For anyone in doubt. Here are screenshots from my tv. My tv isn’t atmos supported. Atmos logo shows on content. Tv output set to HomePods, audio format auto.

Could because the Apple TV is trying to get the output from eArc rather then the homepods. I would disable it on that hdmi port and see. Make sure homepod is the output and auto audio format.

In the home app I moved the Apple TV and the homepods into the same room. Then they showed in the default section

I honestly don’t know. I know when I play something from Apple TV+ I played the Springsteen documentary. It didn’t have atmos before but now it does say atmos however I can’t tell when I play a movie that I have purchased that I know has atmos (if that makes sense)

I just followed yours and B/D’s instructions on adding the Apple TV in the same room as HomePod, and then setting it as default.

The sound is much more powerful than when I didn’t have it set as default. It’s of totally different quality than AirPlay mode.

Nope. Says I need an iCloud account to use AirPlay 2 and HomeKit.

Most of us seem to be able to set the homepods as the default. The beta tvOS allowed this and so does the release version. Have you got both devices on 14.2, the HomePod and AppleTV? You need both on 14.2.

Where are you setting the HomePods as a default from? Using the tv controller or from pulldown menu or Where? Thanks....
