Intercom features. Today's update comes a couple of weeks after the release of HomePod 14.1 software.

With the update, Siri can now provide a personal snapshot of each HomePod user's day, offering up news information, weather, traffic, reminders, and more when asked "What's my update?"

Intercom now supports iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, and CarPlay, and the full-size HomePod can be connected to an Apple TV 4K for immersive sound. Apple's full release notes for the update are below:‌‌HomePod‌‌‌ software is installed automatically on the ‌‌‌HomePod‌‌‌, but the ‌‌‌HomePod‌‌‌ can also be manually updated by following the instructions in our ‌‌HomePod‌‌ update how to.

I’m having issues with my stereo homepods connected to Apple TV giving a crackling/skipping sound whenever I navigate the menu or play a game. I have 2 TVs and 2 set of stereo homepods. It’s doing it on both TVs. All devices on latest update.
Anybody got an idea as to what might be happening?

Yeh strange. I put mine to sleep and turned it back on and Atmos on Netflix still shows, but there is no immersive audio option, if that is something that needs to be turned on?

The “What’s My Update” feature isn’t working for me. Siri tells me I should get my response from my iPhone instead. I also cannot get the news from the HomePod anymore. Siri says there’s a problem and that I should try again. Anyone experiencing either of these issues?

Try this. Go to the Home app on your Iphone. Your Apple TV should appear there, along with your Homepods. Click on the Apple TV card and in the menu that will pop up you should see a default audio toggle. Select the Homepods.

That must be it....on tvOS beta here :(

Unusable with the new set-up.
It‘s now way too bass heavy.
Now it‘s no option anymore to use my HomePods with my AppleTVs.
Really sad.

I just had this problem....is your Apple TV in the same room as your homepods in the HomeKit app?
