Neato!! I think it'd be worth it to get one of these instead of dumping the MBP for an iMac 27". Chalk up another thing on the wish-list.

Agree. However the 24" with $100 off for an education discount (just order from the apple store online, or in the store, they never check the date of a student ID :D ) isn't a bad price, especially if you have one already.

i just checked the edu discount. it was only $749.

i hope that the 24" stays around. i'm broke in grad school right now, but i may be willing to put in the extra hours at the job to get one of these bad boys.

even at that, i'd only buy one of these things on refurb. maybe the price will drop as well from $599 to, say, $499? or am i too hopeful

I'll be taking my old 19" 1440x900 down to the 2nd hand shop I reckon.

Does anyone know if you can get an education discount on displays in the UK too?

Ouch. You're right. The $899 was $100 off, so now that they lowered the price they lowered the discount. Hmmmm.

Think it might be time to hit up one of my ex Apple colleagues for a 25% Mac Pro discount and a 15% for the display :D

I think this an excellent deal. I plan on getting 3 27inches myself. I run a lot of screen greedy programs (Maya, Unity, Photoshop, Painter, ZBrush, etc) and could really use the screen real estate.

Even though it's not 30" it's nearly the same desktop space as the 30" ACD. In addition, I like the LED-backlit glossy display a lot more. People like us are getting a much better deal from these 27" LED ACDs than 30" ACDs at $1799 with only slightly more vertical desktop space than the 27" ACD gives us.

At least a few of us can see the light here. I cannot wait, as I love everything about my current 24" LED ACDs, and these will be a lot nicer. Not to mention, I will probably get the majority of my money back on the 24" ACDs too. I love it.

"Stunning from every angle." Yeah right.

Shouldn't that read: "Glare from every angle"? Since Apple no longer makes a monitor for pros, I'll keep my 30" ACD going as long as possible. Someone's going to have a nice little cottage industry refurbishing matte ACDs.

Me neither. As beautiful as they are, spending a grand for a monitor is one of the few expenses that makes no sense to this tech nerd.
i hear ya. i bought a 23" Aluminum Cinema Display 4 years ago for $800 and regretted it. it's beautiful and still working - but it simply wasn't worth the price.

i like the iSight, MagSafe, USB hub and speakers in these new models, but it's still really expensive for any mac user.

Awesome, I was just looking at 27" monitors yesterday. I'm still going with the dell because glossy is useless to me, but at the slightly lower price point maybe the dell will drop too.

One can hope.

Dang. I'm in the market for a new display and speakers for my "other" desktop. I love my 24" ACD and would pick this up in a heartbeat if I could use it with either DVI or HDMI output. :(

By the 24" you mean the LED LCD? Which would mean you have a mini display port connection. You can get a splitter and share the same display port connection with as many display port monitors as you want, one of the many benefits.

I'm done with Apple displays if this the direction they are moving in.

I don't want glass.
I don't want or need MagSafe.
No Firewire.
Short cables.

No deal. Laughable that they even show the thing with a desktop.

Same old.. Short cable so you can't have your Mac Pro under your desk.

The 30" Cinema Display is still available, so I assume they aren't discontinuing that yet.

Hey, we're Apple users!
Where would we be without our adapters, dongles, extensions, etc.?
It's the way President-for-life Jobs wants it.

Glossy only.
Just stupid.
No Apple monitor for me.

Am I the only person in this world that actually likes and prefers glossy screens? I never have any reflections on mine and I think it looks better ( Then again my room is almost pitch dark even during the day )

Oh and I wish I had waited when I bought my 24" a few months ago lol I could have spent a few hundred more and gotten this instead. Oh well no harm do my setup works fine for me so not point upgrading yet I guess.

still no 30"ACD update :(

Another disappointed 30"ACD user here. Can we please have bigger monitor with more pixels?

Duncan

Oh sure, spending $1K for an LCD monitor makes loads of sense. I would complain about the lack of a 20" option but I know it would be $500-$600 if it was offered. Once again, we have an Apple monitor priced roughly 2 times retail simply because it trim-matches our Apple computer perfectly.

The firs CD was $2k, and yes, I bought it to perfectly match my G4.

Does the 30 really need an update? I still have the very first 24 and 30 CDs side to side. They work perfectly and are beautiful. Heck they don't even have HDCP.

HAHA i saw a guy buying a 24'' cinema display a few days ago at the apple store... if he waited he could have saved $100:D

not the only one

I'm in the process of moving my machine shop to a bigger space (3000 sq ft) in the same building, and I'm renovating what was a terrible office (knocking out a wall, moving doors, adding outlets) for my computer room (13 X 15 ft). Most everything is going to be painted a semi-matte finish medium gray. That just leaves lights in the drop down ceiling to get 5K bulbs and glare reducing grilles.

I use glossy screens now and it isn't an issue, but environment is everything. I'm assuming that the gamut is the same as the iMac's, so the 27" cinema will probably become my standard and replace all of my current monitors as I replace PC's with iMac's and a Mac Pro, boot camp, Windows 7 and Parallels.

Mostly engineering/manufacturing stuff that I do, but my eyes will appreciate the environment.

Fact is, Apple is still using short cables. After spending that much, you shouldn't have to go out and buy a cable extender because Apple decided that your Mac should be no more than a foot away from the display.

Yes I agree. If this monitor is to be used with the mac Pro as it is advertised, they need to lengthen the cables. It's not that hard.

I scanned the product page, not HDCP compliant? I know Apple doesn't support Blu, but how about a little future proofing.

Im with you on this one. But we all know apple isnt into future proofing.

Indeed, form over function the majority of the time.

Got mine from the refurb store. But if I were looking at 1k and up monitor range I would ignore Apple and go for a 26 NEC spectraview. Apple's monitors are middle of the road at best.

Wow- sure looks nice. I can't find the specs anywhere. Does it have two DVI ports?

My current monitor enables me to switch between my Mini (90% of the time) and PC (10%). I would need the same functionality on a new monitor - and I want one. I'd want to run the mini at 2560x1440 and then whatever I can get out of the PC (think I'm maxed at 1920x1080).

Compared to the Dell it sure looks much nicer - but from a connectivity standpoint, there's no comparison. I expect Dell will drop their price on the U2711 to $899 sometime soon.

U2711 CONNECTIVITY
High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)
2 Digital Visual Interface connectors (DVI-D) with HDCP
DisplayPort (DP)
Video Graphics Array (VGA)
Component Video
Composite Video
1 USB 2.0 upstream port
4 USB 2.0 downstream ports
8 in 1 Media reader

Nope. A lot of people like them. That's what makes the world interesting right? Everyone has different tastes. Unfortunately though, if you're a Mac user and your tastes don't agree with Steve's, you're plain out of luck.

I guess I'll be holding on to my old 30" Cinema Displays for a while yet.
