The case is overpriced for what u get. There are a lot better aftermarket cases out there, and Apple seems to have gotten that point.

bottomline: you're not missing much by missing a remote, or apple case for that matter.

it generated a lot of trade on ebay for those that had both but didn't need to use them to get a bit of money back to help with the purchase, or to go towards a third party case etc 🙂

Does anyone know if the docks from the 3G iPods work the new iPods w/Clickwheel? B/c I really don't want to have to buy a new dock for my new 20GB Pod.

The dock is different. It won't charge via usb2.0. It might still work with firewire.

Alllright. I hate to be whining. But Anyway. So my 3g iPod came in the mail on thursday. I've used it. Quite a bit. Can I return it and get a refund to get a new one? After a year of debating whether or not to make the switch to apple, and then finally doing it by buying a PowerBook and iPod, and I LOVE it and plan to use for the rest of my life, I think maybe they owe me. So should I call tomorrow, plead my case?

For all the Canadians out there, as of 12:26 am (man, I need to go to bed!), the 40 gig model is still listed on the tech spec page as coming with a dock, remote, and case.

http://www.apple.com/ca/ipod/specs.html

"Earbud headphones, dock, remote, carrying case, AC adapter, FireWire cable, USB 2.0 cable, 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire adapter"

And it also still says the iTunes music store is available!

Music store included.
The perfect companion to iPod, iTunes lets you easily build and manage your digital music collection. Since the iTunes Music Store is built right in, you can browse through hundreds of thousands of songs and audiobooks until you find just what you’re looking for.

Okay, last post...

In case there was still any confusion, it looks like the 3g remote works with the 4 g model:

"Supports all iPods with Dock Connector." is the notation on the remote now...I'm doubting this is any different than the 3g one. The store makes mention where the new accessories are not compatible with old ones, as with the dock:

"Supports new iPod with Click Wheel (20GB or 40GB) only. For an iPod Dock accessory kit for prior generation iPod with Dock Connector, use M9130G/A iPod Dock kit."

A friend of mine at work just got the Cram and Jam deal Sunday night 10minutes before the store closed (she was completely sold once she saw how incredibly easy it was to capture images and manipulate them from her digital video recorder-- something XP wasn't doing at all...)

Today she got on the phone with the store and will be replacing her 400$ 20gig3gen with a 400$40gig4gen tommorow when they have them in stock!!

The CRAM and JAM just got a 100$ extra off, for the most up to date iPods!!!!!

Apple doesn't 'owe' you anything. You got what you ordered. I ordered refurb 3g 10gb a week ago and just got it, and I'm fine with it. You'll go broke trying to stay on the cutting edge.

Well that's awesome, but what i'm asking here is since I already have the iPod, like right here in my hand, would they let me return this one? I don't know the policy. I think they'd be reasonable if I just called and told them what's up. I haven't tried to get the rebate yet. So I mean.

I guess I'll just call tomorrow and ask them what I should do.

Their standard policy is 14 days with a 10% restocking fee IIRC. I doubt they would just swap your [now] used iPod for a new 4g. Most (all?) of the folks getting upgrades had unfulfilled orders, ie, did not have iPod in hand & had not yet shipped.

Pictures...

I just wish there were some pictures already, I wanna see some packaging...even if it's exactly like the old stuff.

I'd also like Apple to fix their page not to say "Instant gratification available at an Apple retail store or an iPod reseller near you." even though both have little or no idea when exactly they're getting them.

They might, my friend opened hers and they said she could pay the restocking fee and they'd trade it out!!

I should have clarified: I doubt they will give a free upgrade. I wouldn't see why they wouldn't exchange if you pay the restocking fee, since they would have owed you $299 for your returned 15gb (for example), you dig in your pocket for the 10%, and use the refunded $299 for a new 4g 20gb. Just cut out all the money changing hands and pay 10% to swap for a new 4g.

They'd be out a lot of money if they had to hand out 4g iPods to everyone who bought 3g's in the past week. It's the chance you take when you buy technology!

So, is the 200 dollar rebate when buying an apple laptop still in? 'cause DAMMMN I wish I didn't have a powerbook if I could do that, the new price drop and features, and the edu price!

In other news, yay, yay, yay for the new ipod. But it kinda seems like it's been a while since the last update, but there are fewer or less cool new features with this version as opposed to the one before it compared to the usual differences between updates. I'm kinda dissapointed. Particularly for the no-brainers-c'mon already, and put in FM radio, and airtunes in the high end! it's not like it's that expensive, and everything wirless is everything hot in computers now, really the only part that's keeping off commodityness and actually useful. If only for the apple image of keeping with hot technologies, they ought to do the wireless thing, particularly as that is their area!

but, I understand the limits of space and money. But radio?!?!?!? it was hardly novel when my grandparents were young!

(edit: I understand that most radio sucks, and that it doesn't work as well with the itms pacakge and all.... but I live in seattle, with KEXP, so I choose to ignore these things)

Ok guys, let's do some math... I bought a 3G 20GB iPod last February.

THIRD generation iPods

20GB - $399 - iPod, dock, carrying case, remote
40GB - $499 - iPod, dock, carrying case, remote

FOURTH generation iPods

20GB - $299 - iPod
40GB - $399 - iPod, dock

In order to get the same features (except the clickwheel, the software, etc), one has to acquire the following products:

20GB iPod + dock + carrying case + remote
$299 + $39 + $39 + $39 = $416
40GB iPod + carrying case + remote
$399 + $39 + $39 = $477

And now, the final comparison:
20GB
$416 (4G) - $399 (3G) = $17
That's it, it will cost you seventeen bucks more... 😡
40GB
$477 (4G) - $499 (3G) = $-22
$22 cheaper, now that's a sweet deal... Apart from the fact you'll have to wait for the separate accessories to ship/be available at retail stores... And having all those boxes to tear open 🙄

So, my stupid, nonsense (but ethically correct) advice is: for crying out loud, BOYCOTT THE 20 GIGGER!!

Well, you are right with your comparison. I just bought the 20 gig and couldn't be happier - I don't need these accessoires and can get the 20 gig for $300 now. And this one has 12 hours capacity. That sounds great for me. If I could choose (and I can choose) between the old 15 gig for $300 and the new 20 gig for $300 I take the new one.

Ordered two 40GB models (shipping in 1-3 days)...my first Ipods 😀

and ordered two Airport Extremes (3-4 weeks) 🙁

I don't care about the lack of 'accessories' as I doubt I would use anything but a skin and would rather buy my own anyways...saving $100 each and getting improved battery life seems well worth the wait.

Are you always buying pairs ?

Just got off the phone with the Apple Store in the UK. After speaking to two people, one in sales and one actually on the store phone line they both say that the 40gig ipod comes with both the remote control and the carry case (and I have their names!)

Their website still says so too.

I notice that the UK ipod is a different part number to the US one, apart from power adapter I wonder if this is significant?

The most significant thing is that you're paying $100 more than people in the U.S., so Apple can throw in whatever iPod accessory they want. I lived in London for six months and can't believe how much you guys are getting ripped off on U.S. electronics (which are made in Hong Kong)
🙄

To give apple a little credit, it's partially the VAT's fault, but then again we have sales tax here in America as well...just not 19%!

iPods sold in the EU also have their maximum headphone volume limited in software :/

within the last half hour, Apple UK have changed their website... needless to say I'll be back on the phone soon.

Good luck. Apple Australia hasn't offered to include the accessories even for people who ordered straight off the bat when the store came back up (ie me lol).

Of course, unusually, the Australian store was actually correct in not listing them as included in the tech specs from the word go... why do we have to be right at the WRONG times...
