Still expensive. When you work in education, most software via education discount is either free, costs few dollars or has %90-95 discounts, so paying $200 for this 'education' discount is still a typical rip off in Apple's fashion!!!
I don't know what "sense of entitlement" reality show you have been tuning into but, there is certainly no financial ripoff happening with this app bundle. Apple does not owe you special treatment.

How do they verify the purchaser is a student? Could I have one of my kids buy this bundle for me and install it on my computer or is it tied to an apple id?

I ordered yesterday. Anyone else surprised that we have to wait 1-3 business days to get our download codes? Seems to me that what amounts to a digital download should have happened in minutes, not days.

Yep, definitely odd.

Does this have an expiration? I'm guessing it stays tied to my apple ID forever, even after I graduate?

Update: For anyone that's curious, I just purchased it and it never asked for any student information. The field to input my university or school was there, and while I did complete, I don't think it was a mandatory field. Odd. Also, I was able to checkout with PayPal Credit :) 6 months to pay for it, no interest, no payments.

You could just download the trial for now I guess. You would think the code would come a few minutes after paying.

Good on Apple for making their apps a little more accessible. I'm more of a Sony Vegas person but if I would have seen these prices years ago I would have taken the Final Cut Pro path while in college.

When I got my educational priced copy of Logic 9 the only difference was in the licence terms, other than some minor details regarding upgrades and reselling it was just a regular boxed copy of the software with exactly the same content as the full edition. I would imagine that this will be the same.

They've certainly not abandoned Logic, it received a pretty hefty update just a couple of weeks ago.

Absolutely Agree here.
I was looking at Digital Performer, Using my copy of Pro Tools 12 and Cubase as alternatives for some things Logic Pro X did not have, but when that 10.3 update dropped I was certain I was staying on Logic Pro X. Look at some of the other developers sites and you will see that Apple are among the few who got their latest update right :D

Anyone get their download codes yet? order status says "Shipped" which typically means its complete ... but haven't gotten any codes as of yet ... not in a rush but just wondering ...

I'm still curious if we could have someone else order this for us if we are not education-oriented. I've been out of school a long, long, long time.

Perhaps true for the grade school to high school level. But here in the San Francisco Bay Area, go into any university cafeteria/student union/library and the overwhelming majority are MBAs and MBPs.

This, absolutely. The US K12 market may be currently overwhelmed by Chromebooks, but HiEd is still a staunch Apple market.

Ironically, many of the the Google employees focused on the K12 market are former Apple education employees. The pitch consists largely of the following points:

* The critical K12 app is a browser. Don't worry about additional curriculum apps, as 99% of what you need to teach can be found on the web..
* Chromebooks require FAR less work to deploy and administer than iPads.
* Schools can buy 2-3 Chromebooks for the cost of a single iPad.
* Warranty and repairability really don't matter when the acquisition cost is so low.

The fix is a $149 EDU-only iPad, which Apple will never do.

I work at a US university. If you're referring specifically to institutional purchases for computing labs, there's some truth in what you say. But as far as people on campus go - if you walk into any space where a bunch of people are working on their laptops*, you'll see a TON of Macs. Most of the rest are Windows laptops, although not many are actual Microsoft-branded devices (e.g. Surface). I see quite a few of the Yogas, which I must say are pretty nice hardware.

*I'm mainly around engineering and computing areas. It's possible other disciplines might not be as dominated by Macs... I just don't know.

I'm a 5th year civil engineering major at a state university in California. Surface devices are everywhere. I'm totally convinced Apple has lost at least 30-50% of the student marketshare of my university to Surface since I started.

The loss of Aperture reeks of a behind the scenes deal with Adobe. I can't explain it any other way.

Apple abandoning Safari on Windows (and vice versa with IE) also reeks of a similar deal.

I'm not into video but this could be very handy if you're a struggling student that is now struggling even more from Apple's Mac prices!
Apple is entirely capable of doing the dumbest deals. A long time ago Apple owned a breakthrough (for its day) product called Apple Basic. It was multitasking, object oriented, and adaptable to GUIs like the one on the recently introduced Macintosh. A deal was cut with somebody named Gates and the code base for Apple Basic changed hands for a reported $5. Microsoft turned it into Visual Basic and it enabled Windows to dominate enterprise computing to this day. I doubt even Tim Cook can top that level of stupidity.

Verification process.

My experience with Education Store pricing is that if I bought it at an actual Apple store I had to show my teacher ID but if I bought it online there was no verification. I guess we'll see what happens this time.

If my daughter who is at school signs up, can it be redeemed on my apple account and not hers?

I think one reason for this student deal could be the fact that at least in UK Adobe just decided to raise their Creative Cloud education annnual fees from £185 to over £300. That kind of hike isn't even justified with currency fluxuations and this has truly freaked out many UK students (me included). So I'm quite sure that at least in UK there are a lots of students wondering what to do next year since Adobe no longer sells Creative Suite, it's all Creative Cloud or nothing. So if you really think about this all Apple might have just "stolen" some of Adobe's education customers with this deal. The price certainly isn't bad and for a a student this deal is pretty awesome.

Does anyone by the way know if the apps can also be used for commecial purposes? Adobe allows it even if you are a student so surely Apple does too?

The article is incorrect. According to the article "The software bundle is available for teachers, faculty, staff, and students at universities, colleges, and K-12 schools in the United States, as reported by The Loop."

That is not what The Loop says and it is a mis-statement of Apple's educational policies. Students in K-12 are NOT eligible.....only staff and those students accepted to college are eligible.

From Apple's website: "Education pricing is available to college students, students accepted to college, parents buying for college students, faculty, homeschool teachers, and staff at all grade levels." ----- Nothing mentioned about K-12 students being eligible, only staff and those accepted to college.

From The Loop article: "The Pro Apps Bundle for Education is available for teachers, faculty, staff, and college students, as well as K12 and HiEd institutions." ------- Again, nothing mentioned about K-12 students being eligible, only the institutions.

That sucks about adobe. But...this is why I have never jumped on the subscription bandwagon. What happens when/if....they price restructure? At least with physicals you have that physical copy to run when version y+1 goes wtf are you serious price.
