Ugh, While I prefer matte screens we can all agree that the glass only hurts the image quality by adding more glare. Sure it allows you to touch the screen without worry but that's pointless to me.
Also doesn't come with height adjustment or ability to change to portrait mode. My next monitor is going to be a dell even thought they sadly are doing 16:9 too instead of the much better 16:10 ratio.

I'm in the process of moving my machine shop to a bigger space (3000 sq ft) in the same building, and I'm renovating what was a terrible office (knocking out a wall, moving doors, adding outlets) for my computer room (13 X 15 ft). Most everything is going to be painted a semi-matte finish medium gray. That just leaves lights in the drop down ceiling to get 5K bulbs and glare reducing grilles.

I use glossy screens now and it isn't an issue, but environment is everything. I'm assuming that the gamut is the same as the iMac's, so the 27" cinema will probably become my standard and replace all of my current monitors as I replace PC's with iMac's and a Mac Pro, boot camp, Windows 7 and Parallels.

Mostly engineering/manufacturing stuff that I do, but my eyes will appreciate the environment.

Lol this is funny because I am pretty much doing the same thing. I only have a small bedroom but I am re painting it middle gray and basically making it my photo editing room. Maybe in 5 years or so I update my computer gear but right now I am really happy with my i7 and 24 ACD I plan on keeping both for at least 5 years like I said. Oh and good luck on the moving your machine shop!

Seems like they're canning the 24" for this since their spec page that no longer mentions the 24".

Outside of the size and resolution, is there much different between the 27 and 24?

I'm wondering is Apple planning to release a even larger LED to replace the 30"? And why Apple lowered the 24" but not the 30" inch it's still $1799 maybe Apple will lower the price on the 30" when the 27" is release in September? I'm not waiting anymore picking up the new 27" and ATi 5870 for my 08 Mac Pro if the 5870 works on my 08 Mac Pro

So glad I can buy an entire computer (in fact, almost two Minis) for the price of one display. Even the smaller one that they just dropped the price of.

Wait ... no, I'm not.

Oh, well. If I ever upgrade my display I'll be looking at a Dell instead. (If only it could charge my MacBook!)

Wow this move to all glossy is just a terrible decision. Especially for a display targeting pro users. It's conceived in Apple's vacuum bubble where everything has exactly the right lighting, you're holding it correctly, and aesthetic, of course, trumps function.

Can Apple still be considered the benchmark of design when the functionality suffers so much. I'm beginning to think not.

The MDP on the monitor carries sound. That's great. The question is can it carry sound with an older late 2008 Macbook Pro. I need the MDP port on my computer to carry that sound. Was it a computer software issue that it didn't carry it before, or was it a monitor issue with the 24" ACD? My hunch is the former.

If so, how do I get around that? There HAS to be a way to make it work to carry audio with any MBP with a MDP.

I'll keep my bigger and higher resolution 30" ACD thanks. Still the best display on the market imo.

agreed. I'm so disappointed--taking a step down from the previous largest size. I was hoping to replace my 23" cinema display with something bigger in lieu of a HDTV. But 27" isn't big enough (30" isn't really either but I was hoping for something slightly bigger than 30").

Sigh.

Love glossy displays. Might go to the Apple store just to check this out.

Unfortunately though, if you're a Mac user and your tastes don't agree with Steve's, you're plain out of luck.

Sadly, that's true :-(

Am I the only person in this world that actually likes and prefers glossy screens? I never have any reflections on mine and I think it looks better ( Then again my room is almost pitch dark even during the day )

Oh and I wish I had waited when I bought my 24" a few months ago lol I could have spent a few hundred more and gotten this instead. Oh well no harm do my setup works fine for me so not point upgrading yet I guess.

I prefer glossy screens. I use my Macs in an enclosed suite at work for IT, at home in my basement, in my sun-drenched kitchen, on my deck, etc and don't have issues. But everyone's different. As with Blu Ray choice is good, but in my case it's irrelevant, so I couldn't care less.

Nope. A lot of people like them. That's what makes the world interesting right? Everyone has different tastes. Unfortunately though, if you're a Mac user and your tastes don't agree with Steve's, you're plain out of luck.

I guess I'll be holding on to my old 30" Cinema Displays for a while yet.

You're not "plain out of luck". Just buy another display. I've got a non-Apple display that's matte running at home, and *gasp* it works just fine with my MBP.

My most powerful mac is an mac mini 1.83 and an early 2008 Mac Book Pro, plus a couple of Pentiums and a Core 2 Duo PC that I picked up from a friend and renovated with a 256 SSD and Window 7 (32 as it's a bit too old for 64 bit driver support). I could use a Mac Pro, but I can get by nicely with an i7 iMac and a second 27" display. I'll probably hold out (yet again) for the next generation which will be Sandy Bridge with AVX, perfect for the engineering stuff that I do.

I applaud your initiative. I would speculate that most people complaining of glossy screens probably have poor environments to work in.

I just don't understand Apple's pricing on their monitors. Except for the 30" which was one of the biggest available on the market, all of their monitors have been fairly standard except for their design. But they cost nearly twice as much as other brands that were just as good. If you need a 27" monitor, why not just spend another $800 and get the 27" iMac?

glossy

glossy only, apple you just missed out on 1K from me. I was waiting for a BOM but it won't be this one

Am I the only person in this world that actually likes and prefers glossy screens?

Yes! ;)

Honestly I tried with the 2007 iMac and couldn't take the gloss. My defective eyes can't deal with it at lower brightness (for print calibration). I even bought an 09 MacPro because of it so yeah no glossy for people like me.

I've been waiting absolutely ages for Apple to release a new screen. The gloss I can deal with, not bothered about the foot long cable. BUT BUT BUT I MUST connect my ps3 to it.

I only want a screen to connect the MBPro and my PS3 please please please tell me this is possible using some sort of an adapter. I can remember reading that the recent 27 inch imacs could be used with a ps3 with the aid of an adapter.

Can i live in hope that this monitor will be the same?

Even though it's not 30" it's nearly the same desktop space as the 30" ACD. In addition, I like the LED-backlit glossy display a lot more. People like us are getting a much better deal from these 27" LED ACDs than 30" ACDs at $1799 with only slightly more vertical desktop space than the 27" ACD gives us.

At least a few of us can see the light here. I cannot wait, as I love everything about my current 24" LED ACDs, and these will be a lot nicer. Not to mention, I will probably get the majority of my money back on the 24" ACDs too. I love it.

I agree, these are amazing offerings, granted not perfect, and suited to consumers, very white goods like, but for the price I like it, I run 30 inchers in matte and it looks like its still the king, but man that 2.5K hurt a lot back in 2006!

You kids have it easy!.....in my day....(chomping false teeth on veranda in rocking chair.....)
